Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum recalls telling Coach K he was coming to Duke

Tatum opened up about that fateful day in his basketball career that would one day lead to him being drafted by the Celtics in 2017.

When Jayson Tatum took his visit to Duke, he knew right away that was the school for him. But the future Boston Celtics superstar recently recalled how coach Mike Krzyzewski reacted when the St. Louis native finally got up the courage to tell the leader of the Blue Devils that he had elected to take Duke up on its scholarship offer.

In an appearance on the “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” show, Tatum opened up about that fateful day in his basketball career that led to him being drafted by the Celtics in 2017 with the team’s third overall pick.

Tatum spoke on Coach K’s recruitment trip to his home in Missouri and a couple of times where the now-retired Hall of Fame head coach pushed some choice buttons to motivate the Celtics star.

If you ask Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum about his time playing at the NCAA level, you will undoubtedly get at least one story about former Duke coach Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey previews season at ACC media day

Excited about the Irish’s chances this year?

If you had written off Notre Dame before ACC play began last year, no one would have blamed you. After all, the program hadn’t been that good in a while, and the Irish didn’t exactly impress in their nonconference slate other than a win over ranked Kentucky. Then, longtime coach [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] proved he had a little magic left in him and guided the Irish to their first NCAA Tournament in five years. They even won a couple of games in the tournament and nearly made it out of the first weekend.

Now, Brey is focused on how to make the 2022-23 Irish even better. Here’s what he said at Wednesday’s ACC media day in Charlotte, North Carolina:

Duke eases Mike Krzyzewski into retirement with an adorable puppy he can coach at home

Too cute.

Now that Mike Krzyzewski is officially retired, he’ll have a lot more time on his hands at home.

The adjustment won’t likely be an easy one for someone who’s spent the last five decades coaching basketball. So new Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, along with the team Krzyzewski just coached to the Final Four, got him a little gift to make it easier.

At Duke’s annual awards banquet on Thursday, the team surprised Coach K on stage with the most adorable puppy, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Krzyzewski light up like this before. Fittingly, the pup is named Coach, and just look at him, he’s perfect.

With a new puppy around the house, Coach K won’t be short of an outlet to bark orders at in case of a relapse. But let’s be real, Coach is going to be the real head dog of the Krzyzewski household.

Carlos Boozer: “There’s a couple …

Carlos Boozer: “There’s a couple coaches in my life that really stick out for me personally. Obviously my dad put the ball in my hands. My high school coach, who’s also here, really helped my development. Coach K gave me the foundation of the pro that I would be moving forward. And coach Sloan gave me a chance to be a star. He talked to me a lot — we talked on the phone maybe three or four times before I even got here, before I signed the contract. And then when I got here, [we had a conversation] where he felt like there were certain things I could bring to the table that no one else on the team had. So for me, he really took my career from here to here. I wouldn’t be sitting here now if it wasn’t for coach Sloan.”

Twitter hizo muchas bromas:

Coach K seeks out UNC’s Armando Bacot postgame

Mike Krzyzewski found his way to North Carolina forward Armando Bacot following the Tar Heels victory on Saturday night to check on him after his injury.

After North Carolina’s win over Duke in the Final Four, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski made his way through the crowd of media to address Tar Heels standout forward Armando Bacot

Krzyzewski spoke to Bacot briefly and made it known that ‘you were my player of the year’ in the ACC after asking if his ankle was okay.

Bacot left briefly with four minutes remaining in the Tar Heels win on Saturday after stepping on the foot of teammate [autotag]Leaky Black[/autotag]. He was taken back to the locker room but returned shortly after.

Bacot played 33 minutes before fouling out, finishing with 11 points and 21 rebounds in UNC’s win — his 30th double-double of the season.

On the season, Bacot is averaging 16.3 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. He is also fifth in the NCAA and first in the ACC in rebound percentage at 22.8 percent.

The 6-foot-10 Bacot finished second in ACC Player of the Year voting behind Wake Forest guard Alondes Williams this year. He was a First-Team All-ACC selection, however.

