Eagles agree to deal with long snapper Rick Lovato

The Eagles return two key free agents after agreeing to terms with long snapper Rick Lovato and punter Braden Mann on a two-year extension.

Philadelphia had one of the NFL’s top special teams units down the stretch in 2023, and they return all the core members after agreeing to terms on Tuesday with long snapper Rick Lovato on a one-year extension and punter Braden Mann on a two-year extension.

Both players were scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on Wednesday.

Lovato is the third-longest-tenured member of the Eagles after the departures of Fletcher Cox and Jason Cox having signed with the Eagles late in the 2016 season.

He’s one of four remaining members of the Super Bowl LII Championship team still on the roster.

Lovato He’s played in all 133 games (including playoffs) since arriving in Philadelphia, earning Pro Bowl honors following the 2019 campaign.

The Eagles have spent the offseason retooling the coaching staff after losing six of their final seven games played, but one bright spot will be sticking around.

Philadelphia has agreed to a contract extension with special teams coordinator Michael Clay.

Clay’s unit led the NFL with DVOA and finished first in punt return yards, as Britain Covey averaged the league’s second-most yards per punt return (14.4).

His 14.4 mark is the 3rd-highest in franchise history, behind Brian Westbrook’s 15.3 in 2003 and DeSean Jackson’s 15.2 in 2009. His career average is now up to 11.6, which is the 4th-highest in Eagles history – behind Ernie Steele (14.7) and Steve Van Buren (13.9) from the 1940s and Westbrook (12.8).

His 11.6 career average is also the 5th-highest in NFL history by an undrafted player, and his 14.4 is the 5th-highest in a single season by an undrafted player.

Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay is wary of New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan and his ability to pin returners.

The New York Giants head to Philadelphia on Monday to face the Eagles in a Christmas Day battle.

The Eagles have lost three in a row and they have way more to lose than the Giants, so they’ll be ready to hit the ground running. The Giants may not have as much to play for, but they still have a lot to prove so it’s not like they’ll just let the Eagles run down the field.

Most of the time, opposing teams focus on Saquon Barkley or Kayvon Thibodeaux as a way to gain leverage on the Giants. But they aren’t the only X-factors on the team.

This year, punter Jamie Gillan has done an excellent job making returns difficult, something not unnoticed by Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay.

“Jamie Gillan is doing an unbelievable job this year. He is really pinning returners, taking away their avenue of getting north and south. He is putting it outside the numbers with some good hang time and allows the gunners to make a lot of plays,” Clay told reporters this week.

“T-Mac does an unbelievable job giving out some different formations that you got to really study and make sure you’re on point in case they want to try something funky out of it.”

Special teams have caused the Giants a lot of headaches this season, but those problems were generally not on Gillan’s shoulders. This is something the Giants must take note of and use to their advantage on Monday.

Michael Clay is returning to the Philadelphia Eagles and the special team’s coordinator landed a raise and extra year on his contract

The Eagles are looking to maintain some continuity with the coaching staff, and the team is reportedly high on special team coordinator, Michael Clay.

Aaron Wilson is reporting that Philadelphia has added an extra year to Clay’s contract, while also adding more money to his salary.

One weak spot on the NFC’s top team, Philadelphia’s special team unit finished 31st in the NFL in Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings and was ranked tied for 29th by PFF.

“Yes he will (return),” Sirianni said. “I thought we did a nice job as far as just improving. We had some rocky beginnings in special teams and I thought we did a nice job improving those special teams as the year went along. A lot of credit to Coach Clay, and obviously a lot of credit to the players that stepped up and made plays to do so.”

The Eagles finished in the top five in offense and defense this season, but head coach Nick Sirianni had previously provided a vote of confidence for the rising assistant coach.

The Eagles officially announced on Thursday Nick Sirianni’s first staff as the team’s head coach.

In all, Sirianni nabbed 23 assistants who bring an assortment of experience from both the NFL and the college ranks.

Eight members of Sirianni’s staff have previous experience with the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles allowed Dave Fipp to move on to the Detroit Lions as their new special teams coordinator.

Now per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Philadelphia and New York Jets both have reached out to the San Francisco 49ers to interview assistant special teams coach Michael Clay for positions on their staffs.

Clay, who’s only 29, played linebacker at Oregon under Chip Kelly and after a failed attempt in the NFL, he joined the Eagles’ coaching staff in 2014 as a quality control coach and special teams assistant.

Clay has spent the last four years as the 49ers assistant special teams coach and has spent five years overall with the team after serving in a strength and conditioning role.
