Everyone has an opinion on new Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo
Head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are hiring Mike Bobo as offensive coordinator. Bobo served as an offensive analyst for Georgia in 2022.
Bobo has a long history with Georgia. He was the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2014. Bobo coached quarterbacks from 2001 to 2006 during the Mark Richt era in Athens.
Bobo played quarterback at Georgia from 1993 to 1997. Bobo, Kirby Smart, and Will Muschamp played at Georgia during the 1990s.
Bobo replaces Todd Monken, who is returning to the NFL
Head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs did not take long to hire another offensive coordinator after Todd Monken accepted the Ravens’ offensive coordinator role.
Mike Bobo served as an offensive analyst for Georgia in 2022. Now, Georgia is hiring Bobo as its offensive coordinator. Bobo was the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2014. Bobo coached quarterbacks from 2001 to 2006 during the Mark Richt era in Athens.
A lot of things have changed since Bobo left as Georgia’s offensive coordinator in 2014. Kirby Smart and Todd Monken helped Georgia win back-to-back national championships and have recruited at an elite level.
The Georgia offensive line and defense are playing at a much higher level than they were during Bobo’s final few seasons as offensive coordinator at Georgia.
Bobo was the head coach at Colorado State from 2015-2019. Bobo served as the offensive coordinator at South Carolina in 2020 under Will Muschamp and in the same role for Auburn for the 2021 season. Bobo has significant experience coaching in the SEC.
Bobo helped develop quarterbacks David Greene, Matthew Stafford and Aaron Murray. Now, he will be tasked with determining Stetson Bennett’s successor as Georgia’s starting quarterback.
Georgia has a core of coaches that are former Georgia players. Kirby Smart played in Athens from 1995 to 1998. Mike Bobo played quarterback at Georgia from 1993 to 1997. Will Muschamp, who played at Georgia from 1991 to 1994, is the Bulldogs’ co-defensive coordinator.
Seth Emerson of The Athletic first reported Bobo’s hiring:
Mike Bobo will be Georgia's offensive coordinator again, replacing Todd Monken, multiple sources tell The Athletic.
The Georgia Bulldogs recently hired former Oregon assistant coach Bryan McClendon and former Auburn offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
The Georgia Bulldogs hired former Oregon assistant coach Bryan McClendon to replace Cortez Hankton as wide receivers coach. McClendon will serve as the passing game coordinator for Kirby Smart and is returning to Athens after previously coaching under Mark Richt.
McClendon, a Georgia alumnus, elected to come home three weeks after accepting a job as co-offensive coordinator with the Miami Hurricanes. McClendon will be paid $700,000 per year. He was previously paid $515,000 at Oregon, per the USA Today’s salary survey.
The LSU Tigers are paying Cortez Hankton $900,000 per year as their wide receiver coach. He was previously paid $550,000 per year at Georgia.
Former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is back in Athens. Bobo will serve as an analyst and will be paid $100,000 per year. Bobo is in a similar situation to former South Carolina coach Will Muschamp.
Bobo will be coaching on the same team as his son, a class of 2022 signee. Additionally, Bobo is owed $1.3 million per year from Auburn for the next two years. Bobo is a former Georgia football quarterback who coached under Mark Richt.
The Georgia Bulldogs have added a commitment from three-star offensive tackle recruit Drew Bobo
The Georgia Bulldogs have added a commitment from offensive tackle recruit Drew Bobo. Bobo is a member of the class of 2022.
Bobo plays high school football for Auburn High School in Auburn, Alabama. Bobo flipped his commitment from the Auburn Tigers to the Georgia Bulldogs on Dec. 13.
Drew Bobo is ranked as a three-star offensive tackle recruit. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman is ranked as the No. 55 offensive tackle in the country. Bobo is rated as the No. 637 recruit in the class of 2020.
Drew Bobo announced his commitment to Georgia via Twitter:
Drew Bobo is the son of Mike Bobo, who coached with Auburn in 2021, but was fired following Auburn’s loss to Alabama. Mike Bobo is a former Georgia quarterback and served as UGA’s offensive coordinator and quarterback coach throughout the Mark Richt era.
Bobo has scholarship offers from Auburn, UGA, Virginia, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, and more.
