Former Wisconsin defensive line coach resigns from position at Michigan

Former Wisconsin defensive line coach Greg Scruggs has resigned from his position as defensive line coach at Michigan, according to several reports.

This news comes after Scruggs was recently arrested for OWI — just one month after reports surfaced of him leaving Wisconsin for the same position on Sherrone Moore’s staff and eight days after Michigan officially announced his hire.

A recent report from the Michigan Insider noted that Scruggs was at twice the legal BAC limit at the time of his arrest on the morning of March 16. Michigan suspended Scruggs indefinitely later that day. He has now reportedly resigned five days later.

The former NFL defensive line coach spent just 2023 with the Badgers, though previously worked for four years under Luke Fickell at Cincinnati — two as director of player development and two as defensive line coach.

Giants GM Joe Schoen will scout Michigan Pro Day

New York Giants GM Joe Schoen will be on hand at the Michigan Pro Day on Friday where QB J.J. McCarthy is expected to participate.

Editor’s note: Joe Schoen ultimately did not attend Michigan’s Pro Day despite earlier reports.

The New York Giants are in the middle of a crucial offseason with the 2024 NFL draft right around the corner.

Several recent reports have linked the Giants to quarterbacks at the top of the draft, which would likely be a trade-up scenario for general manager Joe Schoen.

One of the quarterbacks the Giants have been most connected to is Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy. With Michigan’s Pro Day set for Friday, Schoen will be in attendance.

In addition to the Pro Day, the Giants will also host McCarthy for a top-30 visit.

While Schoen may eye others at Michigan’s Pro Day, the links between McCarthy and the Giants will have everyone’s attention.

McCarthy has been climbing draft boards and could still be available after the top three teams pick — all of whom are expected to be quarterbacks.

However, with the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers not eyeing a quarterback, the Giants could be jumped by another team trading up to take McCarthy at pick No. 4 or No. 5.

Schoen needs to be prepared for all options entering the draft which is why he has explored both trade-up and trade-down scenarios.

On this day: Wisconsin clinches second Big Ten Tournament title

On this day: Wisconsin clinches second Big Ten Tournament title

Captained by big man Brian Butch, Trevon Hughes and Marcus Landry, Wisconsin clinched its second Big Ten Tournament win in school history on March 16, 2008.

Held at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Badgers entered the tournament with a 16-2 conference mark and No. 6 overall in the 2008 AP Poll, four spots higher than their last tournament win in 2004.

Five Badgers averaged eight or more points per game throughout the regular season. NBA veterans John Leuer and Greg Stiemsma, who combined to average 6.4 points per appearance, came off the bench for Bo Ryan’s squad.

As the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, Wisconsin throttled the University of Michigan 51-34 in its quarterfinal game. With three Big Ten All-Defensive Team members scattered throughout the rotation, UW held Michigan to 20% from the field and 18 points per half. Junior forward Joe Krabbenhoft led all scorers with 12 points.

UW followed its explosive opening performance with a two-tally win against Michigan. Harris, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, scored eight of his 21 points in the final 2:56 of action. Wilkinson, Wisconsin’s most dependable big man, dropped 20 and corralled nine boards.

In its following contest, the Badgers orchestrated a 12-point comeback in the second half to steal a win from Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans. Michael Flowers, an excellent two-way guard, nailed a game-winning layup with 28 ticks to spare before the final buzzer.

The Badgers advanced to the championship game and plowed through the tournament’s No. 10 seed, the University of Illinois, by 13 points.

With the win, Wisconsin captured its second Big Ten Tournament victory in program history and automatically clinched a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Junior Marcus Landry was named the Big Ten Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Former Saints OL coach Doug Marrone has a new college coaching job

Former Saints offensive line coach Doug Marrone has a new job working under Bill O’Brien at Boston College:

It didn’t take too long for Doug Marrone to land on his feet — he’s returned to the college level after being hired by Boston College as their new senior analyst, where he’ll work under head coach Bill O’Brien, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He’ll be focusing on football strategy and research.

Marrone was let go along with most of the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coaching staff in February. Before he arrived for his second stint with the team (he was also Sean Payton’s offensive coordinator back in 2006), Marrone worked at Alabama and Syracuse in-between other stops in the NFL, so he knows the college game well. He and O’Brien coached together at Alabama in 2021.

He isn’t the only former Saints offensive line coach working at the collegiate level. Dan Roushar held the position for a long time and is still in New Orleans coaching at Tulane. Their predecessor Bret Ingalls is a coach at Michigan. The Saints’ current offensive line has fallen on hard times, but it’s always been a well-coached unit respected around the league. Hopefully incoming coaches John Benton, Rick Dennison, and Klint Kubiak can get it back on track.

New USC running back coach Anthony Jones Jr. knows how to beat Michigan

Anthony Jones’ TCU team rushed for 263 yards in a 51-point explosion versus Michigan in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl.

As you likely know by now, the USC Trojans hired TCU Horned Frog running backs coach Anthony Jones Jr. to the same position. Jones worked with TCU for the last two seasons. One obvious point on the resume which stands out about Jones: He was part of a coaching staff which defeated Jim Harbaugh and Michigan in a College Football Playoff semifinal. With USC moving to the Big Ten, being able to beat Michigan is a real plus for any coach Lincoln Riley brings aboard.

Jones’ 2023 team at TCU was ranked No. 11 in the nation in total offense (466.7), led by Emani Bailey, who was No. 20 in the nation in rushing yards (1,209) and No. 14 in rushing yards per game (100.8).

In 2022, Jones worked side-by-side with former TCU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and helped to coach the Horned Frogs to the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The Frogs scored 51 points on Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl, with lead running back Emari Demercado rushing for 150 yards on just 17 carries. TCU ran for 263 yards against Michigan’s defense. You think that won’t get USC fans excited when they face Michigan in September of 2024?

