On this day: Celtic Stephon Marbury born; Joe Johnson traded to Suns

On this day in Celtics history, former point guard Stephon Marbury was born, and forward Joe Johnson was dealt to the Phoenix Suns.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, iconic former Celtic point guard Stephon Marbury was born in 1977 in Brooklyn, New York, New York.

Marbury joined the Celtics as the last stop of his NBA career. He signed with the storied franchise after falling out with the coach of the New York Knicks at that time — Mike D’Antoni — once he had successfully negotiated a buyout with the Knicks. Unfortunately for Starbury (as he was sometimes called for a nickname) his time in Boston with the Celtics did not go especially well as the Georgia Tech product did not mesh well with his new club.

His sole season in Boston — by far the worst of his NBA career — paled compared to his career averages of 19.3 points and 7.6 assists per game (Marbury put up only 3.8 points and 3.3 assists per game with the Celtics in 2008-09).

On this day: Boston Celtic guards Isaiah Thomas, Milt Palacio born

On this day in Celtics history: point guards Isaiah Thomas and Milt Palacio were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Celtics fan favorite floor general Isaiah Jamar Thomas — also known as IT — was born in Tacoma, Washington back in 1989. The Tacoma native would play his NCAA ball with the University of Washington Huskies, picked up with the 60th and final pick of the 2011 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings.

IT would play stints there and with the Phoenix Suns before being traded to the Celtics for Marcus Thornton and draft assets as part of a major three-team deal. The King in the Fourth (as Thomas was often called as a nickname due to his late-game scoring prowess) would quickly become an offensive force with the Celtics.

He would play three seasons with Boston between 2015 and 2017.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 9

Today’s installment focuses on the 15 players who wore No. 9 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

18 ex-NBA players charged in sweeping insurance fraud case, including 7 former Celtics

Several Celtics alumni are part of the group so charged, including Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Tony Allen.

A total of 18 former NBA players have been charged in a sweeping insurance fraud case involving the league’s health and welfare benefit plan, with a number of former Boston Celtics among them according to NBC News’ Tom Winter.

A further report from the Associated Press today relates that the players “engaged in a widespread scheme to defraud the plan by submitting false and fraudulent claims to get reimbursed for medical and dental expenses that were never actually incurred” between 2017 and 2020, with the defendants allegedly charging $3.9 million in non-existent services that they received $2.5 million of themselves.

Among the defendants named by Winter with ties to the Celtics include Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Tony Allen, Sebastian Telfair, Will Bynum, Darius Miles, Terrence Williams, and Milt Palacio.

According to the Associated Press, it remains unclear whether all have been arrested on the above charges.

Long Island Nets assistant coach Milt Palacio ‘fine’ after false report of death

Long Island Nets assistant coach and former NBA journeyman Milt Palacio is ‘fine’ despite erroneous reports of his death.

Former NBA journeyman and current Long Island Nets assistant coach Milt Palacio is alive and well according to New York Daily News reporter Mollie Walker.

The 41-year-old Colorado State product was erroneously reported to have been killed after being struck by a Honda Civic in Toronto November 21st, but Palacio’s status among the living was confirmed after the New York Post contacted the team on Friday.

The former Ram is evidently injury-free, with a Nets public relations coordinator relating they “have spoken to Milt, and he is fine.”

Palacio, perhaps best known for an iconic game-winner that propelled his Boston Celtics to a victory over the then-New Jersey Nets in December 2000, would eventually come full circle to join the now-Brooklyn Nets G League affiliate as an assistant coach in 2018.

After a long career playing for six NBA teams including Boston, the then-Vancouver Grizzlies, and Phoenix Suns between 1999 and 2006, the Belizean-American would go on to have a seven-year career playing overseas, transitioning into coaching in 2013 as the University of Idaho’s director of player development.

Palacio is now entering into his second season as an associate coach with the Long Island Nets, and, to the delight of fans and friends alike, appears to be both alive and in good health despite reports to the contrary.
