Broncos make first of several roster moves on deck this week

The Broncos are adding Andrew Farmer to their practice squad. More moves are on deck this week.

The Denver Broncos are signing pass rusher Andrew Farmer to their practice squad, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis first reported on Tuesday. This marks the first of several roster moves on deck for the Broncos this week.

Denver will have to create a spot for Farmer on the practice squad, either by releasing another player or by promoting somebody from the practice squad to the active roster this week.

After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey for “about a month” to a sprained MCL, the Broncos seem likely to place him on injured reserve. That would rule McGlinchey out for four games and open up a spot on the 53-man roster.

Denver has three offensive linemen on the 17-player practice squad. If they’re going to promote one of them to the active roster, Will Sherman would presumably be the top candidate. Sherman getting called up from the practice squad could create a spot for Farmer.

The potential McGlinchey and Sherman moves are just speculation at this point. Only the Farmer addition has been confirmed thus far. We’ll find out how the Broncos create a spot for Farmer in the next 48 hours.

5 offensive tackles Broncos could sign to replace Mike McGlinchey

After losing Mike McGlinchey to an MCL injury, the Broncos should consider these free agent offensive tackles.

After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey for “about a month” to a sprained MCL, the Denver Broncos must now find a replacement.

Matt Peart might be the in-house favorite to start while McGlinchey is sidelined, but the Broncos would be wise to at least bring in more depth at the position. Alex Palczewski filled in for McGlinchey for two snaps on Sunday, but those were the first two snaps of his career, and rookie Frank Crum was inactive for each of the team’s first two games this season.

Here’s a quick list of five outside players Denver could consider bringing in for workouts this week.

Free agent offensive tackles

1. Billy Turner: The 32-year-old vet had two previous stints with the Broncos and has experience at both tackle and guard.

2. Cam Fleming: Another ex-Denver tackle, the 32-year-old Fleming filled in for one game in 2023 and started 15 games in 2022.

3. D.J. Humphries: A 30-year-old former first-round pick who started 98 games for the Arizona Cardinals from 2016-2023, including 16 games last season.

4. Donovan Smith: He started 12 games for the Kansas City Chiefs last season. The 31-year-old former second-round pick won Super Bowls with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chiefs.

5. David Bakhtiari: The decorated 32-year-old veteran has struggled with injuries, playing just one game last season and one game in 2021. He was healthy for 11 games in 2022. If healthy, Bakhtiari would be an intriguing option for the Broncos.

Denver will likely bring in tackles for tryouts in the coming days. If McGlinchey is placed on injured reserve, that would free up a roster spot for a potential signing this week.

Report: Broncos OT Mike McGlinchey out ‘about a month’ with MCL sprain

The Broncos will be without right tackle Mike McGlinchey for the next month, according to a report from NFL Network.

Denver Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey is expected to miss “about a month” after spraining his MCL during a 13-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Garafolo noted that evaluations are ongoing so the timeline “is somewhat fluid,” but the sprain is “significant,” so McGlinchey will miss time. If the Broncos believe the tackle is set to miss a month, they could place him on injured reserve to save a spot on the active roster. Players on IR are eligible to return after four games.

McGlinchey, 29, signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract with Denver in 2023. He started 16 games last fall and the first two games of this season before suffering the MCL injury.

After previously losing top backup swing guard/tackle Quinn Bailey to a season-ending ankle injury, the top remaining backup tackle on the depth chart is Matt Peart, although it was Alex Palczewski who filled in for two snaps on Sunday. The Broncos also have and Frank Crum on the active roster and Will Sherman on the practice squad.

Denver wanted to re-sign Demontrey Jacobs to the practice squad in August, but he was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots after roster cuts.

The list of free agent offensive tackles available includes Cam Fleming, David Bakhtiari, Jason Peters and ex-Bronco Billy Turner. For now, Peart is probably the next man up in Denver.

Steelers matchups to watch: Week 2 (DEN) – T.J. Watt vs. Mike McGlinchey

T.J. Watt will be looking to wreck another game this week.

After a remarkable defensive effort in Week 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers star defensive player, T.J. Watt, will be a part of one of the matchups to watch this Sunday in Denver.  In Week 2, T.J. Watt will look to take on one of the Denver Broncos’ best players, right tackle Mike McGlinchey.