Prior to his two-year stint at TCU, Jones was the running backs coach at Memphis, where he worked for four seasons and developed NFL running backs such as Kenneth Gainwell, Antonio Gibson, Darrell Henderson Jr. and Tony Pollard.

Ex-Giant Kevin Wilkins joins Wink Martindale at Michigan

Former New York Giants assistant Kevin Wilkins is joining defensive coordinator Wink Martindale at Michigan as a defensive analyst.

Former New York Giants defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins will be joining the staff of the National Champion Michigan Wolverines as an off-field assistant this season.

Wilkins will be working once again under defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who was hired by first-year head coach Sherrone Moore to be the team’s defensive coordinator.

Wilkins was fired by the Giants after the 2023 season along with his brother, Drew, in a bloodbath that culminated in Martindale’s departure.

“Wilkins is still a good football coach and hiring him as an analyst is a huge boon for the Wolverines,” writes Chris Peterson of GBMWolverine.com.

“He’s got nine years of NFL experience and knows the defensive scheme like the back of his hand. The addition should also make Martindale more comfortable since none of the position coaches were really his guys.”

Drew Wilkins recently joined head coach Jerod Mayo’s staff in New England as the new outside linebackers coach.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 65, Michigan RB Blake Corum

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Michigan running back Blake Corum.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers need to start thinking about the long-term outlook of their running back room. Aaron Jones is entering the final year of his contract and will turn 30 in December, while AJ Dillon is set to hit free agency.

A player they could target in the 2024 NFL Draft to pair with Jones and potentially be his long-term replacement is Blake Corum. The Michigan running back checks in at No. 65 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

The Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland, Corum rushed for two touchdowns in six games during his first season at Ann Arbor. The following season, Corum rushed for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns. He added one receiving touchdown.

In 2022, Corum rushed for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns, with one receiving touchdown. This past season, Corum rushed for 1,254 yards and 27 touchdowns, with one receiving touchdown, as he helped the Wolverines bring home a National Championship.

“He’s just so good at all the little things that really matter,” Luke Easterling of Athlon Sports said. “Patience, vision, contact balance, instincts, intelligence, toughness. He excels between the tackles and in space because he knows what’s happening around him, and knows how to set himself up for success.”

Corum has fancy feet and can string moves together without gearing down. He has outstanding vision and is a patient runner who has an innate ability to sense lanes opening up. The Michigan running back makes sharp, decisive cuts and is explosive in short areas. Once he clears the hole he is able to hit a second gear to create chunk plays. In 2022, Corum had 22 runs of 15-plus yards.

“He shows a great understanding of what’s happening in front of him, and his eyes are quick to find the right crease and explode through it,” Easterling said. “He’s great at setting up blocks and evading contact, and vision is a huge part of that.”

Corum is a compact running back with good contact balance. He runs low and keeps his legs driving through contact. According to Pro Football Focus, Corum racked up 624 yards after contact this past season. He has a nose for the end zone and finished his career as Michigan’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (58). If he gets a carry inside the five-yard line he won’t be denied.

“He’s got such a compact frame, and a low center of gravity,” Easterling said.”Combine that with the aforementioned contact balance, and you’ve got a recipe for a guy who can churn out the tough yards.”

Corum finished his career as a Wolverine with 56 receptions for 411 yards and three touchdowns. He’s not a running back that a team will line up in the slot and run an expansive route tree, however, he has reliable hands to be effective on swing passes and in the screen game.

“He may not be a mismatch guy who can win with elite athleticism, but all the traits that make him a great runner also make him really effective with the ball in his hands when he gets in space as a receiver,” Easterling said. “He’s great in the screen game because again, he can rely on all those runner traits, and it makes him a great checkdown guy, too.”

Fit with the Packers

The Packers need to start thinking about life after Jones. Even if Jones winds up being a lifetime Packer, he’s entering the back-nine of his career and will turn 30 in December.

Corum can create yards for himself with his contact balance and competitive toughness. He has outstanding vision, dynamic feet and runs with good tempo. While he didn’t have a ton of production in the passing game, the Michigan running back checks a lot of boxes.

“He’s just too good at all the little things, and all the things that are most important when it comes to being an effective running back at the next level,” Easterling said. “He can stay on the field for all three downs, and he sets a physical tone for the ground game, which every team wants.”

A year removed from suffering a season-ending leg injury, Corum put together a monster 2023-2024 season to help the Wolverines win a National Championship. Corum is a compact running back who runs with energy and patience. Part of making life easier on Jordan Love is to have an effective rushing attack. Adding Corum would give Green Bay’s young offense another way to attack opposing teams.

New Michigan head coach shares what Chargers fans can expect from Jim Harbaugh

Michigan’s new head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his support for Jim Harbaugh and shared what Bolts fans should expect from him.

During an appearance on NFL Network, Michigan’s new head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his support for Jim Harbaugh and shared what Chargers fans should expect from him.

“First of all, an impeccable, great human being, great man, high character, high values,” Moore said. “But you’re gonna have a tough, physical, fast, relentless football team that will play through the echo of the whistle and give you everything they got every game and nothing less.

“They will play with high standards, they will play with discipline and they do everything that you guys want. And I look forward to watching Coach Harbaugh and all the staff kick butt at the next level.”

Harbaugh has made it clear that the Chargers will play physical football next season through hard work and resilience.

The new head coach of the Chargers means business and those are no empty words from Sherrone on the former Michigan head coach. Harbaugh is famous for a reason—he’s successful.

If his resume isn’t enough, it’s evident that his personnel support everything he does.
