C Ted Karras, TE Ryan Izzo out for Patriots vs. Chiefs in Week 14

No surprises on Sunday for New England.

The New England Patriots will be without starting center Ted Karras (knee) on Sunday. He was ruled out on Friday after missing every practice in preparation for the team’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Week 14.

Here’s a look at the team’s inactives this week.

C Ted Karras (knee)
DT Byron Cowart (head)
T Korey Cunningham
RB Damien Harris
CB Joejuan Williams
QB Cody Kessler
TE Ryan Izzo

Aside from his injury, the Patriots are looking relatively healthy this week, with receivers Julian Edelman (shoulder) and Mohamed Sanu (ankle) playing despite limitations during the week. Linebackers Ja’Whaun Bentley (knee) and John Simon (elbow), tackle Marcus Cannon (illness), safety Patrick Chung (heel) and cornerback Jason McCourty (groin) will also play despite being listed as questionable.

McCourty is making his return after missing in Week 13.

What Bill Belichick wouldn’t say in Week 14 in preparation for Chiefs

Answering the tough questions Bill Belichick wouldn’t answer.

Bill Belichick didn’t mind discussing Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and the Kansas City Chiefs’ explosive offense. Though he failed to address the fact that they’re not that explosive in recent weeks.

The New England Patriots coach is preparing for an AFC Championship Game rematch with Kansas City. And as usual, he was ready to praise his opponent. He also discussed the strong work from his receivers Julian Edelman and Mohamed Sanu.

But just like every week, there were topics Belichick avoided as best he could. He dodged topics like the Patriots’ decision to go without a kicker this week. And he didn’t field a question about the Tom Brady drama or the Antonio Brown apology.

Here’s what Bill Belichick wouldn’t say in Week 14.

1. What’s going on with your kicker situation? Can you announce that you’re re-signing Nick Folk?

What he said Friday: “Nope.”

What we think he’s thinking: The Patriots have clearly expected all week that Nick Folk would be returning to the team. He was dealing with appendicitis and missed last week’s game. Perhaps the timeline for his return hit a snag, because they won’t be adding Folk on Saturday. But they will add Folk despite spending the week without a kicker, according to NFL Network. It would have been a truly Belichickian oddity for the Patriots head into one of the biggest matchups of the season without a kicker. He probably would’ve enjoyed the challenge.

Mohamed Sanu might be a source of hope for Patriots offense

Mohamed Sanu has been limited with an ankle injury, but could make a comeback.

The New England Patriots have stayed positive about the state of the offense. But there’s no escaping the obvious: Over the last four weeks, they’ve regressed while averaging 18 points per game.

It’s becoming clear that they need production in the passing game beyond receiver Julian Edelman and running back James White. Tom Brady has needed help. And there’s one skill player who seems to have fallen out of the public eye: receiver Mohamed Sanu. New England traded a second-round pick for him before the deadline this year, and he quickly looked comfortable in New England’s offense in the Week 9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens when he had 10 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.

An ankle injury set him back in recent weeks. He was inactive in Week 12 and was clearly on a limited snap count for Week 13. But perhaps New England can expect more from him as he gets healthier and learns more of the Patriots offense.

“It’s more every week, so each week there’s building blocks, and you can add some things or repeat things from previous weeks to improve the execution on them and communication,” Bill Belichick said of Sanu on Friday morning during a press conference at Gillette Stadium. “We’ve made a lot of progress. Definitely headed in the right direction. We’re definitely not there yet either, but we’re gaining ground.”

Sanu’s teammates, particularly the ones who have known him from his days at Rutgers, have touted his athleticism. He was a safety to start his college career, and cornerback Jason McCourty suggested Sanu might have gone in the first round of the NFL draft, had he stayed at the position. But Sanu switched to receiver, and went in the third round of the 2012 draft. His elite athleticism has always made him a compelling slot option, whether with the Cincinnati Bengals, the Atlanta Falcons or the Patriots. But his smarts have been noteworthy as he takes a bigger role in New England.

“He’s been in a couple different systems from what we run, so there’s some carryover, there’s a lot of new things, too,” Belichick said. “He’s a smart kid. He’s experienced. He’s played a lot of football, so a lot of the concepts he’s dealt with before. Terminology and nomenclature. The way it’s presented might be a little bit different.”

There’s a sense of doom and gloom in New England after it suffered a tough loss to the Houston Texans last week. There’s no denying the offense looked unimpressive. But Brady, Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have made a habit of turning a disaster zone into a disaster for zone (and man) defenses. If the Patriots are going to put together a turnaround — which is something they seem to do every year — then Sanu could be central in that resurgence.

