Report: Big Ten to release ten-game football schedule on Tuesday

The conference is expected to release an update 10-game conference-only schedule.

According to a report from AI’com’s John Talty the Big Ten is going to release an updated 2020 football schedule on Tuesday.

The Big Ten had previously announced the conference would move all fall sports–including football–to a ten-game conference-only schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently Big Ten teams have just nine games on their schedule. There is no word yet on how the conference will adjust the schedule. Expectation is a priority will be placed on division and rivalry games being played early in the season.

The ACC recently did the same as the Big Ten, but eliminated divisions for the season while adding Notre Dame to the conference for one year.

Thus far the PAC-12 and SEC have joined the Big Ten and ACC in eliminating non-conference games. The Big 12 is the only power five conference to not eliminate any potential football opponents.

On Monday afternoon Michigan State’s current week one opponent Northwestern announced they would be shutting down football workouts due to a positive COVID test. MSU’s football team is currently nearing the end of a 14-day quarantine resulting from a small outbreak amongst the team. That quarantine is scheduled to run through August 4.

Updates on COVID-19 regarding a couple of Big Ten teams

Northwestern became the latest team to suspend football activities on Monday after a positive COVID-19 test found its way to their team.

Last week Notre Dame released news that in their most-recent testing, that no football players tested positive for COVID-19.  That hasn’t happened in many places as we’ve seen the likes of Clemson, LSU, Texas, Alabama, Ohio State and plenty of other programs suspend football activities because of the number of positive tests.

One school that had not yet been the case at was Northwestern, who hadn’t had a positive test at that time.

Key word in that last sentence:  had.

Teddy Greenstein covers the Big Ten and college football like a glove for the Chicago Tribune.  Greenstein reports today that Northwestern is pressing pause on football for at least a couple of days after their first player has tested positive for COVID-19.

Also in the Big Ten numbers have come out in regards to the University of Illinois and their COVID-19 test results.  This from Shannon Ryan, also of the Chicago Tribune:

As Greenstein pointed out in his article, four Big Ten teams have already suspended football activities at different times this summer as Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan State and Rutgers have all had to hit pause at different times.

Northwestern’s decision to pause football activities now puts that number at five.

Michigan State picked to finish fifth in East Division by Big Ten media

Ohio State is the runaway favorite in the Big Ten.

There is a consensus favorite in the Big Ten and it isn’t Michigan State.

The Spartans under first-year coach Mel Tucker have been picked to finish fifth in the East Division by Big Ten Media. Cleveland.com has been running the unofficial Big Ten preseason media polling for the last ten years.

Ohio State received 33 of 34 first-place votes in the division. Penn State got the other and finished in second. The Nittany Lions were followed by Michigan, Indiana, MSU, Maryland, and Rutgers.

Out west Wisconsin and Minnesota came close to an even split in first-place votes, but the Badgers took the top spot with 19 selections. Minnesota got 14 first-place picks to finish second. They were followed by Iowa, Nebraska, Purdue, Northwestern (who got a first-place vote), and Illinois.

Ohio State was predicted to win the league in all but one scenario which had Penn State winning the league.

Ohio State’s Justin Fields was picked as the player of the year on offense and Penn State’s Micah Parsons took home that honor on defense.

Former Michigan State WR Bennie Fowler to sign with the New Orleans Saints

Former Michigan State wide receiver Bennie Fowler will reportedly sign with the New Orleans Saints.

[jwplayer 7HOYimhW]

In terms of former Michigan State Football players who are currently playing in the NFL, I think, for whatever reason, that Bennie Fowler gets slept on a little bit. He hasn’t set the league on fire, but he has proven to be a reliable wide receiver and he has parlayed that into a nice career, and it looks like that career will continue moving forward. On Thursday, it was reported that Bennie Fowler will be signing with the New Orleans Saints.

This was first reported by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

Fowler last played for the New York Giants and was released back in November. He has played six seasons in the NFL, 4 with the Denver Broncos and then 2 with the Giants, and has accumulated 1,090 yards and 6 touchdowns over his career. Fowler gets the chance to play with former Purdue Boilermaker Drew Brees.
