Previewing Tuesday’s Minnesota Golden Gophers at Illinois Fighting Illini sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-0) squares off with the Illinois Fighting Illini (4-2) in both teams’ Big Ten season opener at State Farm Center in Champaign. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Minnesota-Illinois college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Fighting Illini are No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s College Basketball Coaches Poll.

Minnesota at Illinois: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Minnesota +300 (bet $100 to win $300) | Illinois -400 (bet $400 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota +8 (-110) | Illinois -8 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 146 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Minnesota at Illinois: Three things to know

  1. Minnesota demolished Missouri Kansas City 90-61 and covered the spread as a massive 17-point favorite. The Golden Gophers lived at the free-throw line against the Roos, going 34-for-44 from the charity stripe while Kansas City was just 8 of 19.
  2. Illinois has lost two of its last three games, including an 81-78 loss to Missouri Dec. 12 as a 3.5-point favorite. Unlike Minnesota, the Fighting Illini lost because of a free throw disadvantage of 17 to Missouri’s 26 made free throws and they were also out-rebounded 35-26.
  3. Minnesota-Illinois features a fun point guard duel with Golden Gophers PG Marcus Carr matched up against Fighting Illini PG Ayo Dosunmu, both of which lead their teams in points and assists per game.

Minnesota at Illinois: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 70, Illinois 67

Money line (ML)

Minnesota is the deeper and more experienced team, The Gophers also have a lineup and style that matches up really well against Illinois.

Most teams don’t have the backcourt to hang with Dosunmu but the Golden Gophers, and Carr specifically, should be up to the challenge. Plus, Minnesota has its own 7-foot big man in C Liam Robbins to take on Illinois C Kofi Cockburn.

“LEAN” MINNESOTA (+300) for a quarter-unit because I like them plus the points. It’s an optimal long-term strategy to sprinkle on heavy underdogs you bet to cover the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

Where Minnesota has a significant edge is in the turnover battle. The Golden Gophers are ranked 28th in turnovers per game and 42nd in opponents’ turnovers per game while the Fighting Illini are 221st in turnovers and 243rd in opponents’ turnovers per game.

If Minnesota can win the turnover battle, it’ll control the tempo and cash tickets for its backers. Also, 80% of the money is on Illinois but the line hasn’t budged from the opening number, according to Pregame.com.

The House is OK with everyone taking Illinois so let’s BET MINNESOTA +8 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

I only “LEAN” UNDER 146 (-105) because the teams’ 2020 O/U trends heavily point to the Over. Minnesota-Illinois each play at an above-average pace and have a combined 9-3 O/U record on the year.

Several of the same players were in this game last season and the 59-51 Illinois win fell way short of the projected total of 135. We’ll get a little better shooting in this game but I think these teams get after it defensively.

Minnesota at Nebraska odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Minnesota at Nebraska sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-3, 2-3 Big Ten) visit the Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-4, 2-4) Saturday for a noon ET kickoff. Below, we analyze the Minnesota-Nebraska college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Minnesota at Nebraska: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 7:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Minnesota +300 (bet $100 to win $300) | Nebraska -375 (bet $375 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota +10.5 (-110) | Nebraska -10.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 59.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Minnesota at Nebraska: Three things to know

  1. The Golden Gophers are coming off a 34-31 win over Purdue on Nov. 20, cashing as 2.5-point underdogs. They have missed a couple of weekends due to COVID-19 concerns. They have been a scoring machine on the road this season, averaging 42.5 PPG. They had their most complete game of the season in a 41-14 win at Illinois on Nov. 7, and they lost an overtime heartbreaker at Maryland on Oct. 30, 45-44.
  2. Minnesota has had plenty of studs in the backfield, such as Marion Barber III, Laurence Maroney, David Cobb, Amir Pinnix and Rodney Smith, in recent years. Mohamed Ibrahim is quickly moving up the charts with 817 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in just five games this season. The single-season record is 18 rushing scores by Gary Russell in 2005, and that was over a full schedule.
  3. Like the Gophers, the last win for the Cornhuskers was against Purdue. They won in West Lafayette last Saturday by a 37-27 count as one-point underdogs. Nebraska finds themselves favored by double digits here, and they’re 0-1 SU/ATS as a double-digit favorite, stumbling against Illinois 41-23 on Nov. 21 while laying 17.

Minnesota at Nebraska: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 34, Nebraska 29

Money line (ML)

MINNESOTA (+300) offers the opportunity for the rare “triple up” here, and Nebraska (-375) just hasn’t been that consistent where they deserve to be overwhelming favorites against anyone.

Against the spread (ATS)

MINNESOTA +10.5 (-110) getting double digits is a very good value play, as Ibrahim gives them a tremendous opportunity at the ground and pound. Nebraska -10.5 (-110) is just so-so against the rush, allowing 170.0 yards per game on the ground. The Golden Gophers are 7-2-1 ATS in their past 10 on the road and 4-1 ATS in the past five as a road ‘dog.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 59.5 (-110) is the play here. While the Huskers have hit the Under in five of the past six, the Over is 4-1 in the past five at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The Over is also 5-2 in Nebraska’s past seven following a straight-up win. Minnesota has rolled up nine Over results in the past 12 overall, including an 8-3 mark in the past 11 conference contests.

