2023 MLB odds: Which division is favorite to have the World Series winner?

AL East? NL East? The Dodgers, Yankees, and Braves will certainly play a factor.

The MLB is not an easy game—on the field or in the betting world.

It’s a 162-plus-game marathon with plenty of unknowns lurking in the depths of the baseball diamond each month, tormenting the comfort levels of many fan bases during the long haul of games that stretch into September and October.

With that in mind, there’s little argument as to why picking the World Series winner can be so challenging. It’s a landscape full of peaks and valleys—slumps and triumphs, in the baseball sense—and more so now when the rush of April hasn’t gained full steam.

When there’s still hope for more than a handful of teams.

However, a “futures” wager always introduces the possibility of striking while the proverbial iron is hot. At the same time, while the payouts are at a max.

So, instead of focusing on all 30 teams, we’re taking a glimpse at the collective and calculating the risk-reward for which division is the odds-on favorite to have the 2023 World Series-winning team.

Here’s the breakdown…

How to bet Max Scherzer’s strikeout prop in long-awaited return to Mets

Scherzer will make his first start since May 18.

Max Scherzer is scheduled to make his long-awaited return to the New York Mets rotation Tuesday in Cincinnati against the Reds. It’ll be his first appearance in more than a month since suffering a strained oblique on May 18.

If the plan is to ease Scherzer back into action, his return couldn’t come against a better opponent. At 27 wins, the Reds are tied with the Oakland A’s for the fewest in the majors. And their below average offense has been especially futile more recently, striking out at a rate higher than every team but the awful Angels in the last week.

This puts tremendous value on Scherzer’s strikeout prop Tuesday. The line is 7.5, and I’m hammering the over for plus money on Tipico Sportsbook.

[tipico]

A minimum of eight strikeouts is a lot to expect of someone in their first start back from injury, but Scherzer is up to it. He threw 80 pitches in a rehab start last Wednesday, striking out eight in 4.2 innings. The pitch count suggests he’ll be able to work deep against the Reds. The last three starters Cincinnati has faced all tallied at least nine strikeouts, including the Mets’ Taijuan Walker on Monday.

SNY reports that Scherzer will throw for around six innings and 90 pitches, depending on how he feels. That’s more than enough opportunity.

Additionally, and most obviously, Scherzer’s return bolster’s New York’s title chances. The team won the same amount of games in the time it was without him as it did before he was injured. At 20 games over .500, they’re tied for the most wins in the NL and are now getting a three-time Cy Young winner back. And let’s not forget, they have another two-time Cy Young winner who hasn’t even pitched a game this season returning soon in Jacob deGrom.

Their World Series odds can be had at +750 on Tipico, fourth-shortest behind the Yankees, Astros and Dodgers. And we haven’t even seen the full potential of the Mets just yet, adding to the appeal in their futures odds.

Sports Betting Futures: World Series, WNBA and MLS odds entering July

We have a new title favorite in Major League Baseball.

The Dodgers have officially been passed as the betting favorites to win the World Series as we enter July, with the red-hot Yankees now leading the pack at +380 odds. Even the Houston Astros moved up from +900 to +550 over the last month, nearing the Dodgers’ second-shortest odds at +425.

The biggest MLB movement since the beginning of June, however, is in the AL MVP race where Aaron Judge went from plus money and second-shortest odds to the unquestioned favorite to win the award at -110. He passed last year’s winner, Shohei Ohtani, who remains top-two, albeit a distant second at +300.

In the W, the Las Vegas Aces are the favorites to claim that league’s title at +125, with star forward A’ja Wilson far and away the favorite to win MVP. And LAFC holds the edge in Major League Soccer.

Below is a full picture of title and award odds from each league, via Tipico Sportsbook.
