Magic give their respects to Sixers star Joel Embiid after huge performance

The Orlando Magic gave their respect to Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid for his big performance.

The Orlando Magic were almost helpless on Wednesday night. The young, scrappy team had built up a 10-point lead at the half behind a big night from Mo Bamba, but Joel Embiid went on a rampage all night and he lifted the Philadelphia 76ers to a 123-110 win at home.

Embiid was phenomenal all night as he dropped 50 points on 17-for-23 shooting and he also shot 15-for-17 from the free-throw line as he attacked everybody on the Magic. It was just one of those nights where a team has to tip their cap, shake your hand, and move on.

“That was a heck of a performance by him,” said acting Magic head coach Jesse Murmeys. “He’s been playing at an MVP level. We had a double team on for most of the game except for some minutes when Robin (Lopez) was on him, but the way he was playing there was really nowhere to get him because it wasn’t really on the block. He was shooting fadeaways and stepbacks, I mean he was impressive and it was a heck of a performance by him.”

Embiid did this against a terrific defender in the form of Bamba. The young Magic big man is a heck of a shot-blocker as he is able to use his length to bother a lot of opposing big men. That didn’t matter against Embiid as the Philadelphia superstar used his smarts to be able to make it look easy.

“It’s tough,” said Bamba. “His just general presence out there offensively. He’s bringing the ball up the court, he’s shooting 3s, he’s obviously posting up, and making a lot of physical plays. He’s a tough cover, but I think if we did a little bit better job of sticking to the game plan, I think we would’ve had a little more success there.”

Embiid had 20 points in the opening quarter and then he added 23 points in the third quarter. Just for reference, the Magic as a team had 23 points in the third quarter. It was just an impressive all-around performance for Embiid as he continues to earn the respect of everybody in this league.

“You’ve gotta tip your hat in this league,” Murmeys added. “There’s great players, they make great performances, and we will watch the tape and learn from it and see where we could’ve done a better job trying to just make it more difficult on him.”

Sixers discuss career night from Mo Bamba in home win over Magic

The Philadelphia 76ers react to a career night from Mo Bamba in their win over the Orlando Magic at home.

The Philadelphia 76ers were able to come away with a 123-110 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday at home thanks to a huge night from Joel Embiid out on the floor. The big fella put up 50 points on 17-for-23 shooting and he had 20 points in the first quarter and then had 23 in the third.

All of that was great, but on the other side, Magic big man Mo Bamba had a big night of his own.

Bamba set a career-high in the first half alone when he had 28 points at the break and he was 7-for-8 from deep. He didn’t look like Mo Bamba at that point, he looked more like Stephen Curry, and he led the Magic to a 57-47 halftime lead.

“He obviously made a bunch of jumpers and they went on that run when I went to the bench so we needed to kinda change our approach defensively,” said Embiid. “I was more aggressive on the pick-and-roll whether it was trapping or hedging and trying to recover to him.”

In the second half, Bamba only took two shots, making both of them, and he had four points after halftime before fouling out.

“I told him after the game he was not going to do anything in the second half,” Embiid added. “Not on my watch. He was great. That’s what he does. He’s amazing defensively and then offensively, a pick-and-pop big. He still has a lot of potential, but he’s great.”

Bamba was not able to get the same types of looks in the second half as coach Doc Rivers was on his team about it in the halftime locker room.

“We just got out to him,” said Rivers. “We had a bunch of missed coverages. He is shooting 33% from the 3 before the game and he caught fire, but he’s capable of making 3s. We had some bad veers, you know, veer means switch, and we didn’t do that much different. We trapped a couple of times which guaranteed that we were gonna have a rotator.”

Either way, the Sixers were able to get the job done on Bamba and pick up an important win at home. In the dog days of the NBA season, it’s nights like these that can be very satisfying in order to help the team move forward.

6 future restricted free agents who could be dealt at the NBA trade deadline, from Nic Claxton to Bol Bol

Here are six of the players to keep an eye on as we inch closer to the trade deadline.

The NBA trade deadline — February 10 at 3PM Eastern — is hard to predict and players may unexpectedly find themselves on the move. But there are some trends we’ve learned.

For example, NBA teams often make a decision about a player’s free agency before the free agency period actually begins. If an organization decides that they are going to move on from a player, it makes sense to see if they can get any assets in return.