Mike McGlinchey, the former 2018 1st round pick out of Notre Dame, had a solid performance for the Denver Broncos.  McGlinchey, on 51 pass-blocking snaps, allowed only three hurries against the Seattle Seahawks defensive front, while allowing zero QB hits or sacks.

T.J. Watt was credited one sack on Sunday, but made key stops on running plays, and recovered an important fumble in the third quarter.  He also had two strip sacks taken away by penalties, one of which seemed like a completely botched call by the officials.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will head to Denver in Week 2 with hopes of strengthening their record to 2-0, and T.J. Watt’s role in beating McGlinchey will play a significant part in making it happen.  The Steelers and Broncos go head to head, September 15th, at 4:25 pm EST.

Mike McGlinchey loves having a Notre Dame running back in Denver

“I think he’s going to do great, just like all Notre Dame alums do at this level,” Mike McGlinchey said of new teammate Audric Estime.

Mike McGlinchey was a highly-touted offensive tackle coming out of Notre Dame in 2018. He was picked by the San Francisco 49ers ninth overall that year and went on to spend five years playing for the Niners.

After testing free agency, McGlinchey signed with the Denver Broncos last year and he had no teammates from Notre Dame on the roster in 2023. That changed this spring.

Denver used a fifth-round pick to draft Fighting Irish running back Audric Estime in April, and it’s fair to say McGlinchey is excited.

“I think he’s going to do great, just like all Notre Dame alums do at this level,” McGlinchey said in July. “He certainly knows how to tote the rock a little bit. That’s something we specialize in South Bend, Indiana. The same way as Bo [Nix], he came in [and] he’s so mature. I was so excited as soon as he was picked. I got so many texts from people back at school [saying], ‘You’re going to love this kid.’ I’ve obviously watched him every Saturday for the last six or four years, however long he was at school.

“He’s a really talented player. He’s got great vision, he’s got the biggest arms I think I’ve ever seen on a running back and he runs hard. He did that for Notre Dame. I don’t think I would get any more credit by George [Paton] or Sean [Payton] if I said I block harder for a Notre Dame running back, but it certainly feels good to have more in the building because we think we’re the best in the world.”

Estime, 20, rushed for 2,261 and 29 touchdowns in his final two touchdowns at Notre Dame. He now joins a Broncos backfield that features Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin. It’s unclear how big of a role Estime will have early in the season, but McGlinchey is confident the RB will be ready when called upon this fall.

Broncos name team captains, and rookie QB Bo Nix makes history

Bo Nix is the Broncos’ first rookie to be named a team captain since Hall of Fame RB Floyd Little in 1967.

The Denver Broncos have named their six team captains for the 2024 NFL season, coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday.

On offense, wide receiver Courtland Sutton, guard Quinn Meinerz and rookie quarterback Bo Nix got the nod. On defense, cornerback Pat Surtain and inside linebacker Alex Singleton were named captains. Kicker Wil Lutz will serve as the special teams captain. The captains were elected by teammates this week.

Nix makes history as the team’s first rookie team captain since Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Floyd Little in 1967. This will also mark the first time Payton has had a rookie captain on his team.

Denver’s team captains last year were Sutton, quarterback Russell Wilson, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, safeties Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson and punter Riley Dixon. Wilson, Simmons and Jackson are no longer on the team.

Two years ago, the team’s captains were Wilson, Sutton, Simmons, outside linebacker Bradley Chubb and kicker Brandon McManus. Of the team’s 2022 team captains, Sutton is the only one who remains on the team.

This fall will mark Sutton’s fourth straight season as a team captain.

The Broncos are preparing for a Week 1 showdown with the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 8. Denver is considered a 5.5-point road undergoing going into Sunday’s game in Seattle.

Broncos fans will like Mike McGlinchey’s report on Bo Nix

“The moment isn’t too big for him,” Mike McGlinchey said of Bo Nix. “He’s ready for it, and he’s ready to go attack it.”

Denver Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey has been full of praise for rookie quarterback Bo Nix this summer, and that trend continued last week.

“[T]he rapid improvement has been super impressive to me,” McGlinchey said of Nix’s progress. “From OTAs when he first got here in May to where he’s at now, he’s a different football player. It’s a great sense of who he is as a pro and who he is as a competitor to learn that fast and put himself in a position to lead our football team. Everybody is excited for him to do that.

“There have been so many examples of him showing composure and his collection in the huddle. His ability to stay calm no matter the situation out there. He was the same on the practice field as he was in the two games that we’ve lined up so far. That speaks to his composure as much as anything. The moment isn’t too big for him. He’s ready for it, and he’s ready to go attack it.”

