Chiefs president Mark Donovan discusses deadline on future at Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas City #Chiefs president Mark Donovan discusses deadline on future at Arrowhead Stadium | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs veterans are coming to Missouri Western’s campus in St. Joseph, Missouri, for training camp. The rookies have had time to get early work, and adding the rest of the roster will open up more drills and full team practices.

Chiefs president Mark Donovan addressed the media on Friday, discussing the looming decision regarding the team’s future at Arrowhead Stadium.

“This is a generational decision,” said Donovan. “This is going to impact the future of this franchise for generations.”

The Chiefs and Royals have played at Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium for over five decades. The outdated conditions at the Truman Sports Complex could be the catalyst for a move of bath franchises in the near future.

“We have to get this right,” said Donovan. “We are going to do the due diligence. We are going to take our time and do it right. But there is a reality to the timing. You can only take so much time to get it right. And that window is starting to close.”

Logistics regarding parking lot size and the Chiefs’ hopes of hosting a Super Bowl one day are all being considered, as the Chiefs don’t want to fall behind other franchises with significant upgrades to their home facilities.

“Really, the deadline is how you can be up and running in a new facility or a renovated facility for January of the 2031 season,” said Donovan. “You’re looking at an existing structure, something we’ve done a lot of work on; there is a little less lead time. If you are talking about something new, it extends the lead time a year and a half. So we feel like we’re in the window now to get something done in the next six months to be in a good position. That’s the timeline we’re working on.”

The next few months will be critical regarding the team’s future location, making each game slated at Arrowhead Stadium more precious than usual.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid discusses training camp benefits: ‘It builds a certain camaraderie’

Kansas City #Chiefs HC Andy Reid discusses training camp benefits: “It builds a certain camaraderie” | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs will again call Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph home for the next few weeks for training camp. The franchise has made the campus its second home for years, and it was the spark for three Super Bowl titles.

On Tuesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with media members while settling in on campus. He proudly discussed the importance of holding camp away from the city and not holding joint practices with other teams.

“We love the setup here. The people here treat us great at Missouri Western State University and its beautiful facilities,” said Reid. “It’s great to be able to get away from the city and be able to house guys in the same dorm.”

Reid’s training camps have earned a reputation for being challenging and mastering his fast system. During the training camp session, an increased focus on details is carved out, and the closed quarters of the campus help get the message across.

“I’m saying this as a coach — they’re probably not going to say this — it builds a certain camaraderie as you go,” said Reid. “You’re eating together; you’re sleeping in the same building together, so you can’t help but talk to each other. In today’s world, that’s a positive thing.”

The journey to a potential three-peat starts now, and the essential aspect of the formula is in motion with camp getting underway.

WATCH: Chiefs RBs Jerick McKinnon, Clyde Edwards-Helaire get creative with autographs

Jerick McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire got creative with their autographs at the #Chiefs’ training camp workouts on Friday.

Kansas City Chiefs running backs Jerick McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire got creative during the team’s autograph session in St. Joseph this morning, signing a young fan’s shoes after workouts concluded.

A video of their interaction hit Twitter on Friday morning when the Chiefs’ official page noted the backs’ hilarious walk up to the young fan.

Moments like this are part of the appeal for fans who make the trip to Missouri Western State University to watch the Chiefs run their drills at training camp. With a group of personalities like Kansas City hosts on its roster, these types of interactions are commonplace.

The team’s workouts on Friday were the last before their preseason schedule officially kicks off on Sunday when the Chiefs are set to face the New Orleans Saints in a highly anticipated exhibition matchup.

Watch for both McKinnon and Edwards-Helaire to be featured in Andy Reid’s game plan as the veteran head coach figure out his plan of attack for the 2023 regular season.

WATCH: Chiefs TE Travis Kelce ‘making friends’ at training camp

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce is having no problem making friends at training camp in St. Joseph.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is among the NFL’s most admired personalities and has had no problem getting back in his groove at training camp in St. Joseph. A leader in the Chiefs’ offense and one of the league’s most marketable stars, Kelce enters the 2023 season facing high expectations as Kansas City looks to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

The veteran tight end is entering his 11th season with the Chiefs and will look to reinvent himself to take Kansas City’s offense to new heights in the coming campaign. Kelce was spotted bonding with teammates at Chiefs training camp practice earlier in the week and told the camera about his desire to “make some friends” during the hot summer workouts at Missouri Western State University.

