Report: College football to approve three significant rule changes for 2024 season

Agree with these rule changes?

College football is set to approve three significant rule changes for the 2024 season, according to a report from Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger.

The three changes are expected to come after meetings this week regarding the future of the sport. The news coincides with speculation about the future of the College Football Playoff and the general structure of the sport.

One notable recent change to the game is the elimination of stopping the clock while the chains are reset on first downs. That, plus some of the reported upcoming changes reflects a longer trend of the college game working to be more like the NFL product.

Again, that’s what’s happening again this offseason. Here are the rule changes expected to be approved by college football leaders for the 2024 season:

Which Big Ten football team has the toughest conference schedule in 2024?

Wisconsin has one of the conference’s toughest schedules in 2024

The Big Ten football season is going to look different in 2024.

New additions USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington bring more formidable opponents to the table. But more importantly, gone is the East-West Division model, replaced by a format of conference standings similar to that in basketball.

There are some blockbuster out-of-conference games to monitor before the conference slate begins this fall. Wisconsin hosts Alabama, USC faces LSU and Michigan meets Texas. Then begins the conference schedule, which is filled with big-time matchups every weekend.

So far this offseason we’ve already ranked all 18 programs in the Big Ten, ranked the 18 head coaches, predicted each Big Ten team’s 2024 record and checked in on the Las Vegas win totals for each team in the conference.

Now it’s time to take a look at each team’s 2024 conference schedule:

So, to rank each program’s 2024 Big Ten schedule as we preview the 2024 season we’ve taken each team’s ESPN SP+ rating and found numerical values for every game, and therefore every schedule.

The equation is simple. Every opponent’s SP+ rating is added together to find a Total Opponent Score. That large number is then divided by the nine conference games to find the Average Opponent Score — a number that can then be compared to the SP+ leaderboard to find the average quality of team each schedule contains.

Here is how each program’s 2024 Big Ten Conference schedule ranks, from easiest to most challenging:

College Football: Initial SP+ Top 25 Released for 2024

What will the 12-team field look like in 2024?

“Way too early” college football projections and rankings have been out since before the national championship even got underway back in January and we tend to soak all of them up.

Along those lines, Bill Connelly released his first SP+ projections on Valentine’s Day.  His SP+ projections are used as a predictive measure, not as a traditional top 25 rankings method.

SP+ brings in returning production, recruiting and transfer portal successes, and recent team success (or lack thereof) into account to determine its rankings.

So what did Connelly’s rankings say about Notre Dame and the rest of the top 25 in mid-February?

Below is how the top 25 checked in and included are overall, offense, defense, and special teams rankings on SP+.

Michigan basketball is still somehow sticking with head coach Juwan Howard

Michigan basketball is still somehow sticking with head coach Juwan Howard

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel spoke with reporters earlier this week and expressed another vote of confidence in head basketball coach Juwan Howard.

Michigan is 8-17 this season, including an abysmal 3-11 in Big Ten play. The program was in the Elite Eight under Howard just three years ago, but it has since fallen to 19-15 in 2021-22, to 18-16 in 2022-23, then to this year’s disaster.

More specifically, the Wolverines only have two wins dating back to December 19. The program is 2-12 in that span, only with home victories against Ohio State and Wisconsin.

Despite the free-fall, Manuel seems to be sticking with Howard:

“It would be fair to say I have not really thought about any changes in our men’s basketball program at this time,” Manuel said to reporters this week. “It’s one of those things that — I guess I can’t say it any clearer; I want to support Juwan to be successful and have not given any moment or thought of anything about changes at this time. And so my support is of him, of our student-athletes, and our staff.”

I was taught years ago that a coaching job or hire is best judged by the thoughts of the program’s rivals — where if fans of the rival want a coach to stay in place, that likely means a move should be made. That’s how Badgers fans should view Howard, separate from his incident with Greg Gard from two years ago. The longer he stays in place at Michigan, the better it is for the rest of the Big Ten.

Things have gotten really bad for the Wolverines. One should wonder how bad it needs to get before change is necessary.
