Michigan State football is searching for a new chief of staff.

Geoff Martzen has reportedly resigned as the Spartans’ football chief of staff. Martzen’s last day with the program is Friday.

Martzen followed head coach Mel Tucker from Colorado, joining the program in February 2020. Martzen was with Tucker at Colorado, and prior to that served as the director of player personnel at UCLA for one season.

“Geoff is an outstanding evaluator of talent and players,” Tucker said in Martzen’s bio. “He’s a tireless worker and a competitor. He really understands the importance of recruiting and how it’s the lifeblood of the program.”

Report: MSU Football hires Scott Aligo of Akron as Director of Player Personnel

Michigan State Football has reportedly signed Scott Aligo from Akron as their new Director of Player Personnel.

[jwplayer RJySF4hX]

According to a report from Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Michigan State Football has hired Scott Aligo to be their new Director of Player Personnel. Aligo currently holds that position with the University of Akron in Ohio.

This is very interesting because we were originally under the impression that Geoff Martzen would be occupying that position, as that was his role at Colorado and it was already announced that he was heading to MSU with Tucker, but Feldman also indicated that Martzen would take on the role of Chief of Staff.

Feldman broke the news about Mel Tucker and he is extremely credible so I would expect this to be accurate. According to the University of Akron website, Aligo has a long history of both college and NFL experience. He has had stints with the Kansas City Chiefs as a player personnel assistant, the Cleveland Browns in a similar role, and he was a defensive assistant with Texas A&M between 2012-14, among numerous other roles.

Former Colorado Director of Player Personnel Geoff Martzen joining Michigan State staff

New Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker is filling out his staff.

It looks like Mel Tucker has hired his first new staff member at Michigan State.

Former Colorado Director of Player Personnel Geoff Martzen is seemingly joining Tucker in East Lansing if we are to believe his Twitter account.

Martzen has also changed his bio on Twitter to read “Michigan State University Football”. His location on Twitter has been update to East Lansing, MI and his background photo is now Michigan State themed.

Martzen was hired by Tucker at Colorado for the 2019 season. Prior to that he was UCLA’s Director of Player Personnel under Chip Kelly in 2018 and held the same position at Colorado State from 2015-2017.

Directors of Player Personnel play a large role in a program’s overall recruiting efforts. MSU’s Director of Player Personnel under Mark Dantonio in 2019 was Dino Folino. Folino held that job for the previous 18 seasons.
