John Franklin-Myers, Micheal Clemons could see more work inside

More inside work possibly coming for JFM and Clemons.

The Jets have a lot of bodies on the edge to help rush the passer. That includes first-round pick Will McDonald IV. They say you can never have enough pass-rushers in the NFL. Sometimes, you even can move those rushers inside and let them just go right up the middle.

The Jets could potentially test that with John Franklin-Myers (five sacks in 2022) and Micheal Clemons (2.5 sacks). Both already have the ability to move inside if need be and they could be asked to do so even more in 2023.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich spoke to the media this week and talked about that possibility.

“JFM obviously has done that (playing interior) his entire career. I’ve always believed that’s kind of his superpower when you reduce inside on passing downs and let him work guards and do his thing in there. And I think Mike has the same ability. Mike is, as you’ve probably seen, he’s not a small man. I don’t know exactly what he was weighing last year, but he’s in the 290’s, I think, so he’s a guy that could easily reduce inside and have a lot of success in there. He’s a guy that’s a good athlete outside, but he’s a great athlete inside, so it’ll be fun to see him get work at both.”

Ulbrich also touched on Clemons being in a good spot being at about 290 pounds.

“I think ultimately that’s kind of like the JFM big end type role where on first and second down, he can absolutely demolish the edge and be a great edge setter and do all that and still provide some rush out there, but then on the passing downs, utilizing his athleticism and speed on the guards and centers.”

The Jets also recently restructured the contract of Franklin-Myers, showing a bit of faith in the 26-year-old.

Behind Quinnen Williams, New York also has Quinton Jefferson, Al Woods, Solomon Thomas, Tanzel Smart, Marquiss Spencer and Isaiah Mack at defensive tackle. Franklin-Myers and Clemons could also help with depth there.

The more the Jets can move around their defensive linemen, the more versatile the defense can be and the better the team will be overall in what is shaping up to be a big season for the Jets, at least they hope.

Jets vs. Bills final injury report: Micheal Clemons (questionable) only player with game designation

Only Micheal Clemons is questionable for Sunday

As far as active players go, the Jets’ final injury report is about as clean as it can be, especially for Week 14.

The Jets only gave one player a game designation for Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. In fact, only one player even remained on the injury report after Friday’s practice. That player was Micheal Clemons, who wound up missing all week of practice with the flu. He is listed as questionable for Sunday.

Everyone else — including Duane Brown, Ashtyn Davis, Corey Davis, George Fant, Lamarcus Joyner and DJ Reed — practiced in full Friday. All the players mentioned began the week on the injury report but were taken off the report Friday.

For the Bills, two key players will miss Sunday. Fullback Reggie Gilliam (ankle) and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (shoulder) have been ruled out after missing practice all week.

Two other key players for the Bills are questionable but did trend in the right direction Friday. Offensive tackle Dion Dawkins (ankle) practiced in full Friday after being limited Wednesday and Thursday while linebacker Matt Milano is questionable with a knee injury but was upgraded to a limited practice after missing Wednesday and Thursday’s practices.

Jets Thursday report: As flu bug starts to wear off, just about all looking good while Micheal Clemons remains out

Only Micheal Clemons missed practice Thursday

The flu bug caused four players to miss practice on Wednesday for the New York Jets. Three of those players returned to practice Thursday. Corey Davis, George Fant and DJ Reed all were listed as limited participants Thursday, but an upgrade nonetheless from Wednesday and they are trending in the right direction for Sunday against the Bills.

The one player that hasn’t returned yet is Micheal Clemons, who missed his second day of practice this week but still has a chance to return Friday.

The rest of the injury report was the same as Wednesday. Duane Brown (shoulder), Ashtyn Davis (hamstring) and Lamarcus Joyner (hip) were all limited again Thursday but all should be good for Sunday.

Watch: Jets block punt, Will Parks returns for touchdown

Micheal Clemons blocks the punt and Will Parks gets the touchdown

Brant Boyer has made a huge impact on the Jets special teams of late and his unit has had a day so far. First, it was a blocked field goal in the second quarter by Quinnen Williams. Then in the third quarter, the Jets top that with a blocked punt by Micheal Clemons that led to a touchdown return from Will Parks and now, all of a sudden, the Jets have all the momentum, taking a 17-3 lead.

Enjoy another big moment from Clemons.

One player comparison for every Jets draft pick

Jets Wire thought up some comps for each member of Gang Green’s 2022 draft class:

NFL players like to see themselves as unique, but scouts and pundits often try to compare prospects to established talent.

So who do the Jets’ seven 2022 draft picks compare to? Jets Wire was wondering the same thing and came up with player comps for each member of New York’s class. These are best-case scenarios of course, and not guaranteed to come to fruition.

Let’s get started with Ahmad Gardner and a comparison Robert Saleh would love to see come true.

5 things to know about new Jets DE Micheal Clemons

New Jets defensive end Micheal Clemons plays with the kind of nastiness Robert Saleh loves. Things to know about him:

The Jets followed up their first round selection of Jermaine Johnson II by adding more nasty to their defensive line with the pick of Texas A&M defensive end Micheal Clemons in the fourth round.

