Minnesota at Illinois odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Minnesota at Illinois odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) will face the Illinois Fighting Illini (5-1, 2-1) on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Minnesota vs. Illinois odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Golden Gophers are coming off of a bye week following a disappointing 20-10 setback against Purdue in Week 5, their 1st loss of the season. Minnesota is expected to have RB Mohamed Ibrahim back in the mix on Saturday. He has rushed for 567 yards and 8 TDs in 4 games.

The Fighting Illini have already tied their win total from a season ago as coach Bret Bielema has them playing inspired in his 2nd year with the program. Illinois will also lean on its ground game, led by RB Chase Brown, who has 879 rushing yards and 4 rushing TDs in 6 games.

Minnesota at Illinois picks and predictions

Prediction

Minnesota 20, Illinois 17

Moneyline

This should be a competitive game between 2 Big Ten programs, but Minnesota should be able to pull off the win on the road. That being said, just AVOID the moneyline in this game as the Golden Gophers don’t have odds that are worth taking straight up.

Against the spread

Both of these teams are a combined 8-3 ATS, so it’s tough to side 1 way or the other. ILLINOIS +6.5 (-112) is where I’m leaning in this game with the Fighting Illini having the running game and the defense to keep it close.

Illinois is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games following an ATS loss and is 7-1-1 ATS in its last 9 games against a team with a winning record.

Over/Under

UNDER 39.5 (-112) looks to be the move despite it being a low total. Minnesota and Illinois have formidable rushing attacks and defenses that should keep the scoring pretty low in a pivotal Big Ten showdown.

The Golden Gophers have hit the Under in 4 of their last 5 games against a team with a winning record and the Fighting Illini have hit the Under in each of their last 5 games following an ATS loss. Also, the Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between Minnesota and Illinois.

The Fighting Illini are No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s College Basketball Coaches Poll.

  • Money line: Minnesota +300 (bet $100 to win $300) | Illinois -400 (bet $400 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota +8 (-110) | Illinois -8 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 146 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Minnesota at Illinois: Three things to know

  1. Minnesota demolished Missouri Kansas City 90-61 and covered the spread as a massive 17-point favorite. The Golden Gophers lived at the free-throw line against the Roos, going 34-for-44 from the charity stripe while Kansas City was just 8 of 19.
  2. Illinois has lost two of its last three games, including an 81-78 loss to Missouri Dec. 12 as a 3.5-point favorite. Unlike Minnesota, the Fighting Illini lost because of a free throw disadvantage of 17 to Missouri’s 26 made free throws and they were also out-rebounded 35-26.
  3. Minnesota-Illinois features a fun point guard duel with Golden Gophers PG Marcus Carr matched up against Fighting Illini PG Ayo Dosunmu, both of which lead their teams in points and assists per game.

Minnesota at Illinois: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 70, Illinois 67

Money line (ML)

Minnesota is the deeper and more experienced team, The Gophers also have a lineup and style that matches up really well against Illinois.

Most teams don’t have the backcourt to hang with Dosunmu but the Golden Gophers, and Carr specifically, should be up to the challenge. Plus, Minnesota has its own 7-foot big man in C Liam Robbins to take on Illinois C Kofi Cockburn.

“LEAN” MINNESOTA (+300) for a quarter-unit because I like them plus the points. It’s an optimal long-term strategy to sprinkle on heavy underdogs you bet to cover the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

Where Minnesota has a significant edge is in the turnover battle. The Golden Gophers are ranked 28th in turnovers per game and 42nd in opponents’ turnovers per game while the Fighting Illini are 221st in turnovers and 243rd in opponents’ turnovers per game.

If Minnesota can win the turnover battle, it’ll control the tempo and cash tickets for its backers. Also, 80% of the money is on Illinois but the line hasn’t budged from the opening number, according to Pregame.com.

The House is OK with everyone taking Illinois so let’s BET MINNESOTA +8 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

I only “LEAN” UNDER 146 (-105) because the teams’ 2020 O/U trends heavily point to the Over. Minnesota-Illinois each play at an above-average pace and have a combined 9-3 O/U record on the year.

Several of the same players were in this game last season and the 59-51 Illinois win fell way short of the projected total of 135. We’ll get a little better shooting in this game but I think these teams get after it defensively.

Minnesota at Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Minnesota Golden Gophers at Illinois Fighting Illini sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers (0-2 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) visit the Illinois Fighting Illini (0-2, 0-2), which have been ravaged by COVID-19 protocols. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Minnesota-Illinois college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Minnesota at Illinois: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 9 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Minnesota -271 (bet $271 to win $100) | Illinois +220 (bet $100 to win $220)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Minnesota -7 (-115) | Illinois +7 (-106)
  • Over/Under: 61.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Minnesota at Illinois: Three things to know

  1. The Illini have been hit hard by COVID-19, missing 14 players in last week’s 31-24 home loss to Purdue due to positive tests and contact tracing. They covered as 9.5-point underdogs thanks to a 14-0 fourth-quarter. At least 12 players, including QB Brandon Peters and PK James McCourt, are expected to miss Saturday’s contest. Fourth-string QB Coran Taylor could make his first career start – he played the majority of the Purdue game (273 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions) after third-stringer Matt Robinson injured his ankle on the Illini’s first possession. Robinson’s status is unknown as of Thursday.
  2. Minnesota blew a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter of a 45-44 overtime loss at Maryland last week. The Gophers gave up 675 total yards, including 281 on the ground, to the Terps. A bright note for Minnesota was RB Mohamed Ibrahim, who ran for 207 yards (on 41 carries) and tied the school record with 4 rushing touchdowns. The Gophers will be without defensive coordinator Joe Rossi Saturday as he tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.
  3. The Gophers have won four of the their last five vs. the Illini, including a 40-17 rout in Minneapolis last year. The Illini are 19-15-1 at home in the series, including a 55-31 victory in 2018.

Minnesota at Illinois: Odds, predictions, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Minnesota 35, Illinois 24

Money line (ML)

AVOID. The Gophers (-271) should win against the undermanned Illini, but the price is a bit high. Plus, it’s definitely not worth the risk considering how Minnesota fell apart in the final quarter last week.

Against the spread (ATS)

MINNESOTA -7 (-115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. With Illinois short-handed, Minnesota should be able to build a decent lead and will be determined and focused to shut the door in the final quarter following last week’s debacle. The Gophers defense is a concern, but the Illini will struggle to run the ball with the personnel they have available.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 61.5 (-110). This number is too high for these two. Minnesota has enough offensive weapons to score in the 30’s, but Illinois doesn’t.