The appearance of second-year running back Isiah Pacheco in the short clip was a welcome sign for fans who are eager to see Kansas City’s offense back on the field together for the first time after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVII win back in February.

Though Kelce and Pacheco aren’t likely to see much action in Sunday’s preseason kickoff against the New Orleans Saints, the pair can be expected to continue growing closer as training camp draws to a close and the regular season approaches.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs to conduct first practice in full pads on Friday

The #Chiefs will conduct their first practice in full pads on Friday and run drills with full-contact through the end of their training camp.

Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs roster will don full pads during workouts for the first time this year at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri on Friday.

To this point, the Chiefs have conducted their practices in shells that do not offer the full complement of protection that they wear during an actual game. As such, they have not been making full contact or tackling each other to the ground as they have conducted drills since Sunday’s first full-scale exercises.

While it is sure to be exciting for fans in attendance at Missouri Western State University to see the team playing football as it was intended to be played, this development will present an elevated risk of injury for players who participate in each of the Chiefs’ workouts.

Keep an eye out for the Kansas City’s injury report after each practice from Friday onward as Chiefs coaches keep fans and the media abreast of any news related to players getting banged up during practice.

Chiefs extend deal with Missouri Western for training camp to remain in St. Joseph

The #Chiefs have officially agreed to return to Missouri Western State University for training camp through 2024.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that they have extended their deal with Missouri Western State University to host their annual training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri through the 2024 NFL season.

Kansas City had two option years remaining on its contract with the school heading into the 2023 NFL offseason and exercised those option years. The home of the Griffons has been the home of the Chiefs’ training camp during every year that they’ve held a training camp since 2010.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will return to Missouri Western State University and the St. Joseph community for another two years,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said, via press release. “Missouri Western and St. Joseph have warmly hosted our team and fans for the past 13 years – a welcome start to the  NFL season. I want to thank President Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy and Director of Athletics Andy Carter for their leadership throughout this process, and we look forward to starting our 2023 season at Missouri Western again this summer.”

2023 marks the 13th season that the Chiefs will head to the Missouri Western State University campus for training camp. They’ve had five training camp host sites during franchise history and this one will now become the third-longest host for training camp.

“Welcome back to Missouri Western,” Missouri Western State University President Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy said. “We’re thrilled to have the Super Bowl Champions back on campus and look forward to providing a top-notch experience to the team and their fans as they prepare for another successful season. We’re grateful to the Chiefs for making us their summer training camp home and to the St. Joseph community for embracing the team and its fans.”

Official dates and times for the Chiefs’ training camp will be announced by the team in mid-June.

Missouri Western director expects return to normalcy for Chiefs training camp

#ChiefsCamp will have a sense of normalcy this year at Missouri Western State University says Director of Athletics Andrew Carter. | from @EdEastonJr

The last few years have been a challenge for teams opening training camps in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The uncertainty prompted the decision to be cautious at training camp, making locations adjust for safety. That was the case at Missouri Western State University for the Kansas City Chiefs, who canceled things like post-practice autograph sessions last season due to the virus.

The Chiefs will report for their 12th training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri at the Missouri Western State campus starting later this week. In preparation for this year’s camp, the Griffons’ new Director of Athletics, Andrew Carter, shared his thoughts in a recent interview with News-Press NOW. He addressed the campus atmosphere heading into camp and expects it to return to pre-pandemic conditions.

“I think what I hear the most is the return to normal,” said Carter. “I think it’s going to look like what I’ve been told 2019 looked like, and that’s pretty good buzz.”

The return to normalcy is a positive step in the right direction for the University in its relationship with the Chiefs. The two sides have worked smoothly for years and appreciate the support both have supplied in the partnership.

“Its exposure and connection is difficult to buy,” said Carter. “I mean, I don’t know if you could put a dollar amount on it. The chance to not only expose our athletic facilities, but to expose our campus and our people, and hopefully they come away with just a tremendous sense of community, and that’s part of one of our core values.”

Kansas City has two option years remaining on its contract with the school and could seek to extend for more years. The Chiefs are one of seven NFL teams to travel away from their home facilities for training camp. Carter appears to be on board with keeping things that way and maintaining the partnership long-term.