That is one of the reasons why the Knicks recently moved on from Kevin Knox, who was recently traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a deal to land Cam Reddish.

Of course, some teams may be reluctant to trade for an upcoming free agent like Knox. But it’s occasionally advantageous because if they are able to bring a player into the fold before he actually hits the open market, they get the first opportunity to establish chemistry between the two parties. If it doesn’t work out, meanwhile, it’s a way of clearing up cap space on their salary books.

As such, when surveying the league to find the players most likely to see their name in trade rumors, upcoming restricted free agents are a good place to begin.

Here are six of the players to keep an eye on as we inch closer to the trade deadline:

Magic big man Mo Bamba has high praise for Sixers star Joel Embiid

Young Orlando Magic big man Mo Bamba has praise for Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is one of the most feared players in the league. He is a guy who can go off for a big game at any moment and he is one of the best players in the NBA regardless of position.

In Monday’s home win over the Orlando Magic, though not an inspiring performance by Embiid nor the Sixers, the big fella struggled a bit. Embiid finished with 16 points on 4-for-16 shooting with 13 rebounds and five assists in the win. He also shot 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Despite not shooting the ball well, he was still a factor in the win. Young Magic big man, Mo Bamba had himself an impressive game with six blocks and he was solid against Embiid despite what the superstar brings to the table. Bamba’s efforts helped the Magic keep things close.

“It’s important, but moral victories don’t show up in the win column,” said Bamba. “We knew that Philly was gonna be a tough team. Playing one of the best players in the world in Joel Embiid. We knew it was gonna be tough.”

With the game on the line when Orlando kept things close, Embiid came up big by heading to the free-throw line six times, knocking down four, to help the Sixers come away with a win. The young Magic big men, Bamba and Wendell Carter Jr., had a tough time defending him with the game on the line.

At the end of the day, the Magic are hoping their defensive efforts against Embiid can pay off for them in the future.

“We’re just showing that we’re capable of just going out there and being great defenders,” Bamba added. “He (Carter Jr.) did a great job tonight defending Jo. The stats speak for itself. He shot 4-for-16 and we’re just looking to build off of this.”

Players who didn’t extend and are headed to restricted free agency

Here’s a look at those players that will be headed to restricted free agency in 2022 after the rookie-scale extension deadline passed.

The rookie-scale extension deadline has passed with a flurry of extensions for the 2018 draft class. Eleven players were extended, including four players signing maximum extensions. These extensions combine for a total of $1.146 billion in guaranteed money.

Twelve players on rookie-scale contracts that were extension-eligible did not extend and it will be interesting to see how the 2022 free agent market shakes out for them. There are now only 4 teams that can generate significant cap space next offseason, which explains why so many players extended now. Here’s a look at those players that will be headed to restricted free agency in 2022.

Mo Bamba pulled up to play the Rockets wearing a Cole Anthony shirt

Magic center Mo Bamba hilariously arrived at the arena donning a shirt honoring rookie teammate, and friend, Cole Anthony.

Prior to facing the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic center Mo Bamba hilariously arrived at the Toyota Center on Friday donning a shirt honoring rookie teammate, and friend, Cole Anthony.

Bamba and Anthony were AAU teammates on PSA Cardinals in New York during the summer of 2016 and have stayed close since then. Of course, the two are now teammates once again and have enjoyed their time together so far with the Magic — at least, we think so.

When Anthony was drafted by the Magic, Bamba told him he would pick him up from the airport in Orlando but, as Anthony later said, that never happened. Now, at least, Bamba is showing Anthony some love, this time in t-shirt form.

Anthony approved of the shirt Bamba picked out.

The two were in constant communication in the days leading up to the draft. Bamba would joke with Anthony that the Magic would take him and it finally became real once Anthony was still on the board when Orlando was on the clock.

Anthony now has been thrust into the starting lineup with Markelle Fultz out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL. The game versus the Rockets will be his first career start so, perhaps, the shirt by Bamba will bring some good luck to Anthony and the Magic.

Mo Bamba jokingly wants it to be known he doesn’t like Cole Anthony

Bamba took a friendly shot at his new teammate on Saturday as he addressed the media following practice.

