NBC announces first two ‘Big Ten Saturday Night’ matchups of 2024

NBC announces first two “Big Ten Saturday Night” matchups of 2024

NBC announced the first two matchups of its “Big Ten Saturday Night” slate in 2024.

The first: Fresno State at Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Aug. 31.

The second: Colorado at Nebraska at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Sept. 7.

Both matchups carry weight in early season out-of-conference play. Michigan enters Week 1 off its 15-0 national championship-winning 2023 season. Jim Harbaugh and most of the 2023 Wolverines are gone, but the program will still celebrate to kick off 2024.

Week 2 is a rematch of last year’s contest won by Colorado, 36-14. It’s a marquee early season game between two teams with high expectations entering the season. Nebraska looks for a big Year 2 jump under Matt Rhule, while Deion Sanders and Colorado dominate every offseason storyline.

Wisconsin hosts Western Michigan and South Dakota in weeks 1 and 2, respectively. Those matchups weren’t real candidates for a national television prime-time broadcast.

In Week 3, however, the Badgers host first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The matchup lost some luster with Nick Saban’s retirement, but Alabama will likely enter as a top-10 team. It will present Luke Fickell with an ideal opportunity for a statement win early in his second year in charge.

That contest will be on Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff,” as announced on Monday.

Michigan Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wolverines miss from the Big Ten West Division?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, going to Iowa is never easy for anyone in the midst of the season, and yeah, yeah, yeah, Nebraska should be better – it gave the Wolverines a fight last year – and Illinois should be a tough out, but missing Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin is big break. They also miss Northwestern from the West.

The Ohio State game is in Columbus, but in division play, Michigan State has to come down the road and Penn State is a home game. Both are sandwiched around a well-time late October week off.

Michigan Football Schedule What To Know: If it seems like Michigan is never on the road, there’s a reason

It’s not.

The first four games of the year are in Ann Arbor, giving everyone time to get back up to speed before a two game road stretch at Iowa and Indiana.

The only other road game before the regular season finale against Ohio State is at Rutgers. That’s coming off the Penn State and Michigan State game, but … it’s Rutgers.

That means Michigan has just one road game from October 8th through November 26th.

Michigan Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

While other Big Ten teams have to gear up for Notre Dame (Ohio State), Oklahoma (Nebraska), Virginia (Illinois), Washington State (Wisconsin), Washington (Michigan State), Auburn (Penn State), and Colorado (Minnesota) in non-conference play, Michigan gets … Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn.

The general fair rule of thumb is that every Power Five team should play at least one other Power Five non-conference team – this isn’t right, but it’ll certainly be a huge help.

As long as the Wolverines can take care of home against Penn State and Michigan State, anything less than 10-1 before going to Ohio State won’t be okay.

Michigan Wolverines Football Schedule Analysis: The Wolverines will get  one giant test against Washington early on, but the first month isn’t bad if they can pull that off.

It gets fun in a hurry with the run against the West, suffering the bad luck of playing both Wisconsin and Northwestern, and needing to go on the road to face Nebraska.

The Ohio State game is at home, but the dates with Michigan State and Penn State are on the road as part of a run of three away dates in four weeks.

Michigan Wolverines Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: Michigan beats Washington and has no issues with the rest of September, including the Big Ten opener against Rutgers. If everything works perfectly, they survive the trip to Wisconsin and beat Wisconsin to stay perfect going into the off week.

Realistically, the start to the second half isn’t all that bad. With a win over Michigan State, the Wolverines are 9-0 going into the date with Penn State. At the very least, they’re 10-1 going into the showdown against Ohio State in Ann Arbor.

Michigan Wolverines Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: Michigan loses to Washington, loses to Wisconsin in Madison, and even worse, loses to Nebraska in Lincoln. Just when it seems like things couldn’t be any rougher for Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines lose again to Michigan State, drop the date at Penn State, and of course, get obliterated by Ohio State.
