Benton and Herbig were already named to the 2022 Bronko Nagurski Watch List after combining for 89 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in 2021. Although they are not at the top of the big board yet, another year as the leaders of Wisconsin’s defense could skyrocket their draft stock.

This analyst believes a talented second-year Clemson safety could have a breakout 2022 campaign.

PFF lead draft analyst Mike Renner has tabbed the Tigers’ Andrew Mukuba among the breakout defensive back candidates going into the upcoming college football season.

A conensus four-star prospect according to the major recruiting services coming out of LBJ Early College High School in Austin, Texas, Mukuba made an immediate impact for the Tigers in 2021, earning Freshman All-American honors from nearly every outlet as well as being named the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and a third-team All-ACC selection.

Mukuba enters his sophomore season in 2022 credited with 54 tackles (two for loss), a sack, nine pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 576 snaps over 13 games (10 starts).

The 6-foot, 185-pounder is ranked No. 5 on PFF’s preseason list of the top 25 safeties entering the 2022 college football season.

Wisconsin OLB Nick Herbig makes PFF’s Top 10 LBs for 2023 NFL draft

PFF writer Mike Renner predicts Wisconsin OLB Nick Herbig as an early top 10 linebacker for the 2023 NFL draft:

On Tuesday morning, Pro Football Focus released writer Mike Renner’s early top 10 ranking of linebackers ahead of the 2023 NFL draft, and Wisconsin OLB Nick Herbig made the list at No. 6.

Herbig is coming off an outstanding 2021 season where he led the Badgers in sacks and is already predicted by Phil Steele as a first-team All-American for next season. The Wisconsin edge rusher is not the only Big Ten player in the top 10, as Iowa linebackers Jack Campbell and Jestin Jacobs landed at No. 3 and No. 9.

After such a phenomenal year last year; hopefully, Herbig can keep the momentum moving into this season and take over the Wisconsin defense.

Myles Murphy had a strong sophomore season in 2021, when he earned second-team All-ACC honors after leading Clemson in sacks (seven) and tackles for loss (14).

The standout defensive end has been as advertised since signing with the Tigers as a consensus five-star prospect in 2020. With an ideal 6-foot-5, 275-pound frame that could also be used on the interior at the next level, Murphy has been highly productive while posting 94 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and five forced fumbles over the first two years of his career.

However, despite what he’s already proven able to accomplish on the defensive front, this draft analyst believes Murphy is only “scratching the surface” of his potential and has a good chance to hear his name called really early in next year’s draft with another big campaign for the Tigers off the edge this season.

PFF Lead Draft Analyst Mike Renner is very high on Murphy and tabs him as a college edge defender to watch in 2023.

“He’s only scratching the surface and could easily play his way into being a top-10 draft pick in 2023,” opined Renner.

The Sporting News ranks Murphy as the top end prospect for next year, while ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Todd McShay’s way-too-early 2023 Mock Draft (subscription required) has Murphy going to the Miami Dolphins with the 16th overall pick.

Chargers claim pair of players in best draft slots since 2006

The Los Angeles Chargers landed two of the best secondary defenders in the first-round, dating back to 2006.

Pro Football Focus’ Mike Renner recently did an exercise where he listed the best players selected at each slot in the first-round, dating back to the 2006 NFL draft.

The Chargers were represented by two players, one current and former.

The two that made the list were safety Derwin James, who was taken No. 17 overall in the 2018 draft. The other was cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who was selected No. 19 overall in the 2006 draft.

Here’s what Renner had to say about James:

James is quite easily the best 17th overall pick of the past 15 years … when healthy. That last part has all too unfortunately been difficult to come by in his three years. He earned an 88.3 overall grade as a rookie and an 82.3 overall grade in 2019 after returning from injury in Week 13 before tearing his ACL and missing all of 2020.

James, the versatile defender, has 139 tackles, three interceptions, 3.5 sacks and 14 passes defensed. The results show that when James is on the field then there’s a greater chance of success, as the team made the playoffs in the year that he was healthy and missed the past two when he was injured.

