Panthers waive FB Mikey Daniel, leaving one roster spot open

Carolina just announced that fullback Mikey Daniel has been waived, which opens up one spot on the 90-man roster.

The Carolina Panthers have been busy churning the bottom of their roster throughout training camp. In the last week, they’ve added half a dozen new players. Today, they made another change.

Carolina just announced that fullback Mikey Daniel has been waived, which opens up one spot on the 90-man roster.

The undrafted rookie Mason Stokke was also released recently, which leaves former Cowboys back Rod Smith as the only player on the team with experience at fullback.

For the last several years this role was filled by Alex Armah, but he signed with the division rival New Orleans Saints in free agency. It’s possible the Panthers will be de-emphasizing this position in Year 2 of the Joe Brady era.

Panthers sign safety to replace J.T. Ibe, release FB Mason Stokke

Today, Carolina has brought in another safety to fill Ibe’s former spot.

The Panthers lost a few players at yesterday’s practice. Running back Darius Clark left on a cart, wide receiver Keith Kirkwood got a concussion and safety J.T. Ibe was waived for giving it to him.

Today, Carolina has brought in another safety to fill Ibe’s former spot: Doug Middleton has signed with the team. Middleton played his college ball at Appalachian State, then went undrafted and signed with the Jets. He spent three years there plus some time with the Titans, Jaguars and Dolphins.

The Panthers also announced that they have waived rookie fullback Mason Stokke. His reps will likely got to Mikey Daniel, who has previously played fullback for the Falcons.

Panthers bring on DL Frank Herron once again

Panthers bring on DL Frank Herron once again

Just 16 days after the team waived him to make room for a pair of undrafted rookies, the Carolina Panthers are bringing back defensive lineman Frank Herron.

The 26-year-old initially jumped on with the Panthers a little over a month ago, signing alongside running back Mikey Daniel and nose tackle P.J. Johnson in mid-April. Herron, again, would then be waived on May 10 as Carolina brought in linebacker Paddy Fisher and running back Spencer Brown.

The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder has played in seven NFL games, each with the Detroit Lions. He recorded 11 combined tackles (one for a loss) between the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Defensive lineman Kendall Donnerson, as also announced by the team, was waived to now make way for Herron.

Well, that workout must’ve went rather nicely, huh?

Just hours after David Newton of ESPN reported that the Carolina Panthers were working out fullback Mikey Daniel on Tuesday, a deal between the two sides has been reached. The signing of the South Dakota State Jackrabbit and 2020 training camp body for the Atlanta Falcons was first noted by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

With the departure of Alex Armah to the New Orleans Saints, Daniel will officially be the lone fullback on the Carolina roster. The six-foot, 235-pounder averaged 4.7 per carry and scored 30 touchdowns over his four-year collegiate career.

The team also, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic, added defensive linemen Frank Herron and P.J. Johnson on Tuesday evening.

Herron, 6-foot-4 and 305 pounds, entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2018. The LSU Tiger, after additional stints in Seattle, Miami, Tennessee and Detroit, has played in seven games between 2019 and 2020 for the Lions.

Johnson, another former Lion, was a seventh-round pick by Detroit in 2019. The 6-foot-4, 335-pounder has bounced around to the Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle and Arizona as well, having yet to log a regular-season snap.

Panthers working out former Falcons FB Mikey Daniel today

According to a report by David Newton at ESPN, today the team is working out former Atlanta fullback/running back Mikey Daniel, who played his college football at South Dakota State.

The Panthers have lost a couple of backfield contributors to division rivals this offseason. Fullback Alex Armah has signed with the Saints, while backup running back Mike Davis joined the Falcons on a two-year, $5.5 million deal.

Carolina might be looking to return the favor. According to a report by David Newton at ESPN, today the team is working out former Atlanta fullback/running back Mikey Daniel, who played his college football at South Dakota State.

Daniel (six-foot, 235 pounds) racked up 30 touchdowns from scrimage with the Jackrabbits and then went undrafted. He spent training camp with the Falcons but did not appear in a game in 2020.

Christian McCaffrey’s spot is guaranteed at the top of the team’s depth chart at running back, so if Daniel does wind up signing with the Panthers, he’ll be competing for snaps with the likes of Reggie Bonnafon, Rodney Smith, Trenton Cannon and the recently-signed Darius Clark.

Chargers had pre-draft meeting with South Dakota State FB Mikey Daniel

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to find Derek Watt’s replacement in the upcoming draft.

The Chargers lost fullback Derek Watt earlier this offseason after he signed with the Steelers.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that the team plans to have a fullback to fill the void, adding, “We have a couple of prospects for that.”

Among the crop is former South Dakota State FB Mikey Daniel.

According to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo, Los Angeles had a virtual pre-draft meeting with Daniel.

Daniel is one of the top fullbacks in this year’s draft class. Not only is he reliable as a pass-blocker, but he can run the ball and catch the ball well out of the backfield.

Daniel, the 6-foot and 235 pounder finished his colleigate career with 1,728 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on 364 carries.

In 2017 and 2019, Daniel earned Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Honor Roll.

Daniel currently projects as a Day 3 option or priority free agent.
