Wisconsin recruiting comparison: Michigan State

Wisconsin vs. MSU in recruiting

National Signing Day has come and gone and the Wisconsin Badgers have put together a fairly decent class compared to the rest of the Big Ten. In the spirit of looking at recruiting classes compared to the rest of the conference, Badgers Wire is taking a look at Wisconsin’s class on a national level and a conference level. We’ll be including their national rankings and their conference rankings. Next up on our list is a total mystery under new leadership, but was pretty under recently-departed leadership, the Michigan State Spartans. New coach Mel Tucker takes over from Colorado for Mark Dantonio.

The Spartans were a defensive powerhouse under Dantonio, winning the Rose and Cotton Bowls among others during his time as head coach. Taking over for the embattled coach is Tucker, who is the feature of a three-part segment at one of our college wire sister sites, Trojans Wire. The first installment of that series looked at Tucker’s hire at Michigan State and how the Spartans were able to lure him away from Colorado with a top assistants pool. Tucker had the money to attract top talent to his coaching staff, something which dwarfed the resources available to him in Colorado. Considering what the Spartans were under Dantonio, Tucker should consider himself fortunate that he will reportedly keep several Dantonio assistants to provide continuity on the coaching staff. It is better than he might have expected under all the circumstances.

The Spartans have the nation’s No. 43-ranked recruiting class in 2020. The coaching shakeup has left them without any recruits for the upcoming season, though that’s going to change. They finished with the Big Ten’s No. 10 recruiting class with a player average rating of .8569. Their best player is wide receiver Ricky White. At 6-foot-1, 165-pounds, Jones (.8861) is the No. 40 player in Iowa and the 68th-best receiver in the class of 2020. The Badgers (.8782) have a higher per-recruit average than the Spartans (.8647). The Badgers’ best player in 24/7’s composite rankings is offensive tackle Trey Wedig (.9643). The 6-foot-8, 320-pound behemoth is ranked (.0782) higher than White for the Spartans.

The position where both classes compare: strongside defensive end. The Badgers signed Aaron Witt (.8655), a 6-foot-5, 230-pound player out of Winona, Minnesota. He’s the No. 31 player at his position in the nation and the seventh-best player coming out of Minnesota. The Spartans signed Kyle King. At 6-foot-4 and 242 pounds, Yelverton (.8552) is the nation’s 44th-best tight end, but he’s the 7th-best player in Indiana. Both players are likely to sit and learn with veteran players ahead of them, but the beauty of a new coach is that every position is open at Michigan State.

Report: Michigan State Football signs Colorado OL coach Chris Kapilovic

New Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker continues to round out his staff, this time bring Chris Kapilovic with him from Colorado.

[jwplayer RJySF4hX]

According to a report from BuffStampede.com, Colorado offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic is expected to follow his former head coach Mel Tucker to East Lansing to fill the same position with Michigan State Football. Kapilovic will fill the position that was left vacant after Jim Bollman retired. Bollman had held the position since 2013.

With the signing of Kapilovic, the Spartans new head coach Mel Tucker is starting to round out his staff. Kapilovic will join former MSU defensive coordinator Mike Tressel and defensive line coach Ron Burton as the first three coaches to officially be announced as being part of Tucker’s staff.

“The experience here for me and my family has been awesome,” Kapilovic told BuffStampede, which is part of 247Sports.com. “We love living here, love the community. I loved coaching at CU. I love my players more than anything. That group has done everything I asked of them, and more. So, that is the part that rips your heart out.”

MSU Football recruit RB Jordon Simmons officially signs with Michigan State

Michigan State recruit Jordon Simmons delayed his signing after Mark Dantonio retired, but officially signed on Sunday night.

After MSU Football head coach Mark Dantonio shocked Spartan fans everywhere with his sudden retirement on the eve of national signing day, it led many to, rightfully, question the future of the program. 3-star running back Jordon Simmons had initially committed to join Mark Dantonio’s 2020 recruiting class, but had decided to delay his signing temporarily. That delay ended Sunday night when Simmons announced via Twitter that his signing with the team was official.

Here is Jordon Simmons’ announcement, which he shared on Twitter:

The big key to Simmons deciding to stick with his commitment? Mel Tucker. The new head coach of Michigan State already had a relationship with Simmons. According to 247sports, Colorado had also extended an offer to Simmons.