After taking down Duke and Mike Krzyzewski, Hubert Davis has arrived for North Carolina

It’s been a dream first season for Davis.

When Hubert Davis was named the successor to Roy Williams last spring, most in Chapel Hill thought it was a perfect fit. As a former Tar Heel great turned assistant coach — who also had Williams’ formal blessing — it was a match made in basketball heaven. What could go wrong?

As it turns out, a lot!

By midseason of Davis’s first campaign, a 22-point blowout to unranked Wake Forest capped an uninspired 12-6 start. While still extremely early in his tenure, skepticism behind Davis’s coaching was growing in the background, and understandably so.

Did Williams make the right choice for a successor? Was Davis up to the task of leading such a prestigious program? Also, why is this a conversation being had mere months into his career? It’s funny how fast perception can flip on a dime.

Within a couple of months of their low point, Davis’s Tar Heels got to the Final Four and slew the dragon in the castle — the hated Mike Krzyzewski and Duke. For good, and during his all-important farewell tour. Yeah, I’d say Davis has arrived.

Here’s a nice little rundown of Davis’s achievements (with a Men’s National Title potentially on the way):

It’s true! Davis can claim an accomplishment Dean Smith and Williams could’ve only dreamed of. He beat Darth (Mike) Krzyzewski in his last Duke home game and in his last game in the Final Four, en route to a National Championship Game berth. In his first year as head coach.

Suffice to say: There should be no more questions about Davis’s coaching aptitude. And if North Carolina wins the title against Kansas (who are three and a half-point favorites on Monday night, according to Tipico Sportsbook), he might even be untouchable.

Time will only tell what else the 51-year-old Davis will achieve while he roams the Carolina courtside. But if this was only Year 1, you have to think Tar Heel Nation will be enamored with their head coach for years to come.

Coach K’s career ended so predictably and not enough of us saw it coming

Maybe we should’ve seen this coming.

Not many foresaw it, but the way Mike Krzyzewski’s career ended Saturday was the way it was always supposed to end — the only acceptable alternate to the storybook finish he was carving out.

If Duke couldn’t win a title in Coach K’s final game, the only other fitting ending was for him to lose to North Carolina. And the basketball gods delivered big time with Duke-UNC in the Final Four, a national semifinal that was more than improbable.

As it turned out, UNC’s first win over K this season was the lift it needed to chart this path. Had Duke just taken care of the Tar Heels as 11.5-point favorites in Krzyzewki’s final game at Cameron Indoor, North Carolina maybe doesn’t make it this far. Instead, Duke lit the fuse to a bomb that blew up in its own hand. This time as 4.5-point favorites, the Blue Devils were upset by the Tar Heels to send Coach K home for good.

After how they looked in previous rounds, many of us were riding Duke’s moneyline to the end — 60% of bettors at Tipico Sportsbook picked Duke to beat UNC. But maybe we should’ve seen this coming. It’s a poetic, even if bitter ending to a legendary career. No one had better perspective on how it ended than the man himself.

“I’ll be fine,” Krzyzewski said after the game. “I’ve been blessed to be in the arena. And when you’re in the arena, you’re either going to come out feeling great or you’re going to feel agony, but you always will feel great about being in the arena. And I’m sure that’s the thing, when I look back, that I’ll miss. I won’t be in the arena anymore. But, damn, I was in the arena for a long time. And these kids made my last time in the arena an amazing one.”

In 42 years as Duke’s head coach, Krzyzewski has a 1,129-308 record, 13 ACC regular-season titles, 15 ACC tourney titles, 36 NCAA tourney trips, 101 tourney wins, 13 Final Fours and five national titles. He’s widely regarded as one of, if not the greatest coach ever. And through it all, UNC has been there to make sure none of it went unchallenged.

The Tar Heels’ win pulled them to an even 50-50 against Duke in the Coach K-era (Krzyzewski didn’t coach two losses in 1994-95). They also have the same number of titles since he took over in 1980. And just when it looked like he might break that tie, they forced the first NCAA tournament meeting between these teams and sent him into retirement a game early.

If any team was going to send Coach K off into retirement, it was always going to be them.