Purdue at Minnesota odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Purdue Boilermakers at Minnesota Golden Gophers sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Purdue Boilermakers (2-1 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-3, 1-3) in a Friday Big Ten West tussle at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Purdue-Minnesota college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Purdue at Minnesota: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated 12:05 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Purdue -115 (bet $115 to win $100) | Minnesota -106 (bet $106 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Purdue -1 (-110) | Minnesota +1 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 60.5 (O: -115 | U: -106)

Purdue at Minnesota: Three things to know

  • Minnesota won last year’s meeting 38-31 in a late September game at West Lafayette, Ind. Trailing 28-17 entering the final quarter, Purdue managed to score two touchdowns in the final 6 minutes to make it close. The Boilermakers were a minus-2 in turnover margin in what was a relatively even-yardage game.
  • The Gophers have won five straight series games at home vs. the Boilermakers. Minnesota is 3-2 ATS over those five contests, but the two non-covers were in games that had the Gophers tabbed as double-digit favorites (2014, ’16).
  • Junior RB Mohamed Ibrahim has helped the Golden Gophers pile up over 35 minutes of possession time per game. Ibrahim is a workhorse back who has averaged 32.5 carries per game and 5.5 yards per attempt. His 715 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs have been a key part of a Minnesota offense which ranks fourth in the nation in time of possession (35:36).

Purdue at Minnesota: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 28, Purdue 27

Money line (ML)

The Gophers are a slight lean, but not enough to warrant a play on implied odds of 51.46%. It’d require a tag of +140-or-better to make for some value here. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven games in this series. The Golden Gophers lost to Iowa last week; they are 6-1 ATS over their last seven games following a straight-up loss.

The Minnesota offense has been really bad (7.9 yards per play — 126th FBS) in its four games, but that YPP figure is tinged with a horrendous start over the team’s first two games and a better effort over the last two. The UM defensive struggles also overshadow Purdue’s offensive woes: The Boilermakers’ 369 yards per game rank 86th in the nation.

Minnesota was undone by horrible field position in last week’s contest. Figure on UM having enough pass defense and enough of a ground game to cover here. Back the GOPHERS +1 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Gophers will want to clock a lead or anything close. A 20-something-20-something score is more likely than either side getting 35. Back the UNDER 60.5 (-106).

Iowa at Minnesota odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Iowa Hawkeyes at Minnesota Golden Gophers sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (1-2 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-2, 1-2) Friday as the two rivals will battle for the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Iowa-Minnesota college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Iowa at Minnesota: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:15 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Iowa -167 (bet $167 to win $100) | Minnesota +140 (bet $100 to win $140)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa -3.5 (-110) | Minnesota +3.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 57.5 (O: -115 | U: -106)

Iowa at Minnesota: Three things to know

  1. After losing the first two games of the season by a combined 5 points, the Hawkeyes went to East Lansing and crushed Michigan State 49-7 as 5.5-point favorites last week. RB Tyler Goodson ran for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries as the Hawkeyes outrushed the Spartans 226-59. QB Spencer Petras threw for 167 yards and 1 touchdown, WR Charlie Jones added a 54-yard punt return for a TD, and the defense finished with 3 turnovers – all interceptions.
  2. The Golden Gophers also picked up their first win of 2020 with a 41-14 rout at winless Illinois last Saturday. RB Mohamed Ibrahim ran for 224 yards and 4 TDs on 30 carries – he had 207 rushing yards and 4 TDs the previous week. QB Tanner Morgan completed 17 of 27 passes for 231 yards and a score as the Gophers easily covered as 7.5-point favorites. They lead the Big Ten West Division with 439.3 yards per game.
  3. Iowa has won the last 5 in the series, including last season’s 23-19 home victory that spoiled then-No. 8 Minnesota’s hopes of making the College Football Playoff. The Gophers were 9-0 at the time.

Iowa at Minnesota: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 27, Minnesota 21

Money line (ML)

PASS. Unless you prefer to lay -167 juice over laying the points at -110.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA -3.5 (-110) is the play. Both teams should be feeling confident after impressive wins last week, but they came against inferior teams. The Hawkeyes get the nod because of defense. Iowa is allowing 17.3 points per game (15th in the country), and 315.0 yards per game (19th). Minnesota yields 36.0 PPG (92nd) and 480 YPG (112). As long as the Hawkeyes can slow down Gophers RB Ibrahim, the Floyd of Rosedale trophy remains in Iowa City.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 57.5 (-106) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Expect both teams to attempt to win this one at the line of scrimmage with a strong running game. That takes time off the clock. Plus, Iowa’s defense is overlooked. It’s already played tough games – both losses – vs. Purdue and Northwestern.

