Ravens fall to 7-4 as offense sputters in 18-16 loss to Steelers in Week 11

Lamar Jackson will have to wait a few weeks to get that much-needed win over the Steelers after the Ravens sputtered in neutral for most of the afternoon in an 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium.

The NFL’s No. 1 ranked quarterback in QBR, Jackson was 16-33 passing for 207 yards (6.3 avg), one touchdown, one interception, and a 66.1 rating, the lowest of this season.

Jackson had four carries for 46 yards, while Derrick Henry was held to 65 yards (5.0 avg) on 13 carries and one rushing touchdown, tying the single-season franchise record for touchdowns.

Zach Orr’s maligned defense held Pittsburgh to 4-16 on third downs and 303 total yards, but Pittsburgh held the football for 36:22, compared to Baltimore’s 23:38.

The Steelers held the Ravens ‘ top-ranked offense to 329 yards and just 124 yards rushing. Justin Tucker’s two missed field goals will further magnify the two-point loss. On the day, Tucker was 1-3 on field goal attempts, while Steelers kicker Chris Boswell was a perfect 6-6, including a 57-yard field goal.

Baltimore will quickly regroup before a massive Monday night matchup against Jim Harbaugh and the 6-3 Los Angeles Chargers.

The Baltimore Ravens were busy ahead of the NFL trade deadline this season, acquiring both wide receiver Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers and cornerback Tre’Davious White from the Los Angeles Rams. It has been reported that the Ravens were in on other players, including cornerback Marshon Lattimore and defensive end Calais Campbell.

NFL Insider Albert Breer reported that Baltimore offered the New Orleans Saints a third-round pick for Lattimore but was outbid by the Washington Commanders in the end. Breer added that the Ravens had a deal to reunite with Campbell in a trade with the Miami Dolphins that ultimately fell through.

Campbell signed with the Dolphins this offseason, hoping to compete for a Super Bowl. Still, mainly due to a concussion sidelining quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for multiple games, Miami currently sits at 2-6. The Ravens have dealt with several injuries to the defensive line, with defensive tackle Michael Pierce going to injured reserve with a calf injury, defensive end Brent Urban missing several games with a concussion and defensive tackle Travis Jones dealing with an ankle injury that severely hindered his performance until recently.

Campbell, 38, is still playing at a high level for the Dolphins this season and would have been a solid addition to Baltimore’s pass rush, further helping to create opportunities for players such as defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike and outside linebackers Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy on passing downs.

Underused pass catcher Tylan Wallace had three catches for 115 yards (38.3 avg) and one touchdown, including an 84-yard catch and run that resulted in Lamar Jackson’s longest touchdown pass of his career, as Baltimore held on for a 35-34 win at home on Thursday night. Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase almost spoiled the Purple Rising party, as the former LSU star logged 11 catches on 17 targets for 264 yards (26.4 average) and three touchdowns, with a long of 70 yards for a touchdown.

In another near-perfect performance, Jackson was 25-33 passing for 290 yards (8.8 avg), four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 141.4 rating. His AFC North rival, Joe Burrow, did his part for the Bengals, hanging in the pocket as he went 34-56 passing for 428 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

The Ravens defense allowed 470 yards, as Cincinnati was 8-16 on third downs.   Baltimore was sloppy on the night, with 11 penalties for 81 yards.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh weighs in on banged up Baltimore defensive line

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh weighed in on the team’s banged up defensive line

The Baltimore Ravens picked up a huge win against the Denver Broncos in Week 9. They won the game by the final score of 41-10, and were in control for essentially the entire contest.

Baltimore earned the win while playing banged up on the interior of the defensive line. Head coach John Harbaugh talked about the group, saying they held up great and making sure to mention he’s proud of his guys.

“They held up great. Obviously ‘Madubeeks’ [Justin Madubuike], he led the group; he led the charge. But then you had two guys up off the practice squad – Chris Wormley and Josh Tupou. Those two guys, they stepped it up, and we’ve always thought those were quality players – really good football players. Hats off to those guys as well. Broderick Washington played very well also. [I’m] proud of those guys.”

The Ravens were missing Michael Pierce and Brent Urban, and had Travis Jones not play a single snap due to an injury. Multiple different players stepped up in Week 9, and the defensive line was one of many units to put up a quality-caliber effort.

Ravens’ Michael Pierce sees benefit of bringing back same defensive line in 2024

Ravens defensive lineman Michael Pierce sees the benefit of bringing back their entire offensive line

Over the past few seasons, the Baltimore Ravens have had one of the most consistent defensive line rooms in the NFL. Their mix of veteran and young talent has ensured that they never miss a beat regardless of who’s in the game, and their star power makes them a force to deal with on every snap.

Baltimore defensive lineman Michael Pierce was asked about the benefits of bringing back the team’s entire defensive line from 2023 to the 2024 season. He said there are significant reasons why it’s a big deal, including continuity and having players that contribute to winning on the roster.

I would believe so. Anytime you can have continuity, more so, bringing back guys who actually impact winning. We brought back ‘Beeks’ [Justin Madubuike] – one of the best D-tackles in the league [and] obviously [an NFL] Top 100 kind of guy. [As far as] myself I played well, obviously Broddy [DE / DT Broderick Washington] will be here again, and Travis [Jones] here again; they’ve taken tremendous steps. [The Ravens] bringing back ‘Urb’ [Brent Urban who is a] solid five[-technique]. They don’t have a lot of those around the league, so [I’m] glad to have him back.” [Additionally] adding a lot of guys like [Deadrin] Senat and Josh [Tupou] and all those guys. Anytime you want to have a great defense, you bring back guys throughout the secondary and in front that I just spoke on. [But] having continuity, having guys who contribute to winning and understand how things go and how things fit together is important.”

Pierce is a crucial cog in the Ravens’ defensive line unit, especially as a player who can both stop the run and rush the passer at a high level. The veteran has carved out an excellent career and should have another productive year in Zach Orr’s defense.
