Michigan State football OT transfer Ethan Boyd chooses Colorado

Ethan Boyd is headed to Colorado

Michigan State lost Ethan Boyd to the NCAA transfer portal this past week, at the conclusion of spring football. While all accounts indicate that Boyd had lost his starting spot to Ashton Lepo, his loss still felt from a depth perspective.

It didn’t take long for Boyd to find his new home, after one visit to Boulder, he will be headed to play for Coach Prime and Colorado.

MSU reportedly still in ‘mix’ for transfer DL Derrick Harmon

Could defensive lineman Derrick Harmon be returning to Michigan State after all?

Could defensive lineman Derrick Harmon be returning to Michigan State after all?

College football insider Pete Nakos of On3 put out a list of schools still “in the mix” for Harmon — which included Michigan State. Harmon entered the transfer portal last week and has been considered one of the best available portal targets remaining.

Colorado and USC have been rumored as the favorites to land Harmon. However, a return to Michigan State could also be in play. Should Harmon return, it would be a big lift for the Spartans’ defense in 2024.

Michigan State football reserve DB Khary Crump enters transfer portal

Michigan State football reserve DB Khary Crump enters transfer portal

Michigan State football saw a mass exodus of players this week as the spring transfer portal window came to a close. However, we can still expect a few more names to trickle in as there is apparently a bit of a lag on the processing for some of these. We saw that on Wednesday when defensive back Khary Crump entered the portal.

Crump was a former transfer from Arizona who has largely been a reserve for the Spartans.

Former Michigan State football LB Aaron Brule comments on flurry of MSU transfers

Former Michigan State football LB Aaron Brule comments on flurry of MSU transfers

Former Michigan State football linebacker is very familiar with the transfer portal process, using it himself to join Michigan State from his original home at Mississippi State. But, that doesn’t mean he’s a fan of what he has been seeing around the MSU program this week.

Brule, who is currently set to join the New Orleans Saints at their rookie mini-camp, took to social media to give his thoughts on the situation regarding multiple Michigan State players choose to enter the portal to presumably find a bigger NIL contract for themselves.

The subtext, and implication here, which MSU insider Justin Thind also hinted at below, is that these players are being not just influenced, but heavily pushed by ‘agents’ to continuously try to renegotiate their NIL deals or threaten to enter the transfer portal.

Some of the players we have seen enter the portal this week from Michigan State have already renegotiated their deals, only to come back when this last portal round opened to try and threaten for more money. Without a collective bargaining agreement or a contract, this is completely fair game, although it is probably not what is best for the program or the player. But hey, it is great for the agents who are swooping in to grab easy commission checks by changing the future lives of their young clients.

For some of these players, they will be leaving a great situation at Michigan State, a school in a premiere conference, surrounded by an experienced, proven staff that has developed innumerable NFL players as a collective, to go chase a ‘bag’ at a school that might not even be a good fit for them. It’s sad to see.

Michigan State football safety Jaden Mangham enters transfer portal

Michigan State football safety Jaden Mangham enters transfer portal

Just a few hours after his brother Jaren entered the portal, Michigan State football safety Jaden Mangham is now in the transfer portal as well.

Mangham was a starter for nearly the entire season last year, and we had flagged him as a player that could be next in line to be drafted, so this definitely doesn’t feel great. However, safety is a position that is well-represented in the portal and I don’t think this is that big of a blow, compared to losing someone like Derrick Harmon at a key position.
