A new trio of predicted standouts.

Mountain West football’s media days are underway this morning in Las Vegas and the conference wasted little time in announcing the media’s choices for preseason players of the year.

San Jose State quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, Wyoming linebacker Easton Gibbs, and San Diego State punter/kicker Jack Browning were named as offensive, defensive, and special teams players of the year, respectively.

Cordeiro’s first year in San Jose was a big success as he led the Spartans to a Famous Idaho Potato Bowl bid by completing 60.1% of his 427 attempts for a Mountain West-high 3,251 yards and 23 touchdowns against six interceptions. He also made the most of his mobility, as well, adding 265 rushing yards and nine more touchdowns on the ground.

Gibbs, meanwhile, took a few steps toward becoming the next great Cowboys linebacker by tallying 121 total tackles, the second-most in the conference, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble.

Browning had a difficult task in replacing Matt Araiza, but he handled specialist duties with aplomb, finishing 20-of-25 on field goal tries as a kicker and leading the Mountain West with an average of 46.3 yards per punt, including a net of 42.3 and 28 kicks inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

A new environment means a new outlook.

Mountain West football media days began this morning at Circa Resort and Casino with the announcement of how the conference’s media projects the 2023 season will play out.

For the first time since 2012, conference play will take place without divisions, which means that Boise State and Air Force being predicted to play for the Mountain West championship in December is a groundbreaking forecast.

  1. Boise State (28 first-place votes) — 433 points
  2. Air Force (two first-place votes) — 364 points
  3. Fresno State (five first-place votes) — 351 points
  4. San Diego State (one first-place vote) — 338 points
  5. San Jose State — 293 points
  6. Wyoming — 281 points
  7. Colorado State — 201 points
  8. Utah State — 194 points
  9. UNLV (one first-place vote) — 177 points
  10. Hawaii — 102 points
  11. Nevada — 92 points
  12. New Mexico — 60 points

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Boise State is projected to come out on top for the tenth straight year, but Air Force’s road to that number-two spot may be a tough one since they’re separated from the fourth-place Aztecs by just 26 points.

Mountain West Football: MWwire’s 2023 Preseason Projected Order Of Finish

There also appears to be more of a difference in opinion than in years past, as well, with five different teams earning at least one first-place vote. The biggest surprise in that group is UNLV, predicted to finish ninth overall but with a new head coach in Barry Odom who comes into the job with expectations of a breakthrough.

Did they get it right?

After revealing their predictions for how the 2022 season will unfold yesterday, the Mountain West football media today announced its collective picks for the official preseason all-conference team.

The selections aren’t without minor bits of controversy, however: Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier wasn’t even on the ballot, while the Coloradoan’s Kevin Lytle noted that only one player was nominated for a particular position (while he did not specify who that was, it is likely tight end Tanner Arkin).

Five players make a repeat appearance on this 2022 squad after making the cut in 2021, as well. San Diego State leads the way with eight overall selections, while Fresno State is right behind with five and Boise State landed four. The four teams without representation on this year’s preseason all-conference team are Hawaii, UNLV, Utah State, and Wyoming.

Little controversy here.

After previously revealing their preseason predictions for Mountain West football’s division winners and all-conference team, the Mountain West media also announced its choices for the preseason players of the year.

[lawrence-related id=47015,47032,47055]

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener, San Jose State defensive end Cade Hall, and San Diego State return specialist Jordan Byrd were named as offensive, defensive, and special teams players of the year, respectively.

Haener helped spur a resurgence at Fresno State last year by completing 67.1% of his 490 pass attempts for 4,096 yards (second-most in the Mountain West and ninth among all FBS quarterbacks) and 33 touchdowns with an interception rate of 1.8%. According to Pro Football Focus, he put up a passing grade of 80.2, as well, the fourth-best figure in the conference.

Hall’s selection may be construed as something of a surprise, but it marks the second straight year that the media voters have tabbed the Spartans defender for this individual honor. Though he didn’t quite hit the same heights last year that he did in 2020, he was nonetheless a disruptive and productive player, finishing the season with 40 tackles, four sacks, six tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.

Byrd, meanwhile, finally gets his moment in the sun after playing like one of the conference’s most reliable specialists for the past few years. In his career, he’s averaged 25 yards per kick return but bettered that in 2021, going for 27.3 yards per return on 22 kicks and scoring a touchdown for the second year in a row.

Are the races that clear-cut?

The Mountain West football media days are underway today and, as usual, it kicked off with the announcement of how the conference’s media projects the 2022 season will unfold.

Fresno State and Boise State are expected reach the Mountain West championship as the winners of the West division and Mountain division, respectively, in what will be the last year of their existence before a new schedule rotation debuts in 2023. It marks the ninth straight year that the Broncos are predicted to come out on top, while the Bulldogs are projected for a first-place finish for the first time since 2019.

West Division

  1. Fresno State (20 first-place votes) — 160 points
  2. San Diego State (eight first-place votes) — 148 points
  3. San Jose State — 105 points
  4. Nevada — 66 points
  5. UNLV — 58 points
  6. Hawaii — 51 points

Mountain Division

  1. Boise State (14 first-place votes) — 252points
  2. Air Force (10 first-place votes) — 136 points
  3. Utah State (three first-place votes) — 122 points
  4. Colorado State (one first-place vote) — 90 points
  5. Wyoming — 60 points
  6. New Mexico — 29 points

Interestingly, there are a couple differences between how the conference media foresees the season and our own staff’s predictions: The UNLV Rebels, for instance, are not projected to finish last in the West this season and the difference between those at the top of each division are much closer than we’d forecast them to be.
