Michigan State vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Spartans – particularly head coach Mel Tucker – have a strange mind grip over Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.

The Wolverines rolled through the Big Ten last year, beat Ohio State, blasted Iowa in the conference championship, and … lost to Michigan State.

The 2020 Spartan team was awful in a 2-5 season. It lost to Rutgers, couldn’t score against Indiana, and … beat Michigan.

The Spartans might have bailed out their season with the overtime win over Wisconsin two weeks ago – the passing game clicked – helped by two takeaways. They have to throw well and force mistakes, which wouldn’t be against the normal against that team from Ann Arbor.

How did they beat Michigan last year? Kenneth Walker went crazy, but the offense was balanced, the defense held up against the run, and the two takeaways helped.

Under Tucker, MSU has won its last eight games when coming up with multiple takeaways. Michigan has lost the ball two or more times twice this year, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan State is 0-4 this year when not forcing multiple takeaways. Michigan has only turned it over four times and haven’t given it up more than once against anyone.

Everyone but Wisconsin has been able to throw at will on the Spartan secondary, and Michigan will give it a shot. Of course the idea is to stop the running game first, but JJ McCarthy has been sharp – he threw for over 300 yards in the win over Indiana and hits over 70% of his passes – and then everything else bust through from there.

Michigan’s offensive line has been fantastic. It’s going to pound away on a Spartan defensive front that was beaten up by Minnesota and Ohio State, and gave up five yards per pop to Maryland.

What’s Going To Happen

Will this be another one of those Michigan State performances against Michigan that defies all logic and reason?

You don’t win the last two meetings and three of the last five against your rival without knowing how to troll, tweak, and control the situation.

The Michigan secondary can be thrown on, and it’s up Payton Thorne and the strong receiving corps to bomb away from the start and keep the pressure on, but can the Spartan D hold up?

Not really.

The Spartans will be hot early on the way to a first quarter lead. Michigan will sputter, cough, and make too many mistakes – penalties will be a problem – and then midway through the third quarter the O line will take over.

There won’t be the avalanche like the Wolverines came up with in the second half of the 41-17 win over Penn State, but they’ll grab the momentum with the ground game and MSU won’t be able to get it back.

Michigan State at Michigan odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks.

The Michigan Wolverines (13-9, 4-7 Big Ten) host the rival Michigan State Spartans (16-7, 8-4 Big Ten) at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor Saturday at 12 p.m. ET in a Big Ten Conference clash. We analyze the Michigan State-Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Michigan State at Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. The Spartans are on a two-game skid, losing at Wisconsin 64-63 last Saturday, and at home against Penn State by a 75-70 count Tuesday. They’re also just 3-4 straight up and against the spread across their past seven games.

2. The last time these teams met was Jan. 5 in East Lansing, and the Spartans took the Wolverines behind the shed, winning 87-69 to cover a nine-point number with the over (145) cashing.

3. Michigan ranks 166th in the nation with 68.9 points per game allowed, and they’re 175th with a 42.6 defensive field-goal percentage. F Jon Teske leads the way with 13.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.

Moneyline (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (-143) is looking for the series sweep, and the Spartans are not a bad play laying only a little bit on the road. While they’ve been in a bit of a tailspin lately, Michigan (+120) isn’t exactly killing it, either. Sparty is a much better team overall.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN STATE (-2, -115) has posted a 4-1 ATS mark in its past seven games following a non-cover. While Michigan (+2, -106) is 4-0 ATS in the past four as a home underdog, the Wolverines are just 1-3-1 ATS in the past five at home, 1-8-1 ATS in the past 10 against winning teams and 2-6-1 ATS in the past nine games overall. The Wolverines are also a dismal 0-5 ATS in the past five as an underdog.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 142.5 (-110) has been the rule for both sides lately, and neither is playing with very much consistency at the offensive end. The Under is 7-0-1 in Michigan State’s past eight games overall, and 3-0-1 in the past four on the road. The Under is 4-1 in Michigan’s past five overall, and 4-0 in its past four at Crisler Center. This won’t be a defensive slog, but it won’t be a track meet, either.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Michigan State lately?

The Mark Dantonio retirement helped take the focus off of the basketball team’s two-game losing streak and run of four losses in the last seven games. What’s been going wrong?

The offense has is struggling, the defense isn’t forcing enough mistakes, and the team has been flat. Even so, Michigan can’t rebound with the Spartans and its D forces fewer mistakes than MSU’s.

It’s not like the Wolverines are hot, either, losing six of their last nine games.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Michigan Will Win

Really, what’s been going wrong with Michigan State lately?

It didn’t show up in the first half against a mediocre Wisconsin team, there were way too many turnovers and mistakes in the loss to Penn State, and there were way too many fouls in both losses.

Michigan might have a slew of problems – it’s awful on the free-throw line – but it doesn’t commit a whole lot of fouls. At home, the hope has to be to get the offense going early, generate a slew of easy transition points off of mistakes, and keep on firing from three.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State will get its mojo back with its defense.

After two sloppy games and a rough few games, it’ll turn up the intensity, dominate on the boards, and will keep the Wolverines from getting comfortable from the outside.

The Spartans have had a few days off to rest up and hear all the negativity, and now they’ll be fine again.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Of course there’s pressure. The team just collapsed against Illinois and is on an ugly four-game losing streak. However … there’s no pressure compared to what’s on the Michigan side of the field. There aren’t any expectations right now for this Spartan team – it really can come into this with the “nobody believes in us” attitude.

Okay, so what is Michigan State doing right?

The offensive line is doing a good job at keeping the backfield relatively clean.

There isn’t enough happening for the running game, but the pass protection has been terrific, and teams aren’t able to make big plays behind the line. There really is enough offensive talent to do a whole lot more, and this is the game to start taking a few more chances.

The defensive side might have been ripped apart by the Ohio State and Wisconsin running games, but overall the run defense has been fantastic. Michigan might have found its rushing attack over the last few weeks, but it’s been inconsistent. This is the game for the Spartan defensive front to take control.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Michigan Will Win

The Michigan State passing game has become a major issue.

It went for over 250 yards against Illinois, but Brian Lewerke’s three interceptions were a big part of the loss. Before that, he failed to hit half of his passes in the losses to Penn State and Wisconsin, and he hasn’t connected on 60% of his throws in any of his last six games – all the Big Ten battles. This isn’t the week the passing game is going to get healthy.

The Wolverines have clamped down defensively ever since halftime against Penn State, the secondary is keeping the big plays to a minimum – it’s allowing fewer than six yards per attempt – and the run defense hasn’t allowed more than 130 yards since the blowout loss to Wisconsin six games ago.

The key will be to get up right away. This isn’t a Michigan State team that appears to be capable of making anything positive happen in key moments, and it’s not able to generate any sort of a big comeback.

After all the issues over the last month, Michigan State needs some semblance of positive momentum go its way. That’s going to be hard because …

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

This is a rested Michigan team that’s playing at a high level over the last ten quarters.

When it comes to Jim Harbaugh not being able to win a big game, this is certainly one of them. Michigan State might not be all that great, but this is one of those games you can’t lose if you’re the Spartan head man.

He won’t.

MSU will come out fired up, but the offense will stall too often early on to take advantage of anything positive.
