15 free agents the Ravens can sign that don’t count against compensatory picks

We’re looking at 15 free agents the Baltimore Ravens can sign that don’t count against compensatory picks for 2025

The NFL’s new league is less than a week away. With the legal tampering period scheduled to start on Monday, Baltimore will look to retool on defense while making cost-effective decisions.

All-Pro pass defensive tackle Justin Madubuike is the biggest concern this offseason after getting the franchise tag, but the Ravens must also navigate 26 looming free agents.

GM Eric DeCosta has clarified that he’s prepared to lose several key starters and retool via the draft with a handful of 2025 compensatory picks.

The formula is simple.

If you lose more unrestricted free agents than you sign, you are eligible for that many compensatory selections. What round they come is determined by how big their contract is.

DeCosta and other general managers can take advantage of the rule by signing players released before their contract expires. Those players don’t count toward the formula.

According to Over The Cap, plenty of players who can help the team and not detract from the formula will be available.

Here are 15 players Baltimore could sign that wouldn’t count against 2025 compensatory picks.

Lions bring RB Jermar Jefferson back

Jefferson is back on the practice squad after being waived/injured in training camp

A familiar name is back in Detroit after being off the team for a bit. Running back Jermar Jefferson has returned to the Lions, signing on the team’s practice squad.

Jefferson was a 7th-round pick in 2021 by Detroit. He played sparingly as a rookie, gaining 74 yards on 15 carries and scoring twice. Jefferson spent 2022 on Detroit’s practice squad.

He was waived with injured status this August. Ironically, he’s back in Detroit due to an injury for another practice squad running back, Mo Ibrahim.

The Lions made room for Jefferson by placing Ibrahim on the practice squad I.R. the undrafted rookie from Minnesota dislocated his hip on his first-ever NFL touch in Detroit’s loss to the Ravens.

Injured Lions RB Mo Ibrahim stays in Baltimore for surgery

Lions rookie RB Mohamed Ibrahim stayed in Baltimore for emergency surgery on a scary hip injury suffered in Week 7

Lions running back Mohamed Ibrahim got his first NFL action on Sunday. His time was ended abruptly with a scary injury.

Ibrahim, a rookie from Minnesota signed to the practice squad last week, left the game after his very first NFL touch. Upon being tackled on his kickoff return, Ibrahim suffered a dislocated hip.

Players from both teams immediately signaled for medical attention for Ibrahim. He was carted off the field after being immobilized and stabilized by trainers.

After the game, head coach Dan Campbell indicated Ibrahim will not travel home with the team. He needed emergency surgery on the injured hip.

“He’s going to stay here overnight,” Campbell told reporters. “He’s tough. I hate that for him, but that certainly puts a strain on our team.”

Campbell added that they expect Ibrahim to be okay, but that’s for general purposes and not football-related.

Ibrahim went undrafted in part because of a lengthy injury history in college that included a torn Achilles and multiple ankle injuries. Here’s hoping Ibrahim will be okay and home soon.

Lions activate Josh Paschal in latest set of roster moves

Lions activate Josh Paschal in latest set of roster moves ahead of Week 7, which also includes promoting 2 RBs from the practice squad

Josh Paschal is back on the active roster. True to head coach Dan Campbell’s words on Friday, the Lions activated the second-year defensive lineman on Saturday ahead of the Week 7 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

Paschal has been on injured reserve since the Week 1 win over the Chiefs. He suffered a knee injury that did not need surgery. The Lions started Paschal’s window to return on October 13th and activated him in time to play in Baltimore.

To make room for Paschal, the Lions released veteran tight end Darrell Daniels. That should be seen as a good sign that James Mitchell is healthy enough to play after missing time with a hamstring injury.

Detroit also promoted two running backs from the practice squad to the active roster for Week 7. Devine Ozigbo joins the gameday roster for the second week in a row. He’ll be joined by Mohamed Ibrahim, who was signed to the practice squad this week.

The Lions are bringing back RB Mohamed Ibrahim

The Lions are bringing back RB Mohamed Ibrahim to the practice squad

A familiar face from the preseason is returning to help bolster the Detroit Lions’ shaky depth at running back. Per his agent, the Lions are signing free agent RB Mohamed Ibrahim to the practice squad.

