The 5 best Big Ten games to watch in Week 4

Big Ten football has plenty of enticing matchups to follow in Week 4.

The college football season is officially one month in as Week 4 commences this weekend. Big Ten football has been arguably the most interesting conference on the field, and that won’t change following this weekend.

16 of the 18 Big Ten programs are in action Week 4, with the Oregon Ducks and Wisconsin Badgers on a bye.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Virginia Tech Hokies

Saturday, September 21 at 3:30 p.m. EST

Rutgers is coming off a bye, and hope to score an upset win at one of the most difficult venues in college football.

Regardless, it could be good eating for RB Kyle Monangai against the Hokie run defense. Virginia Tech have allowed 190.3 rushing yards per game (21st most in FBS).

That’s against Old Dominion, Marshall, and Vanderbilt.

It would not be surprising to see the Tech defense sell out to slow Monangai.

Michigan State Spartans at Boston College Eagles

Saturday, September 21 at 8:00 p.m. EST

Sparty fans want MSU to get noticed? A big win on the road against a team that has one loss to a top 10 team in college football is a tough task. The Eagles have the win over Florida State, but that dub looks like less of an achievement every week that passes.

Michigan State’s defense could plant a flag as a defense to truly fear with a strong performance.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Minnesota Golden Gophers

Saturday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m. EST

The number six defense in yards allowed per game in the Big Ten heads to the number three defensive unit for football under the lights.

The Hawkeye defense is only allowing 13.7 points per game, but a shutout to open their season brings their per game average to 20.5. Minnesota is in a similar boat as they come off of back-to-back shutout wins.

Illinois Fighting Illini at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Friday, September 20 at 8:00 p.m. EST

If Illinois can keep QB Luke Altmeyer upright and targeting his dynamic wide receiver duo, then they have a chance to win.

As good as the Illini secondary is, Cornhusker QB Dylan Raiola could be that much better, especially without a pass rush to rattle him.

USC Trojans at Michigan Wolverines

The Big House hosts one of the biggest games this weekend. Wolverines junior QB Alex Orji will make his first career start in what could be a CFP Playoff elimination game against the Trojans.

Orji has seven college passing attempts.

Notre Dame in its blowout win comes close to record they set in 1908

This is an interesting record the Irish almost achieved

Notre Dame football hit more than a few milestones in its blowout victory over Purdue, 66-7.

During the game, the Irish scored four touchdowns on the ground, matching a number they haven’t hit since 2000 against USC. They also handed the Boilermakers their worst defeat in school history, topping the previous high of 56 points.

There was another impressive stat that Notre Dame accounted for on Saturday according to ESPN, they scored the most points following a loss since 1908. It’s quirky that the record was set by the Irish, as they defeated Chicago Physicians & Surgions 88-0 following a loss to Michigan. It’s safe to say the quality of opponent was on a different level this Saturday.

It’s goes to show all of us that Notre Dame isn’t going to mail it in this season, and still have plenty to play for.

The good, the bad, and the ugly for Big Ten football in Week 2

Michigan got waxed by Texas, Oregon and Penn State narrowly escaped with wins, while Nebraska and Illinois shined for the Big Ten in Week 2.

The Big Ten conference has left fans with a lot to talk about after two official weeks are in the books. Week 2 had enough options to pick from for the good, bad, and ugly with 16 teams in play.

The Good

The Illinois Fighting Illini got revenge against the Kansas Jayhawks by winning the back end of the home-and-home series, 23-17.

The Illini defense picked off Jayhawks QB Jalon Daniels three times, and the offense connected at opportune times. Illinois DBs Xavier and Miles Scott (no relation) collected the three takeaways, with Xavier returning one for a score.

Illinois could be 3-0 heading into a showdown with Nebraska Week 4.

Speaking of the Cornhuskers, they played a complete game in their 28-10 beatdown of the Colorado Buffaloes. Nebraska won the takeaway battle 2-0, and sacked Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders five times.

The Bad

Iowa Hawkeyes QB Cade McNamara turned back into a pumpkin in their Week 2 loss to the Iowa State Cyclones in the annual Cyhawk game. McNamara completed 45% of his passes for 99 yards.

Iowa QB play is back!

The Hawkeyes were outscored 20-6 in the second half.

The Oregon Ducks continue to have an identity crisis. They eked out a win against the Boise State Broncos, 37-34. The defense was gashed by Broncos RB Ashton Jeanty for 192 rushing yards and three TDs.