How Patriots’ pass-catchers are handling the intense scrutiny

The narrative around Tom Brady and the New England Patriots offense has changed rapidly. Here’s how the WRs and TEs are responding.

Before the Baltimore Ravens beat up the New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 9, Tom Brady was leading the top-scoring offense in the NFL. There was some skepticism surrounding the unit. They had an easy schedule, and New England was handing it to their bad opponents.

But the narrative around New England shifted in that Week 9 loss.

The Patriots’ schedule has gotten challenging over the last few weeks, and in turn, their offense is skidding. For the first three quarters against the Houston Texans, the Patriots struggled mightily to move the ball, which was a continuation of the issues against the Eagles, the Cowboys and the Ravens. As the loss to the Texans wound down, Brady and New England began to put up points and yardage, but that was largely because of Houston’s relaxed (and perhaps way-too-casual) approach on defense.

Even with all their weaknesses, the Patriots (10-2) are still Super Bowl contenders. But their talent at pass-catcher seems to be lacking. At least, that has been the narrative over these last few weeks.

“We’re used to it, so it doesn’t really matter,” receiver Phillip Dorsett told Patriots Wire on Wednesday. “(It’s) business as usual. We understand. We get it. We’re used to it.”

Dorsett is no stranger to harsh criticism directed at the receiver group. Last season after four weeks, New England was thought to be in a dire situation at 2-2 with one of the least productive receiving groups in the NFL. But Julian Edelman returned from suspension and Rob Gronkowski began to play better. You may have heard: The Patriots went on to win a Super Bowl.

This year, Gronk isn’t coming back. And Edelman has been with them for the entire year, even if he is playing through injuries. New England isn’t likely to get a boost. If the Patriots offense is going to improve, the group will do so with what they have: Edelman, Dorsett, James White, Mohamed Sanu, Jakobi Meyers, N’Keal Harry and others.

“One thing my mom told me when I was a little kid: Things are never going as good as you think they are and they’re never as bad as you think they are,” Meyers said at his locker on Wednesday. “So as long as we just keep that mindset, we’ll be alright. … Losing doesn’t really sit too well around here. That’s what I learned pretty early. They tell you, losing is just not tolerated. So I just try to pick it back up and keep momentum going.”

Meyers took comfort in constructive criticism this week. The coaches broke down the Patriots loss into the fine details: a botched route assignment, poor technique on the break, bad use of leverage. Those little adjustments could be the difference between and win and a loss.

“The one thing we’re not satisfied about but not happy about is that it’s on us,” he said. “Things we’ve been doing have been results from our bad technique or fundamentals or things that can be fixed. … We control it. It’s our job to fix it. I think we’ve got a room full of motivated guys and we’re going to fix it.”

Meyers is among the Patriots with upside. New England knows what it has in Edelman and White — they’re excellent and reliable players. But when Houston doubled Edelman and put a cornerback on White, the Texans forced the Patriots to use their other skill players. And those players weren’t quite productive enough for a win. If the Patriots offense is going to turn a corner, they will see improved performances from Meyers, Harry and others like tight end Matt LaCosse. They’ve done very little so far, but could be bigger parts of the game plan going forward.

“We’ve got a lot of games left to plays and we’ll see how we do down the stretch,” LaCosse said. “It’s good to be out there. It’s good to be able to do multiple things for this offense. Whatever they ask me to do, that’s what I’m going to do.”

The Patriots are blocking out the noise, as usual. They’re trying to get better every day, as usual. And they’re unfazed by the criticism, as usual. It is unusual, however, for their offense to struggle so significantly at this time of year. Will they turn things around by the playoffs, as usual?

Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu limited in Patriots practice in Week 14

The receiving corps seem to be getting healthier.

The New England Patriots are getting healthier after a brutal Week 13. The team fought an illness that contributed to leaving 18 players on the final injury report last week. In Week 14, the list got shorter.

New England had two players who didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice: defensive tackle Byron Cowart (head) and center Ted Karras (knee). Quarterback Tom Brady was listed on the injury report with toe and right elbow issues, but he was a full participant.

Six players were listed as limited. They are as follows…

LIMITED PARTICIPATION
LB Ja’Whaun Bentley, Knee
OT Marcus Cannon, Illness
S Patrick Chung, Heel
WR Julian Edelman, Shoulder
CB Jason McCourty, Groin
WR Mohamed Sanu, Ankle

Receiver Phillip Dorsett is no longer dealing with limitations from a concussion. However, Edelman and Sanu are still limited with their injuries. Sanu, in particular, seemed to take a decreased role on Sunday as he only got 19 snaps, surely a product of his ankle issue.

