Eight former Razorbacks start on MLB Opening Day

Arkansas Razorbacks baseball was well represented across the MLB for Opening Day.

Arkansas Razorbacks baseball was well represented across the MLB for Opening Day.

Eight former Arkansas Razorbacks baseball program players were on an MLB roster during the first pitch. The Diamond Hogs are one of four SEC programs with at least eight former players on MLB Opening Day rosters; Florida (10), Vanderbilt (10), and LSU (8).

Brian Anderson (Brewers) and Andrew Benintendi (White Sox) were the only two who made the starting lineup. Benintendi is probably the best of the bunch. The former SEC Player of the Year bats .278 for his career at the plate. 62 players from the program have gone on to make the big leagues

MLB rookies are getting their debuts memorialized with cool new jersey patches for 1-of-1 Topps cards

Topps and MLB are on to something with these patches.

If you’re into collecting MLB trading cards, the latest news from Topps is sure to add some excitement to the 2023 season.

Beginning with Opening Day, players making their Major League debuts will wear patches on their jersey sleeves that say “MLB Debut.”

Those patches will then be added to Topps rookie trading cards, creating one-of-one collectibles that fans can say came directly from the field of play.

It’s a cool way to memorialize what is a really special moment for players, and add a little more value to rookie cards for fans.

And it helps that the patch looks good.

I haven’t collected cards in quite awhile, but this is the type of thing to make me reconsider.

Cubs Nico Hoerner’s glorious Opening Day dinger is the first home run of the 2022 MLB season

BASEBALL IS BACK!

It feels so good to have baseball back!

Thursday officially marked Opening Day and the start of the 2022 MLB season, coming less than a month after the league ended its 99-day lockout. In the first game of the day — Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs — fans were treated to a glorious first home run of the season thanks to Nico Hoerner.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with one man on base, Hoerner smashed a bullet out to left field for a two-run home run, putting the Cubs up 3-1 in a flash. Seriously, look at that ball soar!

Listen to it. The pop of the bat. The roar of the crowd. How can you not love this? And Cubs fans were absolutely loving it too.

Here’s to many, many more sublime dingers in the dog days of summer to come!

Best MLB value bets for Opening Day 2022

Baseball betting is back.

It felt like this day would never come but MLB Opening Day is finally here.

That’s right folks, the baseball is about to count, and so will you if your bets don’t stink. That’s where I come in and try to make your wagers a little less cringy. But buyer beware, I’m swinging for the fences. We’re trying to count, remember?

These are my best value bets from across the Opening Day slate of games, of which there are seven after two were postponed.

Winner’s Circle: Bet on Tiger Woods to win the Masters, because why not?

If Tiger plays, we win. And if he wins, we win even more.

Welcome to the Winner’s Circle, a weekly column by Bet For The Win senior writer Prince J. Grimes. Here, you’ll read about stats and trends that can help you make informed betting predictions for the week ahead and beyond. Got something you want to see in the next Winners Circle, shoot Prince a message and check back next week for the response.

March Madness was another one for the books, but it’s finally over with the South Carolina women capping their wire-to-wire No. 1 season with a championship and Kansas completing an unbelievable comeback to top North Carolina on the men’s side.

That result might have been a little different if UNC big Armando Bacot were healthy, but he still had a monster impact. And UNC didn’t walk away completely empty handed. They won something like a national championship their previous game, upsetting rival Duke to retire coach Mike Krzyzewski — a result we probably should’ve seen coming.

The NBA’s MVP race continues to be a thrilling ride, as Nikola Jokic has pulled ahead of Joel Embiid as the betting favorite. Most likely feeling the tide shift while he’s still to play at an elite level, Embiid questioned what more he needs to do to prove himself worthy.

In other NBA news, the Utah Jazz continue to gain big leads and blow them. Not only is it a reason they remain tough to trust as the playoffs near, it’s also why they’ve failed to cover a spread in seven straight games, according to Covers.

Finally, the draw for the World Cup was last week and while +10000 odds on the USA to win would make for a nice payout, that’s probably not going to happen.

Here are a few more things I’m looking at in the week ahead.

The Houston Astros will meet the New York Yankees for game two of the three-game set on Wednesday night from Yankees Stadium.

The Astros are looking to bounce back after last night’s 7-3 loss to the Yankees and will send out Luis Garcia tonight, who has not been great and is 0-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Yankees will look to keep their four-game winning streak in tack. They will be countering with Jordan Montgomery to help curb the bats of the Astros for a second straight game.

I’d expect this game to be high-scoring again tonight, here is everything you need to know to catch the action this afternoon.