They’ll head to in-state rival Oregon State September 14.

The Ugly

The Michigan Wolverines were laughed out of the Big House by the Texas Longhorns. Michigan was outplayed in every phase of the game, and it is clear that it could be a long season for a team hoping to not show signs of a difficult transition.

The Penn State Nittany Lions escaped Week 2 with a win at home against the Bowling Green Falcons, 34-27.

The PSU passing games’ box score is just as odd as it looked in the game.

Longhorns defense makes early statement with second dominating effort

While Quinn Ewers and his new weapons have been able to score with ease, their defense has been just as good

Through the first two games of the Texas Longhorns’ season, their offense has seemed unstoppable. While Quinn Ewers and his new weapons have been able to score with ease, their defense has been just as good. In eight quarters, they have allowed 15 points.

After shutting out Colorado State in Week One, the Longhorns faced their first-ranked team on Saturday in Michigan. The Wolverines could only muster 286 yards of total offense and went 3-12 on third downs. Texas took advantage of their mistakes as they struggled to move the ball.

The Longhorns forced three turnovers, including two interceptions, giving them three on the season. Colin Simmons also recorded his first sack of the 2024 campaign. Texas had four tackles for a loss after recording six against Colorado State.

https://twitter.com/HookemHeadlines/status/1832525785346855315

While Texas was projected to beat Colorado State with ease, the defense showed they are not to be underestimated against a ranked team like Michigan. Heading into action this week, the Wolverines were ranked as the tenth-best team in the nation and had scored 30 points against Fresno State in Week One.

The emergence of an elite Texas defense would be key in a tough SEC conference. Their Opponents have gone 9-24 on third downs and only scored one touchdown. The Longhorns will need their sack totals to increase, but so far, they have caused enough pressure to disrupt offenses.

Although many factors have contributed to the Longhorns’ success, against Michigan, they won on first down, making life harder for the Wolverines.

“Defensively, we continued to win on first down, which put them in second and long and third and long,” Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian told the media after the game.”

Their next test will be on the 14th when they take on UTSA, which is off to a 1-1 start.

LOOK. Urban Meyer teaches class in Ann Arbor with ‘Beat Michigan’ shirt.

This has to make Buckeye Nation feel a certain way. #GoBucks

Some things never change, and one of those is the level of trolling in the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry.

Former OSU head coach Urban Meyer will forever be undefeated against Michigan, going 7-0 during his time in Columbus, and he’ll always be beloved in Columbus and hated in Ann Arbor because of it.

Never one to let a chance to rub his success at the expense of the Wolverines in their faces, Meyer did so again over the weekend. The Fox Big Noon Kickoff crew was in town for the matchup between Michigan and Texas, and Meyer went into a sports management class to teach a lesson, but did so in the lion’s den.

Meyer didn’t just show up in enemy territory, he did so with a ‘Beat Michigan’ t-shirt on. Watch, as Meyer strolls on campus and walks into the classroom to jeers and boos from Michigan students as he gets hands on with some teaching.

https://twitter.com/BNKonFOX/status/1832408139100254667

There’s no truth to the rumor that Meyer taught the students how to beat your arch rival year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year.

Social media reacts to Texas throttling Michigan at the Big House

Social media reacted to Texas coming into the Big House and knocking off the defending champion Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns torpedoed the Michigan Wolverines 31-12 in front of a packed Big House in Ann Arbor on Saturday. The defending National Champs were down 24-3 at the half.

Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers threw a TD to three different pass catchers, including TE Gunnar Helm (7/98/1). He also wasn’t sacked. The Texas defense limited the Wolverines to 284 yards on offense.

Michigan couldn’t move the ball on offense for the second straight week. QB Davis Warren threw two interceptions, giving him more picks (3) than touchdown passes (2).

The Wolverine run game stalled except for when Warren was on the go. If you remove his 8 rushes and 41 yards (5.1 yards per carry), the backfield averaged 2.6 ypc.

The college football universe was present and hitting on all cylinders for Longhorns-Wolverines. Check out some of the best, including from athletes checking out the game and wholly unserious users.

Some of the funniest came from accounts big and small.

The best aspect of such a big game and regardless of the outcome is experiencing it however you prefer. The last reaction is one that feels good.

Texas drubs Michigan in the Big House

Michigan proved no match for Texas despite being at home in Ann Arbor

Texas is an SEC powerhouse.

The Longhorns left no doubt about that on Saturday as they clobbered Michigan, 31-12, in Ann Arbor.

