2022 Missouri Valley Conference tournament: Best bets, sleepers and storylines

Previewing the Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball tournament.

When you think of the Missouri Valley Conference, what comes to mind? Some will think of Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores. Many will remember “The Shot” from Ali Farokhmanesh to lift Northern Iowa over Kansas in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. But the majority of people will bring up Loyola Chicago and all the noise the team has made in recent years come tourney time.

Although the MVC has its household name (Loyola), the conference has continuously proven its competitive balance through the years β€” 2022 is no different. The MVC standings concluded with at least four teams turning in double-digits conference wins for the fourth straight season. Likewise, it was the fourth year in a row that the top two seeds finished no more than a game apart in the standings.

Another competitive tournament is slated for March 3rd. Let’s dig into everything from sleeper teams to players to watch.

Oklahoma hiring Drake’s Jennie Baranczyk as new head women’s basketball coach

Oklahoma is hiring Drake’s Jennie Baranczyk as the new head coach of the Sooners women’s basketball.

A little over three weeks after long-time Oklahoma women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale announced her retirement, the Sooners have found her replacement.

Former Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk was officially announced as the new leader of the program on Saturday in an official release.

At just 39 years old, Baranczyk built Drake into one of the very best programs in the Missouri Valley Conference, winning the league in 2017, 2018 and 2019. She was also named the coach of the year in the conference in both 2017 and 2018. She previously spent time at Kansas State, Marquette and Colorado as an assistant before taking over with the Bulldogs in 2012.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be named the next head coach for the University of Oklahoma’s women’s basketball program and follow the highly successful and much-admired Sherri Coale,” said Baranczyk in the release. “My coaching philosophy is based upon the most powerful human emotion to me and that is love. The players who put on this jersey must love the game, love to compete and love OU.

“We are going to compete at the highest level on the court and in the classroom. We will play hard, play together and be fun to watch. I’m looking forward to being at Oklahoma where there are amazing people and where we can – and will – compete for championships.”

As a player, Baranczyk (then by the name of Jennie Lillis) was one of the elite players in the history of the Iowa Hawkeyes. From 2000-2004, she was an all-Big Ten selection three times and graduated as the only player in program history inside the top 10 in all five categories of points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.

Now, she takes over the helm for the legendary Coale to try and get Oklahoma women’s basketball back to prestige it once had. Athletic director Joe Castiglione released a statement on the new hire:

“This is a truly exciting day for our university and athletics department, as we welcome Jennie Baranczyk as our new head women’s basketball coach,” said Castiglione. “Her track record of overseeing creative and effective offenses, and producing high win totals, conference championships and postseason appearances during her time at Drake certainly appealed to our search committee as it evaluated the very competitive candidate pool. But her mastery of the head coaching role extends far beyond the court, and it’s clear that her personal and professional values align with ours.

“Jennie prioritizes the overall well-being of everyone in her program, is passionate about empowering her student-athletes and recognizes that a program is only as good as its people. She is family-oriented and community-minded, both of which will help her generate enthusiasm among our fans and as she works to return our program to Big 12 and national prominence. We are thrilled that she and her husband Scott and kids Eli, Jordi and Hope have joined the OU family, and we are so eager for their arrival in Norman.”

University of Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. also offered some words on the hire:

“We’re thrilled to have Coach Baranczyk join the Sooner Nation,” said OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. “Her enthusiastic coaching style fits perfectly in our culture and her track record of excellence will serve our student-athletes and our program well into the future. The Baranczyks will make a wonderful addition to our OU family.”

An offseason of change for both Oklahoma basketball programs is starting to have both teams take more shape, as they now each have their new head coaches after Porter Moser was named the new leader of the men’s team a week ago.

Big Sky, Missouri Valley Football Conferences move to spring football

Big Sky, Missouri Valley Conferences move to spring football. This will have big draft implications for Trey Lance and Dillon Radunz

In recent weeks, several conferences in the Football Bowl Subdivision altered their schedules to conference-only formats in an effort to forge ahead with a season during the continued COVID-19 pandemic.

Their counterparts at the Football Championship Subdivision, however, are moving in a different direction.

The first conference to announce such a move was the Big Sky Conference, home to teams as Eastern Washington, Montana and Montana State. In a statement from one of the conference’s athletic directors, Darren Dunn from Northern Colorado framed the decision in terms of health and safety:

We have worked tirelessly with the Big Sky staff, our staff, coaches, medical experts and local and state health officials over the past months to determine a safe and feasible path forward. We feel, for the sport of football, it is best to play the Big Sky Conference schedule in the Spring. Statement from University Northern Colorado Head Football Coach Ed McCaffrey: While I am deeply disappointed for our guys and coaches, I understand and applaud our leadership for making the difficult decision to put the health and safety of our student-athletes first. There are still a lot of unknowns but we will use this time to further player development within the program and will be ready when we get the opportunity to play.