The three-star offensive tackle is Kirby Smart and Georgia’s 25th commitment in the class of 2022. Offensive line coach Matt Luke has commitments from four offensive linemen in the class of 2022.
Clemons has had a dramatic and unpredictable recruitment, but Auburn may be able to reenter the picture for the talented wide receiver.
Auburn was at one point seen as the leader for the 4-star wide receiver but then Auburn fired his primary recruiter and position coach Cornelius Williams and Oregon ramped up their recruitment of the Portland, Oregon native.
This led to the Ducks becoming the leader and Auburn seemingly falling out of the race. However, Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal is heavily rumored to be heading to Miami to become the head coach of the Hurricanes. Also, Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead has accepted the Akron head coaching job. This has opened the door for Auburn and the Tigers will look to capitalize on the turmoil in Oregon.
It will be very important for Auburn to visit Clemons and it is worth mentioning the Tigers have yet to hire an offensive coordinator after moving on from Mike Boob, something that could impact Clemons.
Landing Clemons would be a major boost for Auburn’s recruiting class, Clemons is rated as the 22nd best receiver and 147th best recruit overall in the 247Sports composite ranking. He would become Auburn’s highest-ranked recruit. Auburn’s recruiting class currently ranks 12th in the SEC and 33rd in the country and has commitments from 4-star athlete Omari Kelly and 3-star receiver Jay Fair.
Auburn is currently in the market for a new offensive coordinator after firing Mike Bobo.
There has been some speculation as to whether or not Harsin wants to make an outside hire, or an inside hire promoting someone within the program. That man in the program could be receivers coach Eric Kiesau.
“It would surprise me if Eric Kiesau got the job,” Hokanson said. “Because if Auburn thought he was good enough to be their OC to win now, then why did you bring hm on initially not even as the receivers coach? I would be weary of that move. Not saying it couldn’t happen, but it would surprise me. Harsin and his staff are simultaneously trying to win right now and build right now… there are some good OC’s out there right now that are better than Mike Bobo and better than Eric Kiesau. I wouldn’t anticiapte a quick hire right now either. A quick move to Kiesau would surprise me.”
I doubt Auburn makes a hire within the next couple of days, but I’m sure the Tigers will have an answer a couple of weeks before their bowl game rolls around.
There have been several names tossed around, but specifically Eric Kiesau, the current wide receivers coach at Auburn. It would not surprise me if Harsin elected to make an in-house hire, or if he went out to get someone he’s very familiar with.
Here are five ways the offense can improve with a new offensive coordinator.
Mike Bobo has officially been let go by Auburn. Now, the offense faces several questions heading into the offseason.
First, obviously, the Tigers need to find a new offensive coordinator. Who that may be is still undecided. Second, there are questions about the efficiencies and the decisions that will be made for the offense in the future. Schematically, what changes for the Tigers? Is it similar to what Bobo ran? What does the team need to do to improve? Which players benefit the most from the upcoming changes?
Here are five ways Auburn’s offense can improve under their new coordinator.
Auburn has fired offensive coordinator Mike Bobo after a pathetic showing from his offense in the month of November. Auburn has scored a combined 15 second-half points in the last five games.
Bobo has bumped up Auburn’s averages by a small margin as opposed to 2020 (29.6 points per game in 2021 compared to 25.1 points per game in 2020), but the way the Tigers have fallen apart over this past month has been inexcusable. The offense has cost Auburn greatly in games where they should have won or had a legitimate chance to win.
Here are five candidates to replace former Auburn offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
Here are the losers from Auburn’s disappointing loss to the Gamecocks.
I’m legitimately stunned.
Auburn (6-5) has now lost three straight, losing to South Carolina 21-17 in Columbia tonight. The Tigers were not necessarily outplayed, but if feels like Auburn outreached themselves. A lot of moments where Auburn shot themselves in the foot that led to a South Carolina victory.
Props to South Carolina though. The Gamecocks (6-5) played their hearts out, and I’m happy for Shane Beamer for getting the program to a bowl in his first season.
There should be some major changes made after this season ends. Not calling for Harsin’s job, but there need to be some adjustments (something the coordinators don’t know about).