This is a big development for the 2020 MSU recruiting class who already has another 3-star running back in Donovan Eaglin sticking with his commitment as well. Simmons is the number 43 back in his class while Eaglin is number 113.

Oh, and about the Mel Tucker effect? After Tucker signed with Michigan State, Simmons was one of many players and recruits who shared their excitement on social media, retweeting a number of tweets like this one from incoming recruit Darius Snow:

Could Harlon Barnett be returning to Michigan State?

The former Michigan State assistant was spotted at the MSU vs. Maryland game Saturday

So far Mel Tucker’s staff at Michigan State looks a lot like Mark Dantonio’s 2019 staff, but that could be changing.

Well, sort of.

Tucker has hired two assistant coaches–that we know of–and both were a part of Mark Dantonio’s 2019 group of assistants, defensive line coach Ron Burton and former defensive coordinator Mike Tressel. Tressel’s role has yet to be announced, but there is speculation he could return to coaching linebackers, a position he coached in addition to his defensive coordinator duties. As Tucker continues to fill out his staff, speculation around a former Michigan State defensive assistant is ramping up thanks to a photo from the Michigan State basketball team’s game against Maryland.

Yes, that’s former Michigan State co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett sitting with Burton at the Michigan State vs. Maryland game Saturday. If you look closely, Barnett is wearing a Michigan State shirt under his jacket. Could a return to East Lansing be imminent for Barnett?

A potential Barnett return would be welcome by many Spartans. A number of his former players publicly campaigned for him to get the head coaching job last week. Michigan State had two corners get drafted in the first round under Barnett and Darqueze Dennard won the Thorpe Award as the top defensive back in the country in 2013. Barnett was rated the 32nd-best recruiter in the country in 2019 by 24/7.

Barnett left Michigan State after the 2017 season to be the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Florida State. Barnett was not retained after former FSU coach Willie Taggart was fired and is currently without a coaching job.

MSU Football coach Mel Tucker retains assistants Ron Burton & Mike Tressel

Michigan State Football coach Mel Tucker will retain two assistants from the Dantonio era in Mike Tressel & Ron Burton. Read more here.

Michigan State Football coach Mel Tucker is putting together his new staff of coaches. Tucker plans on retaining two assistants from the Dantonio era in Mike Tressel and Ron Burton. Burton joins the new staff as the defensive line coach whereas Tressel’s new role has yet to be determined.

Here is a tweet from Mel Tucker on this decision:

Initially, Ron Burton was heading to Indiana for a defensive line job. Obviously, this is no longer true. The retention of both Burton and Tressel helps Mel Tucker get up to speed on MSU’s personnel. Plus, Michigan State’s defense was certainly not a key issue last year.

Former Colorado Director of Player Personnel Geoff Martzen joining Michigan State staff

New Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker is filling out his staff.

It looks like Mel Tucker has hired his first new staff member at Michigan State.

Former Colorado Director of Player Personnel Geoff Martzen is seemingly joining Tucker in East Lansing if we are to believe his Twitter account.

Martzen has also changed his bio on Twitter to read “Michigan State University Football”. His location on Twitter has been update to East Lansing, MI and his background photo is now Michigan State themed.

Martzen was hired by Tucker at Colorado for the 2019 season. Prior to that he was UCLA’s Director of Player Personnel under Chip Kelly in 2018 and held the same position at Colorado State from 2015-2017.

Directors of Player Personnel play a large role in a program’s overall recruiting efforts. MSU’s Director of Player Personnel under Mark Dantonio in 2019 was Dino Folino. Folino held that job for the previous 18 seasons.

Kentucky Associate Head Coach reportedly turns down Michigan State Football offer

Vince Marrow of Kentucky has reportedly rejected an offer to become the lead recruiter at Michigan State.

The Mel Tucker era is underway at Michigan State and he is currently looking to fill his coaching staff with prime talent from around the country. According to a report from Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio, Tucker reached out to Kentucky’s Vince Marrow to become the lead recruiter for Tucker’s administration. Today, Jones provided an update, declaring that Marrow turned down Tucker’s offer.

This comes after reports indicated that Tucker and MSU had made a large counteroffer to the associate head coach and tight ends coach from Kentucky, which he has reportedly rejected.

Here is Matt Jones initial reaction and announcement of Marrow’s decision:

It was reported earlier in the week that Tucker will not be retaining any of Dantonio’s staff, but he will need to start moving quickly to fill his staff openings to get everything in order for the season.

We will keep updating this story as more details emerge.