Ibrahim spent the summer with the Lions as an undrafted rookie free agent from Minnesota. He saw steady work throughout training camp and got some preseason action, carrying the ball four times for nine yards. Ibrahim was waived with injury designation during the preseason.

His familiarity with the Lions offense is an asset. Detroit was down to just two healthy RBs, Craig Reynolds and practice squad member Devine Ozigbo, after Sunday’s win in Tampa Bay.

Mohamed Ibrahim goes unclaimed on waivers, now on the Lions I.R.

Ibrahim had some early momentum but will now miss the 2023 season

Running back Mohamed Ibrahim is back on the Detroit Lions roster, though not in the way the undrafted rookie from Minnesota would have liked. Ibrahim cleared waivers, going unclaimed by any of the other 31 NFL teams after being waived with injury status by Detroit over the weekend.

Because he was waived with injury status, Ibrahim now reverts to the Lions injured reserve. If he stays on I.R., his 2023 season is over.

Ibrahim could take an injury settlement and leave the Lions to sign with another team after the terms of the injury settlement — which vary case-by-case — are expired. Ibrahim could even return to the Lions three weeks after the end of the injury settlement period, and only on the team’s active 53-man roster. That is an exceedingly unusual circumstance, though it has happened before.

Ibrahim started out strong in minicamp, but his reps and role faded progressively over the course of training camp even before the injury. He’s battled several serious injuries over the course of his college career, including a torn Achilles and an unrelated ankle issue that cost him several games for the Golden Gophers.

Lions sign S Scott Nelson, waive injured RB Mohamed Ibrahim

Lions sign safety Scott Nelson and waive injured RB Mohamed Ibrahim

Days after preseason contests are always busy with transactions, and Sunday is no exception. A day after losing the second exhibition game to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Detroit Lions signed safety Scott Nelson to the active roster.

Nelson is in his second NFL season, spending 2022 primarily on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, He originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Nelson played collegiately at Wisconsin. He’s a Detroit native and a graduate of Jesuit High School.

To make room for Nelson, the Lions waived running back Mohamed Ibrahim with an injury designation. Ibrahim, an undrafted rookie from Minnesota, has been sidelined with an injury and lost the early momentum to make the roster he established in minicamp.

Breaking down the battle for the Lions RB depth

Breaking down the battle for the Detroit Lions reserve RB spots behind David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs

David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs are both new to Detroit this season, but they already look like an excellent running back tandem. The Lions duo should be one of the NFL’s best and most versatile.

After the top two RBs, well…

The picture behind Montgomery and Gibbs has blurred in the last couple of weeks. Injuries to Craig Reynolds and Jermar Jefferson and the unexpected retirement of Justin Jackson have really opened up the competition. Or, as head coach Dan Campbell said before Monday’s practice session,

“…nothing is solidified in that third role or fourth for that matter. I mean there’s – we’re going to take the best players and so, our eyes are open. We – (Lions GM)) Brad (Holmes) and I were discussing it, I mean we’re – you want a job, go get it.”

Campbell made sure to emphasize that the competition doesn’t have nearly as much to do with running the ball as it does special teams.

“We’re looking for a third back and it all starts with special teams, man. If they can help us there, then we’re figure out the offensive side of it,” Campbell stated.

Here are the guys trying to go get those jobs and where they stand entering the second week of preseason.

Stud and Duds for the Lions’ preseason win against the Giants

Here is the breakdown of Detroit Lions Studs and Duds for their preseason victory over the New York Giants

The Detroit Lions kicked off their football season with a 21-16 preseason win over the New York Giants.

Despite the Giants’ favorable starting field position, it was evident early on that the Lions defense had made significant progress during the offseason. They displayed impressive run defense, quarterback pressure and tight coverage. It’s still early in the season to make any judgments, but it’s reassuring to see the team’s improvement paying off.

As you reflect on the game, keep an eye out for standout players vying for roster spots, as well as those who fell short and may not make the cut. The following are the Lions’ Studs and Duds for this week.
