Michigan State basketball F Malik Hall questionable vs Wisconsin

Malik Hall is questionable for MSU’s game against Wisconsin:

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo mentioned that Malik Hall was dealing with the flu and it has kept him out of action for this past weekend at practice. Now, ahead of the Spartans Tuesday night clash with Wisconsin, the team has released its availability report and it is Hall that is listed as questionable to play in the game.

Of note in the availability report, Jaxon Kohler is still out with his foot injury.

The Spartans and Badgers will tip off just past 7 p.m.

A huge weekend for Adam Nightingale and company as they continue to pursue a Big Ten championship.

Michigan State basketball gains gritty road victory against Wisconsin, 69-65

MSU went to the Kohl Center and got a gritty 69-65 win over Wisconsin on Tuesday:

Michigan State went on the road to Madison for a classic Big Ten matchup against the Wisconsin Badgers inside of the Kohl Center.

It wasn’t easy, and at times looked doubtful, but the Spartans were able to pull out a gritty victory on the road against the Badgers.

AJ Hoggard earned his stripes, scoring 6 points and picking up a huge assist down the stretch to complete the comeback for Michigan State.

Both Michigan State and Wisconsin showed up to play in the first half, trading blows and baskets. Neither team gained a lead more than two possessions.

Michigan State went into the half leading 33-31.

Majority of the second half did not go the Spartans way in Madison, finding themselves scratching and clawing to stay in the game, while a turnover problem that MSU has avoided this year came back to plague the team.

It all cumulated into a 59-54 Badger lead with 4:14 to go in the game. It was at this time the Spartans were ready to take the game back over.

Four straight Malik Hall points, followed by a Joey Hauser 3-pointer, gave the Spartans a 61-59 lead in the blink of an eye. From there, AJ Hoggard scored the next 6, all coming with the score tied.

The Spartans played strong defense in the final minute, not allowing a Wisconsin field goal, while making their free throws on the way to the 69-65 win.

Michigan State was led by Joey Hauser who scored 20 points. Tyson Walker had 13, Jaden Akins had 12 and Hoggard added 10. Mady Sissoko had a good day defensively grabbing 11 rebounds and Carson Cooper had 2 blocks and a steal to aid to the defensive efforts.

The Spartans will be back in action on Friday against Illinois in Champaign.

Michigan State football picks up Wisconsin cornerback transfer

MSU has landed Wisconsin CB transfer Semar Melvin

Michigan State has picked up their second Wisconsin transfer of the 2022-23 transfer portal cycle, adding CB Semar Melvin to the program. Melvin has spent the past four seasons with the Badgers after playing high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Melvin recorded 15 tackles and 3 pass defends in his career with the Badgers. He will be a great addition to the depth in Michigan State’s secondary going into the 2023 season.

MSU’s post-game comments after the tough loss at home against Wisconsin

See what Tom Izzo and some of the players had to say following a 70-62 loss at home to Wisconsin

Michigan State lost a pivotal game in the Big Ten championship race, at home, to the Wisconsin Badgers 70-62. The loss came from a very disappointing offensive effort by the Spartans. Michigan State never lead in the game, and while they brought the game within one possession on several occasions, never could get over the hump to secure a lead.

An abysmal game from start to finish, there is a lot to reflect on by both the coaching staff and the players.

The Spartans will look to bounce back this weekend in a home matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers.

Badgers guard Brad Davidson has been suspended for one game after committing a flagrant foul in the team’s recent loss to Iowa. Combine that with news that Kobe King is leaving the program and plans to transfer, bench players will have to step into roles they aren’t accustomed to since both were starters. The Badgers (12-9, 5-5) were unable to win on the road in Iowa, losing 68-62 on Monday. The team was led by D’Mitrik Trice, who had 16 points and nine rebounds, along with six assists.

After an embarrassing 29-point loss to Purdue just a few weeks ago, Michigan State (16-5, 8-2) has rebounded and gone 3-1 since then and is No. 1 in the Big Ten standings. All of the wins were by double digits. In Wednesday’s game against Northwestern, Michigan State demolished the Wildcats by a final score of 79-50. While the Spartans went into halftime up by 11 points, the second half is when the team really turned it on, outscoring Northwestern by 18 points. The team was led by Cassius Winston, who had 18 points, along with two other players that scored in double digits.