Mohamed Sanu, Phillip Dorsett among active players for Patriots-Texans

Only two players will miss the Patriots game on Sunday night due to illness.

Despite having 17 players questionable for Sunday night with an illness, the New England Patriots will head into their matchup with the Houston Texans considerably healthy.

The Patriots also will bring back receivers Mohamed Sanu and Phillip Dorsett, who missed Week 12 with injuries. The most significant players to miss the game include Jason McCourty and Ryan Izzo. J.C. Jackson will start again at cornerback and rookie Joejuan Williams will likely see more time on the defensive side. Ben Watson and Matt LaCosse will the team’s tight ends for the night.

Mohamed Sanu, Phillip Dorsett, Jason McCourty inactive for Week 12 vs. Cowboys

A rough situation at WR.

The New England Patriots will be without two of their top wideouts for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12.

Receivers Mohamed Sanu (ankle) and Phillip Dorsett (concussion) will not play. The Patriots will instead look to their rookie receivers in N’Keal Harry, a 2019 first-round pick who missed the first half of the season with an ankle injury, and Jakobi Meyers, who went undrafted. Both players seem to be coming along slowly.

Tackle Isaiah Wynn will make his return from injury, which is likely to bump Marshall Newhouse out of the left tackle spot. Wynn, who the Patriots drafted in the first round in 2018, hasn’t played since Week 2                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   when he departed from the game with a toe injury, which landed him on injured reserve for eight games. Safety Patrick Chung is also making his return after missing Week 11.

The rest of the Patriots’ inactives are as follows: offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, running back Damien Harris, quarterback Cody Kessler, cornerback Jason McCourty and tight end Ryan Izzo. McCourty is another surprise — he cropped up on the injury report with a groin injury on Friday when he was limited in practice.

Here’s a look at the Cowboys’ inactives, which include star linebacker Leighton Vander Esch.

Marcus Cannon not present for start of practice in Week 12

Another question mark at tackle?

New England Patriots tackle Marcus Cannon was not present for the media portion of practice on Friday during Week 12 in the team’s final practice in preparation for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Cannon had not been listed on the injury report earlier this week.

Receivers Mohamed Sanu (ankle) and Phillip Dorsett (concussion) were present for practice. But it’s unclear at what level they were participating. Sanu, for example, was present at practice on Wednesday but didn’t participate. He also missed Thursday’s practice. Dorsett, meanwhile, was upgraded to limited on Thursday after missing practice on Wednesday.

Tackle Isaiah Wynn was present for practice. He has not been on the injury report this week, which bodes well for a potential return to the field on Sunday. He could take over for tackle Marshall Newhouse.

Phillip Dorsett returns to Patriots practice in Week 12

A good sign for the WRs.

New England Patriots receivers Mohamed Sanu and Phillip Dorsett were present for the media portion of practice on Thursday during Week 12 ahead of the team’s game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Dorsett (concussion) was a limited participant while Sanu (ankle) didn’t participate, the team announced Thursday.

Sanu and Dorsett missed practice on Wednesday. While Sanu might miss a few weeks, according to NBC Sports Boston, there’s some optimism that Dorsett could return for Week 12, according to The Athletic. Sanu and Dorsett are behind just Julian Edelman on the depth chart. Their absences on Sunday would be significant, and would thrust rookie receivers N’Keal Harry and Jakobi Meyers into significantly increased roles.

Report: Mohamed Sanu could miss multiple weeks

His ankle injury may be more severe than it appeared in Week 11.

[jwplayer LfXP39Xe-ThvAeFxT]

New England Patriots wide receiver Mohamed Sanu finished the Patriots’ Week 11 game despite suffering an ankle injury, but he did not participate in practice on Wednesday and may miss time.

NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran reputed that Sanu may need an extended absence. Here’s what Curran said:

Last week, after he had the punt return where it appeared he might have twisted up his leg, probably led to what I’m hearing might be a high ankle sprain that could keep him on the sidelines for a couple of weeks unless it has drastic improvement.

Sanu suffered his injury while returning a punt in the second half of the Patriots’ 17-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. His punt-returning role has been new with starting punt returner Gunner Olszewski dealing with a rash of injuries. Olszewski landed on injured reserve this week when the Patriots activated offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn.

Considering the Patriots’ recent struggles on offense, Sanu’s injury is a rough development. He joined the team in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons at the deadline this season.
