The UFC stays in Las Vegas this week with a key women’s strawweight bout at the top of the card.

UFC on ESPN+ 35 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] (12-8 MMA, 7-8 UFC) becomes the first Black woman to headline a UFC card when she takes on [autotag]Michelle Waterson[/autotag] (17-8 MMA, 5-4 UFC). Hill is a slight favorite, but our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts have her with a big lead at 11-3.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Ottman Azaitar[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) meets slight favorite [autotag]Khama Worthy[/autotag] (16-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) at lightweight, and despite the reasonably close odds, only two of our pickers are taking Azaitar in a mild upset.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Andrea Lee[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) meets [autotag]Roxanne Modafferi[/autotag] (24-17 MMA, 3-5 UFC) in a women’s flyweight bout. Lee is the biggest favorite on the main card at more than 3-1, but our pickers nearly are split down the middle. Lee has just an 8-6 lead in the picks.

[autotag]Ed Herman[/autotag] (24-14 MMA, 12-10 UFC) is a +200 underdog at light heavyweight against [autotag]Mike Rodriguez[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC), but he’s got his fair share of underdog pickers. Rodriguez has a 9-5 picking edge.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Kyle Nelson[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has three pickers taking him in a featherweight upset against [autotag]Billy Quarantillo[/autotag] (14-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC).

(Note: The lightweight fight between Bobby Green (26-10-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) and Alan Patrick (15-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) was added to the main card too late for our picks deadline.)

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Waterson (52 percent), Worthy (64 percent), Lee (61 percent), Rodriguez (66 percent) and Quarantillo (84 percent) are the choices.

Michelle Waterson wants to put damage on Angela Hill, looks forward to ‘a hot mess’

Michelle Waterson admits the constant grind of being a perennial contender had taken a bit of a toll, but that’s all changed.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Michelle Waterson[/autotag] admits the constant grind of being a perennial UFC contender had taken a bit of a toll, but as she prepared for her upcoming headliner with Angela Hill, that all changed.

“I kind of left with a bit of a salty taste in my mouth after my last fight, so just falling in love with the training, falling in love with learning and growing and getting better and the grit and the grind of it all has been refreshing,” Waterson told MMA Junkie. “So to be bumped up to main event just adds to that refreshment, and it’s exciting. I’m excited to go five rounds with a game opponent like Angela.”

Waterson (17-8 MMA, 5-4 UFC) and Hill (12-8 MMA, 7-8 UFC) meet in the strawweight main event of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 35, which streams live on ESPN+ from UFC Apex.

It’s Waterson’s second fight in the pandemic era, after coming up short in a razor-thin split-decision to Carla Esparza at May’s UFC 249. Waterson admitted the fanless environment wreaked a bit of havoc on her execution.

“I do think think that hearing her coaches and hearing commentators played a part into me not pushing in the last fight,” Waterson said. “I thought that I was winning. I could hear the desperation in her corner. I could hear the commentators say, ‘Carla needs to do something.’ So I didn’t feel the need to push, especially against an opponent like Carla who is really good at strategically taking the round

“Having it that intimate and being able to listen to, like, the conversations can sometimes be a negative, so we focused a lot in this camp on just being able to focus on my corner and trusting in myself and going in there and taking the fight, not leaving it up to the judges.”

[lawrence-related id=550858,550265,550372]

Waterson and Hill were originally expected to meet in August, but in the UFC’s constantly juggling current world, the contest was pushed back a few weeks. It was then promoted to the headliner when Glover Teixeira’s positive COVID-19 delayed his bout with Thiago “Marreta” Santos.

Keeping her championship mindset in the forefront, Waterson said moving from three rounds to five was no issue.

“My end game is to fight for the championship belt, and that’s a five-round fight, so we always train for five-round fights, and we’re ready for it,” Waterson said.

But for Waterson, the championship mindset isn’t just being able to go 25 minutes. Back-to-back decision losses to former champions have resonated with Waterson, and she said the constant worry about where she stands in the rankings and the questions of “what comes next?” proved unproductive.

A lifelong martial artist, Waterson said she got caught up in the sport and forgot about the root of the clash.

“The gameplan is to win the fight, regardless of where it goes,” Waterson said. “But also, I’m really eager to get in there and put some damage on. I think I’ve gotten away from that just under the pressure of trying to climb the ladder and just trying to win, and forgetting about what the objective of fighting is. The purpose of it is to put the most damage on the other person. I’m excited to get in there and put some damage on her.”

With Waterson’s karate background and Hill’s history with muay Thai, the fight could end up being rather entertaining. Waterson certainly hopes it turns out that way, and she thinks if she can make sure she’s mentally in the moment, everything else will take care of itself.

“The ultimate goal is getting my hand raised,” Waterson said. “As far as proving something here or there, I think that I’ve been fighting for so long, and it’s funny because you can kind of get caught in this routine of fighting, and for me, it’s kind of weird how it comes full circle where it’s really exciting to just get in there and fight.

“I don’t care for it to be technical. I don’t care for it to be pretty. It probably will turn into a mess, but that’s what fights are sometimes, and so I’m looking forward to it being a hot mess.”

Strawweight contenders Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill will now headline the UFC’s Sept. 12 event.

Strawweight contenders [autotag]Michelle Waterson[/autotag] and [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] will now compete in a five-round fight next week.

Michelle Waterson wants to strategize less and just throw down against Angela Hill

“I’m more excited to go out there and connect – connect my fist to her face.”

[autotag]Michelle Waterson[/autotag] vows to not hold back in her upcoming fight.

Waterson (17-8 MMA, 5-4 UFC), who lost a split decision to Carla Esparza in her most recent bout at UFC 249, faces [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] on Sept. 12 looking to avoid the first three-fight losing streak of her career. Waterson, a former Invicta FC atomweight champion, expects the stylistic matchup with fellow striker Hill to allow her to let loose as she looks to put the frustrating loss to Esparza behind her.

Waterson wants to think less and fight more without worrying about the outcome.

“I think what it comes down to is I’m excited to go out there and fight,” Waterson told MMA Junkie. “I’m kinda done with trying to strategize and this and that. I’m excited to fight. I’m excited to punch her in the face, put some damage on her.”

She continued, “I walked away from my last fight pretty upset with myself and feeling as if it was not even as strenuous as a sparring match that I’ve had in training, and I never want to walk away with that feeling again. So I’m gonna go in there, I’m gonna lay it all on the line, and I’m gonna throw down with her. Stand there and trade with her because, at the end of the day, it’s a fight.”

[lawrence-related id=546752,546531,546607]

Hill (12-8 MMA, 6-8 UFC) is coming off a split decision loss herself, and Waterson thinks that, in a matchup pitting two fighters eager to bounce back, the fight naturally should deliver.

“For sure potential ‘Fight of the Night,’ and I say that because that’s where my heart is right now,” Waterson said. “My heart is to go out there and just let it all out. I think I’m over trying to overthink it. I’m over trying to strategize. I’m over trying to win. I’m more excited to go out there and connect – connect my fist to her face.”
