3 Takeaways from Michigan State basketball’s road win against Michigan

Check out 3 takeaways from Michigan State’s road win against Michigan

Michigan State took the 64 mile bus ride from East Lansing to Ann Arbor on Saturday night, completing the sweep over their in-state archrivals Michigan. The Spartans held the Wolverines scoreless over the final 7 minutes of the game en route to a 73-63 win as the Crisler Center was serenaded with “Go Green, Go White” chants from the Spartan faithful.

The win serves as a Q2 win for Michigan State, which still is helpful in further bolstering their NCAA Tournament resume.

Coming out of the rivalry sweep, let’s take a look at some of the takeaways from MSU’s big victory in Ann Arbor on Saturday:

Michigan State at Michigan odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Michigan State Spartans at Michigan Wolverines sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks.

The Michigan Wolverines (13-9, 4-7 Big Ten) host the rival Michigan State Spartans (16-7, 8-4 Big Ten) at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor Saturday at 12 p.m. ET in a Big Ten Conference clash. We analyze the Michigan State-Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Michigan State at Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. The Spartans are on a two-game skid, losing at Wisconsin 64-63 last Saturday, and at home against Penn State by a 75-70 count Tuesday. They’re also just 3-4 straight up and against the spread across their past seven games.

2. The last time these teams met was Jan. 5 in East Lansing, and the Spartans took the Wolverines behind the shed, winning 87-69 to cover a nine-point number with the over (145) cashing.

3. Michigan ranks 166th in the nation with 68.9 points per game allowed, and they’re 175th with a 42.6 defensive field-goal percentage. F Jon Teske leads the way with 13.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.

Prediction

Michigan State 71, Michigan 65

Moneyline (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (-143) is looking for the series sweep, and the Spartans are not a bad play laying only a little bit on the road. While they’ve been in a bit of a tailspin lately, Michigan (+120) isn’t exactly killing it, either. Sparty is a much better team overall.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN STATE (-2, -115) has posted a 4-1 ATS mark in its past seven games following a non-cover. While Michigan (+2, -106) is 4-0 ATS in the past four as a home underdog, the Wolverines are just 1-3-1 ATS in the past five at home, 1-8-1 ATS in the past 10 against winning teams and 2-6-1 ATS in the past nine games overall. The Wolverines are also a dismal 0-5 ATS in the past five as an underdog.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 142.5 (-110) has been the rule for both sides lately, and neither is playing with very much consistency at the offensive end. The Under is 7-0-1 in Michigan State’s past eight games overall, and 3-0-1 in the past four on the road. The Under is 4-1 in Michigan’s past five overall, and 4-0 in its past four at Crisler Center. This won’t be a defensive slog, but it won’t be a track meet, either.

Purdue at Michigan college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Purdue Boilermakers at Michigan Wolverines sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks.

The Purdue Boilermakers (9-6, 2-2 Big Ten) and Michigan Wolverines (10-4, 1-2 Big Ten) tip it off at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor at 7 p.m. ET Thursday. We analyze the Purdue-Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

The Wolverines are ranked 19th in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Purdue at Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. Like their rivals to the south in Ohio, the Wolverines are stumbling lately. They’re just 2-3 straight up and against the spread, including an ugly 87-69 smack in the mouth in East Lansing last time out on Jan. 5.

2. Purdue hasn’t exactly been lighting the world afire, either, as they are just 3-3 SU/2-4 ATS across the past six, and they managed just 37 total points in a 26-point loss at Illinois on Jan. 5.

3. The Wolverines rank 18th in the nation in field-goal percentage at 48.3, and they’re a respectable 37.5 percent from behind the 3-point arc, checking in 35th.

Prediction

Michigan 71, Purdue 62

Moneyline (ML)

Avoid the chalk on the Wolverines (-250) and play the spread instead in search of a great profit margin.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN (-5.5, -110) has burned me before, including its loss at Illinois earlier in the season when I was positive they’d roll the Illini. That was actually the start of their skid. They’re hosting a very marginal Purdue (+5.5, -110) side at home, and I fully expect Jon Teske, Zavier Simpson and company to come out on fire.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 128.5 (-110) seems super low considering Michigan throws down 78.3 points per game on average. It’s mainly because Purdue’s offense is awful, as the Boilermakers average just 68.2 PPG to rank 260th in the country. Defensively, they slow it down like Virginia, allowing 59.1 PPG to rank 12th in the nation. Still, I expect Michigan’s offense to make it happen and push it over the line.

Oregon at Michigan odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Oregon Ducks at Michigan Wolverines sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Michigan Wolverines (8-2, 1-1 Big Ten) host the Oregon Ducks (7-2, 0-0 Pac-12) battle at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor at 12:00 p.m. ET. We analyze the Oregon-Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Oregon at Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. The Wolverines look to bounce back after falling at Illinois last time out by a 71-62 score. After a 7-0 straight-up start the Wolverines are 1-2 SU and against the spread in their past three games.

2. Oregon enters play on a 6-2 SU/7-1 ATS run across the past eight contests. The Over is 6-1-1 during the span.

3. The Ducks rank 18th in the country in 3-point percentage (67.4), and they’re 34th in the land in field-goal defense percentage (37.8).

Prediction

Michigan 74, Oregon 70

Moneyline (ML)

There was no moneyline posted at the time of publishing. MICHIGAN would be the pick as it is looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss on the road against Illinois. Oregon hasn’t been great away from home this season, so look for the Wolverines to get that bounce-back win.

Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS. Michigan (-3.5, -110) is favored at home, but you can expect this game to be a nip and tuck affair and a total sweatshop to the end. They need to win by two or more buckets, and I expect they’ll win by four.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Michigan to cover the spread would profit $9.09 if it does so.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 137.5 (-110) is the play, going 3-0-1 in the past four on the road for the Ducks, while going 4-0-1 in UO’s past five overall. While Michigan is coming off an Under in Illinois, the Wolverines will show much better offensive results at home.