New York held Clemons in high regard throughout the pre-draft process and jumped at the chance to take him with its final draft pick. The Jets had other needs they could have addressed with the pick, but Joe Douglas decided adding a high-upside defensive lineman was worth it in that spot.

Let’s get to know a bit more about Clemons.

4 takeaways from Jets drafting Micheal Clemons

Breaking down the Jets’ selection of Texas A&M DE Micheal Clemons with the 117th pick of the 2022 NFL draft:

The Jets used their final pick of the 2022 NFL draft to add to their defensive line depth, selecting Texas A&M defensive end Micheal Clemons with the 117th pick.

Clemons was an integral part of a Texas A&M defensive line that was among the better units in the SEC in 2021. He joins first-round pick Jermaine Johnson as a pass rusher who has the potential to help Jeff Ulbrich’s defense right off the bat.

Let’s take a closer look at what Clemons brings to the table with four takeaways.

2022 NFL draft: Jets take Micheal Clemons with 117th pick

The Jets used the 117th pick in the 2022 NFL draft on DE Micheal Clemons.

The Jets added more help in the trenches on Day 3 of the draft, using their second fourth-rounder on DE Micheal Clemons.

Clemons, the 117th overall pick, joins first-rounder Jermaine Johnson on New York’s revamped defensive line. Clemons is coming off a breakout season at Texas A&M, where he recorded 23 tackles, 11 TFLs, seven sacks, two deflections, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one touchdown as a senior. All were career-highs.

Clemons, who is 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, finished his college career with 20.5 TFLs and 12.5 sacks.

7 edge rush prospects for Cowboys to consider through 2022 draft weekend

The Cowboys have a definite draft need on the edge, but what round will they scratch the itch? @TimLettiero provides a look at a list of prospects for each draft weekend day.

The Dallas Cowboys have employed some of the game’s best sack artists across their storied careers. Harvey Martin and Charles Haley are legendary staples of some of the greatest teams in franchise history. While it was a shock that DeMarcus Ware didn’t make the Hall of Fame this past February, his name will likely be called soon.

Young phenom Micah Parsons certainly helps this however his dynamic ability in multiple facets raises questions if he should be pigeon holed into one role. Dallas re-signed veteran DE DeMarcus Lawrence, who has consistently graded out as one of the game’s best edge rushers despite only two seasons of double-digit takedowns. There are question marks beyond those two, though, and as Parsons will primarily play off-ball linebacker, there’s a need to grab a young edge player in the draft later this month.

Dorance Armstrong is an intriguing re-sign, but his career high in sacks happened last season at five. Watching DE Randy Gregory walk out the door after a breakout year undoubtedly hurts.

Tarell Basham, Chauncey Golston and recently signed veteran DE Dante Fowler round out the current group and while it’s enough to go into a season with, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn loves to rotate players, so the more the merrier. Here are some names who would be good additions and potential long-term starters.

Texas A&M DE Micheal Clemons could help the Texans’ run defense

The Houston Texans wouldn’t need to go very far to help their run defense by drafting Texas A&M DE Michael Clemons.

The Houston Texans defensive line needs some work.

Although the Texans weren’t the worst in the NFL at yards per carry surrendered and rushing yards surrendered per game in 2021, they were in the bottom-10 at 4.6 (tied for fifth-most) and 142.2 (second-most). If teams needed yards on the ground, they knew they could get them against Houston.

A name the Texans should monitor throughout the draft process to determine if he can help their run game is Texas A&M defensive end Micheal Clemons.

According to Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports, Clemons is a sleeper prospect that is due to have some impressive workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Clemons might win the weigh-ins for the edge-rusher position. He’s listed at 6-5 and 270 pounds and looks every bit that sizable on film. While his 10-yard split might be slow, he plays with impressive functional athleticism for a prospect with his mass, and his length gives offensive tackles recurring nightmares throughout the game.

Clemons looks like he’s already been in an NFL strength and conditioning program. While he may not have 15-sack upside, he’s ready to play on the edge in the pros tomorrow, and his measurements and workout should indicate that to everybody.

The Texans have a young trio ready to take the next step in Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 system in defensive tackles Ross Blacklock, Roy Lopez, and defensive end Jonathan Greenard. If the Texans decide to get something other than edge rusher at No. 3 overall in Round 1 of the 2022 NFL draft, they can still find a helpful edge-setter who can defend the run in Clemons.

Clemons would also be a decent fit for new defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire’s coaching style.

“Without anything you’re going to see from the defensive line group, four guys, scalded ass dogs running to the ball every snap,” Cesaire told reporters on Feb. 22. “Whether that’s a run situation, whether it’s a pass situation, those guys are going to run to the ball, and we’re going to try to punch the ball out. We’re going to try to create negative plays and we’re going to try to generate pressure with four guys.”

Clemons played in 10 games for the Aggies and generated 32 combined tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, which he returned for a touchdown.