Mo Bamba wants to set the record straight: He doesn’t like Cole Anthony.

Of course, the Orlando Magic center was only kidding on Saturday as he addressed the media ahead of the start of the regular season. Bamba and Anthony were AAU teammates on PSA Cardinals in New York during the summer of 2016 and have stayed close since then.

Now, the two are teammates once again, but this time in Orlando.

Bamba and Anthony were in constant contact in the days and months leading up to the NBA draft. Bamba would often joke with Anthony that Orlando would draft him but it didn’t become serious until the Magic were on the clock and actually took Anthony with the 15th overall pick.

“I want it on the record that I do not like the kid at all. I want that to be a direct quote,” Bamba said. “In all seriousness, Cole has been a great friend, one of my best friends since my junior year in high school. It’s really funny because he was there on my draft night and I kept telling him, ‘We’re going to draft you!’ At least, I was telling him, ‘This will be you really soon.’ As the years compiled, I was like, ‘We might really draft you.’ Then, six months or so before the draft, then three months and a month and I’m like, ‘We really, really might draft you.’

Bamba tweeted at Anthony on the night of the NBA draft and hilariously told him that he would pick him up at the airport once he stopped crying at his party. Unfortunately, Anthony later confirmed that Bamba never showed up to pick him.

Bamba admires the love that Anthony has for the game of basketball and loves that they are now teammates once again. The stakes now are much higher than before but they are confident they can lead the Magic in the years to come.

Anthony is averaging 12 points, 3.7 assists, three rebounds and one steal through three games while he is shooting 48.1% from the field. His 36 total points rank fourth among all rookies with one game left to play on Saturday night versus the Charlotte Hornets.

Meanwhile, Bamba was recently cleared for contact in practice for the first time in training camp. The 22-year-old has been held out of basketball activities after working through some lingering effects of the coronavirus but is working toward returning to the court soon.

Orlando kicks off the regular season on Wednesday vs. the Miami Heat.

Boston’s Tacko Fall, Orlando’s Mo Bamba hit the links on their day off

Boston Celtics two way center Tacko Fall joined the Orlando Magic’s Mo Bamba for some golf in the Disney ‘bubble’ on Monday afternoon.

Boston Celtics fan favorite two way big man Tacko Fall took it upon himself to try hitting the links with Orlando Magic center Mo Bamba Monday, trying his hand at the unofficial second sport of the Celtics in the Disney ‘bubble’.

The image in your mind of a 7-foot-5 frontcourt player holding a one fairway wood that looks like it is the size of a mini- golf putter is not far from the reality.

But, Fall’s golf game isn’t the worse for it evidently, as much a surprise to Bamba as it is to the rest of us — it seems like the Senegalese center has a knack for the sport.

Take a look at the clip embedded yourself to see the stroke of the gregarious big man — he’s actually pretty solid for someone who just picked up the sport.

Just don’t expect to see him on the PGA Tour any time soon.

What we know about Friday’s players call to NBA restart season

The NBA has approved the format for a 22-team return to action at the ESPN Wide World of Sport in Florida. But there are still concerns.

The NBA has approved the format for a 22-team return to action at the ESPN Wide World of Sport in Florida. But there are still concerns.

Of course, preventing the spread of coronavirus amidst a global pandemic is a prominent focus of these conversations. There are still tons of questions to be answered about how the league will account for social distancing while on the campus as well as who will be allowed in and out of the bubble.

However, among the issues players have been discussing before a potential return is attention shifting from systemic racism to who did what in the game last night, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Dan Woike noted this as well, explaining implications of a potential return (via LA Times):

“According to multiple players, agents and executives, the belief is that the season is not in serious peril – not yet, at least. But fueled by several concerns, perhaps most prominently that a return to play would serve as a distraction from the Black Lives Matter movement and steps toward racial equality and police reform, there are players considering the possibility of not returning when the season reconvenes.”

Meanwhile, Woj added that players have already lost around $300 million in salary and canceling the remainder of the season would forfeit an additional 25 percent, potentially raising that up to $1.2 billion in lost salary, which was echoed by ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Reports have indicated that the NBPA determined that if a player does not want to play then they can sit out without financial loss so long as they have excused the absence with their team.

