Belmont Stakes Day betting was way down compared to last year’s record number

Belmont Stakes Day generated a handle of more than $98 million.

Mo Donegal’s win Saturday in 154th running of the Belmont Stakes was the highlight of a day that generated an all-sources handle of $98,766,906 across 13 races, the New York Racing Association reports. That number represents a drop-off of more than 12% from last year’s handle of $112,725,278, which was an NYRA record for a non-Triple Crown year.

Notably, 2022 was also a non-Triple Crown year after the owner of long-shot Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike opted out of the Preakness Stakes, and Preakness winner Early Voting didn’t run the Derby or Belmont. Epicenter, the Derby and Preakness favorite who finished second in both, also didn’t run at Belmont.

Could all of that have played a part in why interest in Belmont Stakes Day betting was way down despite a paid attendance of more than four-times the capacity-restricted event of 2021? Maybe. But I wouldn’t overlook inflation either, as soaring prices have people protecting their money a little more.

The all-sources handle for the main race, carded as Race 11, was $50,248,624 – down from $60,459,330 a year ago. Over the course of the entire three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, which featured 33 races, more than $127 million in handle was generated from all sources. That number is down from about $142 million in 2021.

2022 Belmont Stakes: Here’s how much you would’ve made with a $1 superfecta

Someone, somewhere just won enough to buy a PS5 at a minimum.

The final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, was absolutely thrilling as Mo Donegal won the 154th edition of the famous horse race in Elmont, New York.

Mo Donegal entered the starting gate with 5/2 odds to win and appropriately came away victorious.

Any bettor who took the initiative to place a bet on Mo Donegal has to be feeling good, but what if you were brilliant (crazy?) enough to correctly place a $1 superfecta bet?

To win a superfecta, a bettor must correctly predict not just the winner of the Belmont Stakes but also the second, third, and fourth-place finishers in the exact order. This year, that was Nest (5-1), Skippylongstocking (11-1), and We The People (4-1), respectively.

Getting all of those right, which would have been a truly unbelievable feat, would have netted a … modest payout, all things considered. With just a $1 bet, you would win $692.00. Uh, alright. I mean, that’s a PS5 (if you can track one down) or a new big-screen TV, right?

With Mo Donegal’s high odds to win, it seems fair to assume that there were more people than usual who won this superfecta bet. But at the same time, if someone did make that bet, they likely put more than $1 up.

All in all, someone, somewhere, still won a hefty sum of cash from the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

2022 Belmont Stakes: Mo Donegal wins Belmont Stakes in Kentucky Derby rematch with Rich Strike

Mo Donegal aced the test of champions.

The test of the champions has produced another worthy victor as Mo Donegal earned a first place finish at the 2022 Belmont Stakes on Saturday in Elmont, New York.

It’s the fourth Belmont Stakes victory for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Mo Donegal got off to a middling start, hanging in the middle of the pack while We The People raced out to the lead after starting on the rail. Despite sitting in sixth place on the backstretch, Mo Donegal was able to muscle around the top of the field and gather strength down the stretch to cross the finish line in just 2:28.28.

The 1.5 mile dirt race saw just an eight horse field, but it happened to be packed with established names like Skippylongstocking, Barber Road and 2022 Kentucky Derby-winner Rich Strike.

This was Rich Strike’s first race since his historic Run for the Roses when he was added as a late entry to the field, then blazed away with the win despite 80-1 odds—the second longest ever to win the Derby.

On Saturday, Rich Strike struggled to keep up with the pace and couldn’t make a late move running in eighth almost the entire race.

Mo Donegal, who finished fifth behind Rich Strike at the Kentucky Derby will take home $800,000 of the $1.5 million purse after closing with 5-2 odds.
