Giants injury report: Daniel Jones continues to miss practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (neck) missed practice again on Thursday as the team’s injury report somehow grew in size.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Thursday but did so without starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who remains sidelined due to a neck injury.

Although head coach Brian Daboll refused to rule Jones out for a Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills, things appear to be trending in that direction.

In addition to Jones and the remaining injury report, which was already large in scale, punter Jamie Gillan was added as a non-participant. He missed Thursday’s practice with what the Giants called an “illness.”

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: QB Daniel Jones (neck), LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Matt Peart (shoulder), LB Azeez Ojulari (ankle), P Jamie Gillan (illness), RB Gary Brightwell (ankle)

Limited participant: DB Deonte Banks (ankle), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), DB Cor’Dale Flott (ankle), OL Shane Lemieux (groin), OL Marcus McKethan (knee), DL D.J. Davidson (knee), LB Micah McFadden (ankle), OL Evan Neal (ankle), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), TE Darren Waller (groin)

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones among 8 missing practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (neck) headed a massive list of injured players who were unable to practice on Wednesday.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park and all eyes were on quarterback Daniel Jones.

Despite head coach Brian Daboll expressing optimism that Jones could play on Sunday, and DJ sharing similar sentiments, the news was anything but positive.

Jones was unable to practice because his neck was “more sore” than the day prior. Compounding matters, multiple other players also missed practice due to injury, including offensive linemen Andrew Thomas, Matt Peart and John Michael Schmitz, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, tight end Darren Waller and linebacker Azeez Ojulari.

In total, the Giants were able to field just six offensive linemen from their 53-man roster during Wednesday’s practice.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: QB Daniel Jones (neck), LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Matt Peart (shoulder), LB Azeez Ojulari (ankle), LB Micah McFadden (ankle), TE Darren Waller (groin), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee/rest)

Limited participant: DB Deonte Banks (ankle), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), RB Gary Brightwell (ankle), DB Cor’Dale Flott (ankle), OL Shane Lemieux (groin), OL Marcus McKethan (knee)

Giants’ Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz out vs. Dolphins

The New York Giants will be without three offensive linemen in Week 5 against the Dolphins, including LT Andrew Thomas.

The New York Giants take on the Miami Dolphins this Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida and will do so shorthanded once again.

Head coach Brian Daboll revealed prior to practice that left tackle Andrew Thomas, rookie center John Michael Schmitz and reserve guard Shane Lemieux would all remain sidelined.

That was a bad omen and the worst-case scenario proved true as all three were listed as “out” for the Week 5 game.

Meanwhile, running back Saquon Barkley remained limited in practice and will be a game-time decision for the second consecutive week. It remains unlikely that he’ll play.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Dolphins can be found below:

Giants injury report: Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz remain sidelined

New York Giants LT Andrew Thomas and rookie OL John Michael Schmitz remain sidelined in practice and appear unlikely to play in Week 5.

The New York Giants took the field for their second of three practices leading up to Saturday’s departure for Florida.

There was hope that both left tackle Andrew Thomas and rookie center John Michael Schmitz would return to the field but that did not happen. Instead, head coach Brian Daboll revealed that nothing would change from the day prior.

That likely means no Thomas, JMS or reserve Shane Lemieux for the Giants on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

It also wasn’t entirely accurate as linebacker Micah McFadden was added with an ankle injury.

Running back Saquon Barkley was once again limited but he, too, remains uncertain for the Week 5 game.

The Giants’ Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Shane Lemieux (groin)

Limited participant: LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (knee), OL Evan Neal (hand/ankle), OL Marcus McKethan (knee), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and RB Gary Brightwell (ankle), LB Micah McFadden (ankle)

Micah McFadden: Giants defense must ‘trust the process’

The New York Giants defense is underperforming through three weeks but LB Micah McFadden says they must trust the process.

The New York Giants fell to 1-2 after a 30-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on the road last Thursday night. The result was not a surprise.

What was a surprise was the fashion in which they did it. They were undisciplined and sloppy and didn’t play with a lot of intelligence or passion.

That was illustrated by their performance on defense. They missed tackle after tackle — especially in third and long situations — that allowed the 49ers to roll over them with relative ease.

Inside linebacker Micah McFadden, who led the Giants with 10 total tackles, explained to the media this week what happened.

“There are a lot of things that go into a third down game plan and the missed tackles last game contributed to it and there are always going to be guys who mess up the assignment or the responsibility, but I think it’s a combination of things and everybody in the building is working real hard to get all those little mistakes corrected so that we can improve and be a better team moving forward,” he told reporters during a Monday Zoom call.