With so much at stake, it is no surprise to learn that there was a Zoom call with around 50 players on June 7 to discuss the season restart, per Taylor Rooks.

WHAT WAS THE MOST RECENT CALL ABOUT?

One call, which was led by Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving, was organized for Friday evening.

Most reporting suggests that even though Irving said he was against going to Orlando, he would “ultimately stand with the group” on their decision. This is aligned with reporting from Wojnarowski (via ESPN):

“Several players who have participated in these recent calls and conversations told ESPN that they’re still leaning toward playing in Orlando but want to keep listening and talking about a number of the factors that concern them.”

Yahoo’s Chris Haynes reported that the call elapsed somewhere around an hour and 40 minutes. Rooks added that one hour of the call was focused on social justice reform.

WHO WAS ON THE MOST RECENT CALL?

Bleacher Report’s Howard Beck estimated nearly 200 players were expected on the Friday evening call.

Charania reported that the actual figure was closer to 80 players, Haynes estimated there were “80-plus” players and Woj thinks the total was “nearly 100 players” on Friday night.

According to Charania, the following players dialed in on Friday (via The Athletic):

Chris Paul (Oklahoma City Thunder), Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets), Carmelo Anthony (Portland Trail Blazers), Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz), Malcolm Brogdon (Indiana Pacers), CJ McCollum (Portland Trail Blazers), Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), Justin Holiday (Indiana Pacers), Rudy Gay (San Antonio Spurs), Spencer Dinwiddie (Brooklyn Nets), Harrison Barnes (Sacramento Kings), Al-Farouq Aminu (Orlando Magic), Tobias Harris (Philadelphia 76ers), Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors), Mike Conley (Utah Jazz), Zach Collins (Portland Trail Blazers), Myles Turner (Indiana Pacers).

Marc Stein added that 2017 NBA MVP Russell Westbrook was among the more prominent voices to speak out.

Los Angeles Lakers wing Danny Green, who is the player rep for the team, told USA TODAY’s Mark Medina that he tried to get on the call but was unable to join.

As noted by The Athletic’s Sam Amick, an “invitation was sent to the entire playing body” and only 80-plus players joined. That is only a small portion of the NBA represented.

HOW DID THE CALL GO?

Woj spoke to one play who joined, who summarized a bit of what he heard (via ESPN):

“He’s trying to give players a platform to be able to have a discussion – on the bubble, racial equality and unity … It’s a good call.”

According to Charania, the second person to speak after Irving on the call was Los Angeles Lakers guard Avery Bradley. He was “vocal throughout” and urged players to take a stand.

McCollum reportedly urged his peers to remember that there may be a severe “financial dip” if they do not play and that owners could potentially rip up the collective bargaining agreement, which could lead to a lockout next season.

Some of the players who spoke about potentially not playing, per Charania, were Dwight Howard (Los Angeles Lakers), Mitchell and Anthony. Howard feared that playing would be a “distraction” from productive conversations that the country is currently having.

However, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that LeBron James does not feel that playing would “deter his ability” to inspire change.

Mitchell reportedly feared that NBA players would be “behind the 8-ball” if they were forced to jump back into such a competitive environment after not playing five-on-five basketball due to quarantine. Mitchell tested positive for coronavirus on March 12, 2020. He is reportedly worried about potentially injuring himself and missing an opportunity to sign a max contract extension.

According to Haynes, both Mitchell and Orlando Magic big Mo Bamba are “intimidated to voice an opinion” if it was not the same as the superstars. But this inspired Anthony to call upon the younger voices throughout the call.

As a showing of unity, which seemed to be the primary focus and takeaway, Anthony reportedly suggested that each player on the call donate $25,000 to charity.

Mitchell (as well as other top talents up for contract extensions including Jayson Tatum, De’Aaron Fox, Kyle Kuzma and Bam Adebayo) are now seeking league-financed insurance policies in case of injury, per Woj.

HoopsHype made an effort to reach out to several folks who may have been on the call. One player told HoopsHype that the players all agreed not to talk to the media.

When asked by HoopsHype if they thought the recent conversations will ultimately shut the season down, all prominent agents that spoke believed that the NBA will be back as planned.

Ultimately, the mood seems to be that cooler heads will prevail and the season will resume. There are simply too many financial barriers to jump over as a consequence if it does not.