Perhaps more notable is the decision from the Missouri Valley Football Conference, home to the North Dakota State Bison, winners of three-straight FCS titles. Their decision to move to the spring was first reported on Friday morning by Ross Uglem of 247sports:

Then the conference confirmed this news late on Friday.

With NDSU facing a spring schedule, two players have massive decisions to make: quarterback Trey Lance and offensive tackle Dillon Radunz.

Both players are viewed as potential first-round selections. Lance has become a darling of the draft media world, starting during this past season and reaching a fever pitch when ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. immediately named him as one of the top quarterbacks to watch in the aftermath of the 2020 NFL Draft. For more on what Lance brings to the table as a prospect, be sure to read this film breakdown on the NDSU passer. A rising redshirt sophomore, Lance was not a lock to even enter the draft, despite the lofty expectations in front of him. He could decide to simply play in the spring and look to the 2022 Draft, opt-out and enter, or potentially look to transfer to a school and play this fall, although time is running short.

Then there is Radnuz. The left tackle and rising redshirt senior might not be the household name that his quarterback is, but is viewed quite favorably in the scouting world. In their preseason Big Board, The Draft Network has Radunz ranked as third-best offensive tackle, and the 30th player overall    TDN had this to say about the NDSU starting left tackle over the past two season:

Dillon aligns at LT for the Bison spread offense. He is a sufficient athlete with regards to his agility and fluidity in his movements. He has good body control and balance and is rarely on the ground. In the run game, he’s got sufficient initial quickness out of his stance. Radunz is physical and tough and plays with good block temperament as he finishes. He’s sufficient at getting on moving defenders at the second level. In the passing game, he is proficient and wins with good technique, competitiveness and toughness. He is good in his pass set and his lateral agility allows him to redirect on a cross face or counter move by the defender. His technique with regards to hand placement is good. His punch is sufficient and plays with sufficient length on the perimeter. His short set anchor is sufficient but his competitiveness and toughness shine to allow him to successfully handle bull rushers who have gotten under his pads.

With the constant need for starting tackles in the NFL, Radunz could have solidified a first-round position – and an early one at that – with a solid fall. Now he faces a difficult decision with this move by the MVC.

MWC Final: Valparaiso vs. Bradley odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Valparaiso vs. Bradley college basketball matchup, with college basketball betting odds, picks and best bets.

The Valparaiso Crusaders (19-15) meet the Bradley Braves (22-11) in the Missouri Valley Conference title game Sunday at 2:05 p.m. ET at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. We analyze the Valparaiso-Bradley odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Valparaiso vs. Bradley: Three things you need to know

1. The 7-seed Crusaders of Valpo have been Cinderella in the conference tourney colloquially referred to as ‘Arch Madness’. Valpo topped Evansville 58-55 on Thursday, stunned Loyola-Chicago 74-73 in OT Friday, then dumped Missouri State 89-82 Saturday in a 6-7 game to punch their ticket to the final.

2. The 4-seed Braves of Bradley are less of a surprise to be in the title game. They snuck by Southern Illinois 64-59 in the quarters Friday before racking up a 10-point win over another upstart, Drake, by a 76-66 score.

3. Bradley and Valpo split their regular-season series, with the Braves winning 80-69 Jan. 29 and the Crusaders winning 90-78 Feb. 22. Both games saw the home team win and the Over hit.

Prediction

Bradley 79, Valparaiso 76

Moneyline (ML)

Valparaiso is the underdog in this one at +135. While I expect a tight game, I like BRADLEY -162 to hold the Crusaders off in this one.

New to sports betting? A $10 successful bet on Bradley to win outright returns a profit of $6.17.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Valparaiso (+2.5, +100) hasn’t been terribly steady all season, but the Crusaders are playing their best basketball of the season and have been cover kings lately. The Crusaders finished the regular season 6-1 ATS in their final seven games — including that straight-up win over Bradley (-2.5, -121 for Sunday’s game) Feb. 22 — and they’re 3-0 SU/2-1 ATS in the MVC tourney so far.

The Braves might sneak away with a ticket to the dance, but the Crusaders will make them work for it. A slight lean here for BRADLEY -2.5 (-121).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over in the two regular-season meetings between Valpo and Bradley, and taking OVER 132.5 (-110) is a good play Sunday. The Over has hit in the past two for the Crusaders, including an 89-point performance by their offense against Missouri State in Saturday’s semis. Bradley hit the over in their final five of the regular season, while going 1-1 with the total in the tourney so far.