Nix’s maturity and composure have been referenced by multiple teammates this offseason, and McGlinchey also praised Nix’s leadership style.

“I think he’s been great,” the lineman said. “Bo is a great dude. He’s a great guy to hang out with [and] a great guy to have a conversation with. I think he’s fit in unbelievably well, and he has come in and been authentically himself. I think that’s all you can ask for from him.

“For us, he doesn’t have to be somebody that he’s not just because he’s the quarterback of an NFL franchise. He’s a homegrown dude that really likes playing football and really likes being a teammate. That’s definitely shown through to the rest of us in the way that we appreciate his work so far.”

That’s about as positive of a report a rookie quarterback could receive from a seventh-year veteran and team captain. McGlinchey’s comments should have Broncos fans feeling excited about Nix going into the 2024 campaign.

Mike McGlinchey says Bo Nix has avoided mistake ‘probably every player makes’

“He has a very unique combination of humility and confidence that goes a long way for his position,” Mike McGlinchey said of Bo Nix.

The positive reviews for Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix continue to pour in both from defensive and offensive teammates. Broncos coach Sean Payton can’t hide his excitement for the QB, either. It’s easy to see why.

Nix, 24, entered the league as the most-experienced college quarterback ever with 61 career starts. Consequently, he is more mature and composed than a typical rookie quarterback. That’s according to teammates.

Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey added to the praise this week, noting that Nix has avoided a key mistake that happens to nearly every player in the NFL.

“Well certainly you see a guy that’s not afraid to compete,” McGlinchey said Wednesday. “I think that’s the biggest factor for him as he’s come into this camp. You could put yourself behind by playing hesitant. It’s certainly a mistake that probably every player makes at some point in his career and especially as a young guy. We haven’t seen any of that from Bo and that’s been a really, really cool thing to watch. Certainly, he’s going to keep building on that confidence too.

“I said it the other day, he has a very unique combination of humility and confidence that goes a long way for his position and certainly, as a rookie stepping in here with a lot of pressure on himself. He’s taken that [in] stride and there’s no fear of competition and there’s no fear of getting out there and going for it. That certainly has showed in the way that he’s progressed all of camp.”

Nix impressed in his NFL debut against the Indianapolis Colts last week and he is now set to start against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Based on all of the reports from training camp and Nix’s performance, the QB seems to be well on his way to winning the starting job in Denver.

Broncos roster series: No. 69, OT Mike McGlinchey

Entering his second year with the Broncos, right tackle Mike McGlinchey will look to bounce back after an underwhelming season last fall.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at eighth-year offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, No. 69.

Before the Broncos: McGlinchey (6-8, 315 pounds) entered the league as a first-round pick out of Notre Dame with the San Francisco 49ers in 2018. McGlinchey started all 16 games in his first season and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. The following year, McGlinchey missed four games due to injury.

McGlinchey started all 16 games again in 2020, but he missed half of the 2021 campaign with a torn quadriceps. In the final year of his contract with the 49ers, McGlinchey started all 17 games in 2022.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed McGlinchey to a five-year, $87.5 million contract last offseason. He started all but one game and allowed six sacks in 2023, according to Pro Football Focus.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. McGlinchey’s right tackle job is safe, in part because the Broncos would lose $39.1 million if he’s cut. The 29-year-old veteran enters his second year in Denver as a lock to make the team.

Broncos sign OT Matt Peart to 1-year contract

The Broncos are signing Matt Peart, a backup swing tackle who can provide cover on the offensive line.

The Denver Broncos are signing offensive tackle Matt Peart to a one-year contract, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Terms of the deal are not yet known.

Peart (6-7, 318 pounds) entered the league as a third-round pick out of UConn with the New York Giants in 2020. He dressed for 43 games over the last four years, earning seven starts.

Peart (26) started five games for the Giants in 2021. He was credited with allowing four sacks and was penalized three times in 421 snaps that season, according to Pro Football Focus. Peart served mostly as a backup from 2022-23.

Peart seems like a backup swing tackle candidate for the Broncos this year behind left tackle Garett Bolles and right tackle Mike McGlinchey. It remains to be seen if this means Denver won’t be re-signing backup swing tackle Cam Fleming, who remains a free agent.

We are tracking all of the team’s free agency moves on Broncos Wire.