As for Cromartie, here is what Renner said:

Cromartie was very much an up-and-down player in his career, but his peaks with the Chargers were special. His 2007 season saw him pick off 10 passes and allow a mere 53.5% completion percentage.

Cromartie spent four of his 11 seasons with the Bolts, appearing in 64 games, accumulating 165 tackles, 15 interceptions, 42 passes defended and two fumble recoveries. He made one of his four Pro-Bowl appearance with the Chargers and was also named once as a member of the All-Pro First Team.

Kyle Pitts is one of the most exciting players in the SEC, per PFF

With SEC football set to get underway in less than 24 hours, members of the media have been giving their opinions on matchups and players.

With Southeastern Conference football set to get underway in less than 24 hours, members of the media have been giving their opinions on various matchups and players who will be featured this Saturday.

PFF’s lead draft analyst Mike Renner released his list of the most exciting players in the SEC on Friday via Twitter, with one prominent Florida Gator at the head of the pack. Junior tight end Kyle Pitts, who has earned quite a few lofty expectations coming into his 2020 campaign, was the first mention on Renner’s roster of five players from the around the league — all of whom were underclassmen.

Also mentioned was the Alabama Crimson Tide’s junior wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, Ole Miss Rebels’ sophomore quarterback John Rhys-Plumlee, LSU Tigers’ sophomore quarterback Derek Stingley Jr. and Missouri Tigers’ junior linebacker Nick Bolton.

Two of the names mentioned will be facing off against each other on Saturday when Pitts’ Gators travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on Rhys-Plumlee and his Rebels, kicking off both schools’ 10-game, SEC-only schedules.

PFF’s Mike Renner: ‘Cam Newton was never a top five QB’

Opinions are opinions but facts are facts.

The same publication that has Auburn’s Bo Nix as the 95th best quarterback in college football for the 2020 season is back at it with what I assume are horrible attempts at riling up the Tigers fan base.

Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus is making a statement on Cam Newton that … well … just take a listen.

“Maybe the most talented quarterback in the NFL over the past decade, Cam Newton, in terms of what he can do from the arm talent perspective, from a legs perspective, just who he is, he was never a top five, maybe that one MVP where he was top five quarterback, but he was not a top five quarterback over the past decade because talent only gets you so far.”

Okay, so much to break down here including the fact that, you know, Newton won the 2015 NFL MVP while taking a team that was short on talent at the wide receiver position to the Super Bowl and the fact Renner sort of contradicts himself by saying Cam was, in fact, a top five quarterback during that season.

Let’s just take a quick look at some of the NFL records that Newton achieved over the past decade.

Yesterday afternoon, Pro Football Focus tweeted out two interesting Jonathan Taylor fantasy football predictions for next season. Both show how analysts have really high expectations for the Salem N.J. native in his rookie season.

Mike Renner predicted that Taylor will finish in the top three in rushing yards this season. This is an extremely bold prediction for Taylor, especially when he will share snaps next season with a Pro Bowl-caliber running back in Marlon Mack. I have no doubt that Jonathan Taylor can accomplish this feat, but a crowded backfield may make obtaining this statistic impossible.

In Ian Haritz’s Top 300 Fantasy Football Ranking, Jonathan Taylor came in as the 19th ranked running back. Haritz even predicted that Taylor would finish significantly behind rookie Kansas City Chiefs’ running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire that was ranked as the fifth overall running back. Despite not being in the top 15 for running backs, Taylor is ranked in a fair spot for sharing snaps with two others in the Indianapolis Colts backfield.

I think Jonathan Taylor can finish the season significantly above average fantasy-wise, so my prediction for his season falls somewhere in between that of Mike Renner and Ian Haritz. Even though he is playing in a crowded backfield, the Indianapolis Colts are the best team to be playing for as a running back in the NFL because of their elite offensive line and a run-heavy offensive scheme.
