MSU-Iowa game on Sept. 30 flexed to prime-time NBC broadcast

Michigan State’s road trip to Iowa in a couple of weeks got a little bit harder on Monday

Michigan State’s road trip to Iowa in a couple of weeks grew a little bit harder on Monday.

Game times and broadcasting information for Week 5 action were released on Monday, and the Spartans’ road matchup against the Hawkeyes was moved to prime time. Kickoff for the Big Ten clash is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 30, and will be televised nationally on NBC.

The Michigan State-Iowa game had originally been penciled in as a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff and available only via streaming on Peacock. However, something must have changed for TV executives to push it into the prime-time slot.

Iowa is generally tough to beat at home, and it’ll only be tougher now for the Spartans in a nighttime environment.

The countdown to Sept. 1 has begun, Spartans fans.

The college football offseason is upon us and the 2023 season can’t come soon enough after a disappointing campaign for Michigan State. The Spartans entered the 2022 season with high expectations as a fringe preseason top 10 team, but finished 2022 with a 5-7 losing record.

It’s time to flush the 2022 season and look ahead to 2023. Here is the Michigan State football 2023 schedule with updated kickoff times that have been recently released:

MSU Football: Analyzing CBS Sports’ game-by-game predictions for 2023 season

See how Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports envisions the Spartans’ 2023 season playing out this fall.

It’s officially summer time and that means we are one step closer to the fall and 2023 college football season.

This is also the time of the year when we start to see game-by-game predictions begin to filter out from different media outlets — including CBS Sports. Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports put out his game-by-game predictions for every Big Ten team this week, and he has the Spartans reaching bowl eligibility in 2023. But how many games does Fornelli see the Spartans winning and who will they beat?

Below is a game-by-game breakdown of how Fornelli predicts the Spartans’ 2023 season will play out, with my own predictions and thoughts on each matchup:

MSU football to host 2013 Rose Bowl Reunion during Washington game this year

Michigan State football will honor one of its all-time best teams this upcoming season

Michigan State football will honor one of its all-time best teams this upcoming season.

The Spartans will hold a 2013 Rose Bowl Reunion event during the home game against Washington on Sept. 16. The reunion event was announced by the school on Friday.

It’s been 10 years since the Spartans returned to Pasadena, Calif. and knocked off Stanford in an all-time classic Rose Bowl matchup. The Spartans’ Rose Bowl victory clinched a 13-1 overall record on the year and a top five finish in the closing polls.

Details of the reunion event have yet to be announced so stay tuned for more information to come on this event.

College Football News ranks hardest schedules in Big Ten in 2023

Michigan State is considered to have one of the hardest schedules in the league, while rival Michigan has one of the easiest

Last season was rough for the Spartans and things won’t get any easier for Michigan State in 2023, according to College Football News.

The college football media service put together rankings of their hardest schedules in 2023, and to no surprise Michigan State was near the top of the list nationally. Somewhat surprising, though, was that the Spartans weren’t at the top of the list despite having matchups against potentially four preseason top 10 teams on their slate.

So where did the Spartans land in the rankings nationally and in comparison to their Big Ten peers? Click here to see the complete national rankings from College Football News and continue reading to see where each Big Ten team landed (ranking easiest to hardest) with my thoughts on their 2023 schedule as well:

It’s never too early to start predicting games, right?

That’s what we think at Spartans Wire — we released record predictions for each Big Ten team already earlier this year — and 247Sports is on the same page. Brad Crawford of 247Sports released game-by-game predictions for each Big Ten team last week and he had some interesting takes and similarities to our own predictions.

Michigan State’s annual tradition of opening the football season on a Friday night will continue in 2023.

The Spartans officially announced on Monday that their season opener against Central Michigan has been moved from Saturday, Sept. 2 to Friday, Sept. 1. The official kickoff time and TV details for this non-conference matchup have yet to be announced.

This will be the Spartans’ ninth home Friday night season-opening game over the last 13 years. Michigan State opened the 2022 season on a Friday night against Western Michigan.

Breaking down MSU football’s 2023 schedule into tiers from easiest to hardest games

Breaking down MSU football’s 2023 schedule into tiers from easiest to hardest games

For many, spring football is in the rearview mirror and it’s time for college football fans to begin looking ahead to the fall. That includes us fellow Spartans, with Michigan State completing its spring practice session this past weekend.

With Michigan State wrapping up spring ball, we can start to look ahead to the 2023 season and review the upcoming slate — which is considered one of the hardest in the country. Michigan State will face at least four preseason top 25 teams next year, including the likes of Ohio State, Penn State, Washington and rival Michigan. Add in a pair of tough road trips to Minnesota and Iowa, and we are looking at quite a daunting schedule in 2023.

So how does the Spartans’ schedule stack up in terms of their chances to win each game? I have taken a stab at placing each game into a toughness tier ranging from expected to win to toss-up to very unlikely we see a Spartans victory.

Check out where each opponent on the Spartans’ 2023 schedule falls below:

Looking ahead to the Michigan State football 2023 schedule

The 2022 football season is over for Michigan State so it’s time to look ahead to next year

The 2022 football season is over for Michigan State so it’s time to look ahead to next year.

The Spartans’ 2023 schedule was finalized in late October after the Big Ten revealed the conference matchups. This news combined with the previously known three non-conference games means we have a complete slate for the 2023 season.

This next season will reportedly be the final year of the Big Ten East and West Divisions before USC and UCLA join the conference in 2024. So Michigan State will once again play Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Indiana, Rutgers and Maryland as well as three crossover games against West Division foes.
