Jaren Jackson Jr., Miles Bridges both named to ESPN’s Top NBA Players 25 and Under list

ESPN recently dropped their Top NBA Players 25 and under rankings, and two former Michigan State teammates made the cut. Jaren Jackson Jr. and Miles Bridges were both featured in the rankings after both players had big years for their respective clubs. Here is what ESPN had to say about the two Spartans.

No. 25 Jaren Jackson Jr.:

Fully healthy after 2020 knee surgery, Jackson has grown into the defensive force the Grizzlies imagined when they drafted him No. 4 overall in 2018. Jackson has built a strong case for Defensive Player of the Year with his ability to both protect the rim — he led the league in blocks per game and block rate — and chase smaller opponents on the perimeter at power forward.

The next step for Jackson is recapturing the offensive success he enjoyed in 2019-20, when he hit a career-high 39% of his 3s before dropping to 32% this season.

No. 16 Miles Bridges

Bridges has taken a leap in his development, posting career highs in points (plus-7.6 from a year ago with nine 30-point games), rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. After the All-Star break, Bridges averaged 21.2 points on 52% shooting and 40% from deep.

Per ESPN Stats & Information research, he is one of five players averaging 20 points, 50% field goal percentage and 40% 3-point percentage since the break. (The other four players are Karl-Anthony Towns, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker.) Bridges is a restricted free agent in July.

Miles Bridges ranked No. 16 in ESPN’s 25 under 25 list

Bridges has exploded this season as a prime Most Improved candidate.

Hornets forward Miles Bridges has officially hit the next level in his young career as a potential future All-Star in this league.

In ESPN’s 25 under 25 ranking, Bridges joined teammate LaMelo Ball on the list this year, debuting at No. 16 on the list after not being ranked last year.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks spoke on Bridges’ development in his fourth season.

“Bridges has taken a leap in his development, posting career highs in points (plus-7.6 from a year ago with nine 30-point games), rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. After the All-Star break, Bridges averaged 21.2 points on 52% shooting and 40% from deep.”

In 80 games this season, Bridges averaged 20.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, all career-high’s. Bridges’ improvement in attacking the basket off the dribble and becoming a true three-level scorer has propelled Charlotte’s offense to one of the top in the league.

“Per ESPN Stats & Information research, he is one of five players averaging 20 points, 50% field goal percentage and 40% 3-point percentage since the break. (The other four players are Karl-Anthony Towns, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker.) Bridges is a restricted free agent in July.”

For the Hornets to make it out of the play-in tournament and into the postseason, Charlotte will need a big game from Bridges in Atlanta on Wednesday night.

Nets vs. Hornets game preview: How to watch, TV channel, start time

The Brooklyn Nets will face off against the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. Here’s everything to know ahead of this matchup:

The Brooklyn Nets will take on the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch all the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

Coming off a 110-95 win over the Miami Heat, the Nets will look to continue their momentum. Brooklyn held a 37-point lead at one point during the game. The Hornets defeated the Utah Jazz 107-101 in their last outing with Miles Bridges (26), Terry Rozier (25), and LaMelo Ball (21) combining for 72 points on the night.

The big storyline for this game will be Kyrie Irving making his home debut after recent changes to the New York City vaccine mandate. He is now eligible to play at Barclays Center and will be doing so for the first time since Game 2 of the 2021 Eastern Conference Semifinals. Having Irving back in the lineup at home will be a great showcase of what the NBA has missed.

“It’s a long time coming,” Durant said of Irving making his home debut on Sunday. “It’s an exciting time for Brooklyn Nets fans and New York fans to see one of our own back on the floor at home. It means a lot to our team, happy to have him back, and look forward to finishing the season strong.”

There are legitimate potential playoff implications with this matchup for the Hornets and Nets. Brooklyn holds a one-game lead over Charlotte in the Eastern Conference standings entering this game.

OKC Thunder player grades: Thunder blow 18-point lead, SGA & Bazley combine for 57 points in 134-116 loss to Hornets

SGA continues to play like arguably the best scorer in the league since the ASB in a blowout loss to the Hornets.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will continue to search for its first win in nearly two weeks as the team falls to the Charlotte Hornets, 134-116.

After a hot start in the first quarter where the team scored 41 points and led by as much as 18 points, the Hornets were able to take control for the rest of the game and outscore the Thunder 105-75 in the remaining three quarters. This game continues the trend of the Thunder’s once top defense regressing to one of the worst in the league due to injuries.

Entering this game, since the All-Star break, the Thunder have the 29th ranked defensive rating at 121.3. Just for comparison reasons, the Thunder had the eighth-best defensive rating at 108.6 before the All-Star break.

The Hornets were able to swing this game their way with its outside shooting, as they shot 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hornets entered the game as a top-five team in the league in terms of three-pointers made per game.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to play like one of the best players in the league recently as he collected his eighth game of at least 30 points in his last 10 contests. Darius Bazley also followed up a career night with another 20-point performance.

For the Hornets, Terry Rozier led the team in scoring with 30 points. Miles Bridges also finished with 27 points and LaMelo Ball had an 21 point and seven assists performance.

Overall, the defensive slippage in recent weeks was not more evident than it was in this game as the Hornets were able to score 102 points in three quarters with ease. The Thunder simply do not have the offensive firepower to keep up with that type of scoring currently — even with Gilgeous-Alexander being a nuclear scorer in recent weeks. Let’ take a look at player grades.

Miles Bridges on LaMelo: ‘As soon as he got here, the culture changed’

Miles Bridges discusses how the arrival of LaMelo Ball changed the culture in Charlotte.

LaMelo Ball is one of one.

Once he was selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2020 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets, things were bound to change in the Queen City.

Ball’s teammate Miles Bridges recently appeared on fellow Michigan State Spartan Draymond Green’s podcast, ‘The Draymond Green Podcast’, and spoke about the impact that LaMelo has brought to the Hornets.

“As soon as he got here, the culture changed,” Bridges said. “He’s always had a lot of fans since he was like 13 or 14 so he’s always had that swag to him and he brought that to us.”

Green compared how Ball’s swag has impacted the Hornets to how Steph Curry’s ‘looseness’ has rubbed off on the Warriors and affected how they play the game, to which Bridges agreed.

“That’s how we’ve been playing. Our practices have been different. Our energy within the crowd during the game is different,” Bridges said. “You can tell whenever he steps on the floor, they just love him and he feeds off that.”