Minnesota at Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Minnesota Golden Gophers at Illinois Fighting Illini sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) visit the Illinois Fighting Illini (0-2, 0-2), which have been ravaged by COVID-19 protocols. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Minnesota-Illinois college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Minnesota at Illinois: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 9 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Minnesota -271 (bet $271 to win $100) | Illinois +220 (bet $100 to win $220)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota -7 (-115) | Illinois +7 (-106)
  • Over/Under: 61.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Minnesota at Illinois: Three things to know

  1. The Illini have been hit hard by COVID-19, missing 14 players in last week’s 31-24 home loss to Purdue due to positive tests and contact tracing. They covered as 9.5-point underdogs thanks to a 14-0 fourth-quarter. At least 12 players, including QB Brandon Peters and PK James McCourt, are expected to miss Saturday’s contest. Fourth-string QB Coran Taylor could make his first career start – he played the majority of the Purdue game (273 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions) after third-stringer Matt Robinson injured his ankle on the Illini’s first possession. Robinson’s status is unknown as of Thursday.
  2. Minnesota blew a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter of a 45-44 overtime loss at Maryland last week. The Gophers gave up 675 total yards, including 281 on the ground, to the Terps. A bright note for Minnesota was RB Mohamed Ibrahim, who ran for 207 yards (on 41 carries) and tied the school record with 4 rushing touchdowns. The Gophers will be without defensive coordinator Joe Rossi Saturday as he tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.
  3. The Gophers have won four of the their last five vs. the Illini, including a 40-17 rout in Minneapolis last year. The Illini are 19-15-1 at home in the series, including a 55-31 victory in 2018.

Minnesota at Illinois: Odds, predictions, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 35, Illinois 24

Money line (ML)

AVOID. The Gophers (-271) should win against the undermanned Illini, but the price is a bit high. Plus, it’s definitely not worth the risk considering how Minnesota fell apart in the final quarter last week.

Against the spread (ATS)

MINNESOTA -7 (-115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. With Illinois short-handed, Minnesota should be able to build a decent lead and will be determined and focused to shut the door in the final quarter following last week’s debacle. The Gophers defense is a concern, but the Illini will struggle to run the ball with the personnel they have available.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 61.5 (-110). This number is too high for these two. Minnesota has enough offensive weapons to score in the 30’s, but Illinois doesn’t.

Minnesota at Maryland odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Minnesota Golden Gophers at Maryland Terrapins sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) visit the Maryland Terrapins (0-1, 0-1) Friday at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Minnesota-Maryland college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Minnesota at Maryland: Betting odds and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Minnesota -910 (bet $910 to win $100) | Maryland +590 (bet $100 to win $590)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota -19.5 (-106) | Maryland +19.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 61.5 (O: -106 | U: -115)

Minnesota at Maryland: Three things to know

  1. The Gophers lost their season opener to the Michigan Wolverines 49-24 last Saturday. QB Tanner Morgan completed 18-of-31 passes for 197 yards with a touchdown and one interception for Minnesota, which was a 3-point underdog. His top target was Rashod Bateman (101 yards, 9 catches), while RB Mohamed Ibrahim led the ground attack with 140 yards and two TDs on 26 carries. Meanwhile, the defense gave up 481 yards – 256 rushing and 225 passing. Minnesota fell out of the Amway Coaches Poll (powered by USA TODAY Sports) after being ranked No. 21.
  2. Maryland, a 13.5-point underdog, suffered a much uglier loss in its opener, getting smoked 43-3 at Northwestern. Like the Gophers, the Terrapins also scored first – they kicked a 33-yard field goal to cap an opening, 12-play drive. The Terps defense couldn’t stop the Wildcats offense, which scored TDs on its next two possessions and eventually built a 30-3 halftime lead. Maryland allowed Northwestern to rack up 537 total yards, including 325 on the ground. The Terrapins were held to 207 total yards and just 14 first downs. QB Taulia Tagovailoa (yes, the younger brother of Tua) had a rough first career start, throwing three interceptions and completing 14 of 25 pass attempts for 94 yards.
  3. Minnesota dominated Maryland in last year’s meeting, rolling to a 52-10 home victory. It was quite a turnaround from 2018 when the Terps won 42-13 on their home turf. Maryland, which joined the Big Ten in 2014, is 2-2 vs. Minnesota in conference games and leads the all-time series 3-2.

Minnesota at Maryland: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 48, Maryland 23

Money line (ML)

AVOID. One would have to wager more than nine times their potential return on Minnesota (-910). That’s just not wise.

Against the spread (ATS)

MINNESOTA -19.5 (-106) is worth a small play – half your usual wager. The Gophers just ran into a good Michigan team last week. They have the talent and they’ll bounce back. This is a team that opened last season 9-0 before falling at Iowa and at home to Wisconsin. They would go on to beat Auburn 31-24 in the Outback Bowl.

The Terrapins, who haven’t had a winning season since 2014, are just bad. They finished 3-9 overall last season with a 1-9 Big Ten record.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 61.5 (-106) is the way to go. If it drops to 60, this becomes a STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. The Terrapins won’t be able to stop the Gophers, but they might score some junk points when the game gets of hand.