In the emphatic process, Texan ended Michigan’s 16-game winning streak overall and run of 23 consecutive victories at the Big House.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Longhorns dominated the first half en route to a 24-3 advantage.

Quinn Ewers was dazzling at QB for Texas. He threw three touchdown passes and for 246 yards.

The Longhorn defense throttled Davis Warren and the Wolverine offense. Michigan did not score a touchdown until there were less than two minutes to go in the game.

At least Matthew McConaughey was happy. One can be sure Derek Jeter was not thrilled.

Quinn Ewers, Texas shredding Michigan in Ann Arbor

Texas was off to a fast start on the road at Michigan

The Top 10 game in Ann Arbor is off to a lopsided start for the home team.

Quinn Ewers and Texas were having a field day on Saturday in the first half against Michigan.

The Longhorns led 24-3 at the half over the defending national champions.

Ewers was 18-of-26 for 203 yards and two touchdown passes.

Texas had 279 yards of total offense and ran 45 plays before the break.

WATCH: Quinn Ewers, Texas strike first against Michigan

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers threw a touchdown pass to tight end Gunnar Helm on the second drive of the game against Michigan.

The No. 3 ranked Texas Longhorns struck first against the No. 10 Michigan Wolverines at the Big House on Saturday afternoon, taking a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Quinn Ewers to tight end Gunnar Helm.

After the Longhorns first drive resulted in 51 yards gained and nothing to show for it, thanks to a missed 43-yard field goal attempt from Bert Auburn, Texas forced Michigan into a quick three-and-out and promptly marched 56 yards for the score.

It was the third career touchdown catch for Helm, the senior tight end who had 21 career catches coming into this matchup.

https://twitter.com/CFBONFOX/status/1832457854269153303

Ewers is looking to put together a Heisman Trophy caliber performance against the defending national champions, one week after tossing three touchdown passes against Colorado State.

So far so good for the transfer from Ohio State, who is already 9-12 with 106 yards early in the second quarter for the Longhorns.

The Cooper Manning and Texas Longhorns flag rumor taking over Ann Arbor, explained

What’s this now about Cooper Manning allegedly paying to fly a Longhorns flag in Ann Arbor?

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Have you seen some stuff about a Texas Longhorns flag flying at an Ann Arbor hotel? And you’re very confused about that whole thing? Don’t worry. We’re here to help.

There’s a perfectly big-time college football rumor spreading across the sport on Saturday as the No. 3 Texas Longhorns visit No. 10 Michigan in Ann Arbor that you may have heard about.

It appears a boutique hotel in Ann Arbor called The Graduate is flying a Texas Longhorns flag and plenty of people think Cooper Manning — the brother of Peyton and Eli and father of Texas’ backup Arch — is responsible.

Is the hotel really flying a Longhorns flag?

Actually, yes. This part of the rumor is true and we have photo evidence.

https://twitter.com/ChipBrown247/status/1832051792865079387

Ok, so why do people believe this Cooper Manning’s doing?

Well, because like most college football rumors, social media said it’s true.

The rumor started on Twitter and quickly jumped to Reddit.

https://twitter.com/rasberry_tr/status/1831388893889040816?s=46&t=cIQ_E6apMkKv3dtfLb129A

There’s also the fact Cooper Manning works for AJ Capital Partners, which founded the hotel chain and continues to remain involved after it was sold to Hilton.

That’s perfect fodder for a college football rumor

It sure is! And a lot of people were all too excited to buy in, including ESPN’s Pat McAfee.

Of course McAfee is involved…but how?

With ESPN’s College GameDay in Ann Arbor this week, McAfee brought up the rumor that Cooper was involved during an interview with Peyton Manning on Friday.

Peyton didn’t know anything about the rumor, but seemed to get a kick out of it.

https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1832105981150687711

McAfee brought it up again on College GameDay Saturday, but again there’s no confirmation Cooper is involved.

Are we sure The Graduate doesn’t fly every visiting team’s flag?

That’s a great question. We are most certainly not sure that flying the Texas flag is out of the norm.

In fact, Michigan fans on Reddit has been saying for days that the hotel typically flies the visiting team’s flag.

What is the hotel saying?

Reached by For The Win, The Graduate in Ann Arbor declined to comment, but you might be able to just file that under “all press is good press”.

We’ve reached out to The Graduate management and will update this story if we get a response.

Some politician is going to act like this rumor is completely true to try to seem cool and hip, aren’t they?

You already know it.