The Giants were playing on just three days rest after their 31-28 comeback win over the Cardinals in Arizona that Sunday afternoon. They did not have a full-contact practice during the week as a result. Some have suggested that contributed to the Giants getting manhandled by a more physical team in San Francisco.

McFadden didn’t totally disagree but is willing to “trust the process.”

“I think everybody likes the routine and having that set schedule and kind of knowing what to expect throughout the day and getting the normal practice schedule in, but there are times when you have to adjust and last week was one of those times,” McFadden said.

“I think it’s just about staying the course and yeah, like you said, just trusting the process and believing in what we are doing. There are no complaints or pointing fingers or worrying about the schedule and what we have to do moving forward, but I think that’s what it’s going to come down to, is just trusting the process. I think we are excited to be in a week like this.”

Baldy Breakdown: Giants’ Micah McFadden impresses with fast recognition

Brian Baldinger was impressed with the play of New York Giants LB Micah McFadden in Week 3, praising his fast recognition of plays.

The New York Giants fell to the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, on Thursday night in a game that was even less pretty than the score indicates.

Injuries were once again the major takeaway, but not far behind that was shoddy offensive line plan and horrendous tackling by the defense. Upwards of 16 tackles were missed on the night and everyone on the team was guilty.

Micah McFadden was among those who missed a tackle or two. However, the second-year linebacker balanced that out with strong play and more tackles made than missed. He finished the night with a team-leading 10 tackles, nine of which were solo and four for a loss.

Retired offensive lineman and current NFL analyst, Brian Baldinger, broke down McFadden’s play and came away impressed with the speed of his recognition.

“His recognition (sic) is as far as you can possibly get,” Baldinger said. “He had a good game.”

Baldinger was far less impressed with the amount of use rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt saw against the 49ers. A week removed from the speedster having a huge impact on the game, the Giants targeted Hyatt a grand total of zero times.

“They don’t throw to him one time in a game when they needed a big play?” Baldinger questioned. “Seems pretty bizarre in the game plan to me.”

There were quite a few things about Thursday night’s approach that raised some eyebrows. Hyatt not seeing a single target is just one of them.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 30-12 loss to 49ers

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ Thursday Night Football loss to the San Francisco 49ers?

The New York Giants dropped to 1-2 on the season following a 30-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on Thursday night.

It was another ugly prime-time showing for the Giants, whose schedule isn’t going to let up any time soon. They now have 10 days of rest before a Week 4 battle with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the Week 3 loss? Let’s take a look.

Studs and duds from Giants’ Week 3 loss vs. 49ers

Here’s a look at the studs and duds (and studly duds) from a 30-12 loss for the New York Giants against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3.

The New York Giants fell to the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, on Thursday night, dropping their record to 1-2 on the season. It was another ugly showing and the injury bug bit hard, so things look murky for the team moving forward.

There was a lot more bad than good on the night, so the next 10-plus days will be a bit rough for the Giants and their fans. National media is not going to take it easy.

Here’s a look at some studs and duds (and studly duds) from the game.

Giants again fall flat in prime time as 49ers dominate, 30-12

Prime time struggles continued for the New York Giants, who fell to the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, on Thursday night.

The New York Giants faced off against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Thursday night.

It was the Giants’ second nationally-televised night game in the first three weeks of the young season. They have two more night games scheduled over the next three weeks.

The Giants played the game without star running back Saquon Barkley (ankle), starting left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring), starting left guard Ben Bredeson (concussion) and outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari (hamstring).

Giants vs. 49ers Player of the Game: Micah McFadden

The New York Giants were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, and linebacker Micah McFadden is our Player of the Game.

The New York Giants were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, on Thursday Night Football.

The Giants were outmatched in this contest and they now fall to 1-2 on the season. San Francisco’s dominance in the trenches was too much to handle for Big Blue and they suffered greatly all night long.

However, one silver lining was the stellar play of Micah McFadden, who was the player of the game on the night.

The second-year linebacker has really come into his own as the starting inside linebacker for this team. He was all over the field on Thursday, recording 10 total tackles, nine of them being solo tackles.

While the run defense on the night was not great, McFadden did his best to fill in running lanes and stop Christian McCaffery from getting additional yards. His ability to tackle one-on-one and in the open field was very impactful and should help as the season goes on.

The former Hoosier star also stacked four tackles for loss as he continuously helped the Giants get on the right side of the sticks defensively.

That’s not to say he didn’t miss some tackles, however. He did and it was a team-wide problem in Week 3.

McFadden’s coverage on running backs was also solid as he assisted in the Giants holding McCaffery to only 34 receiving yards.
