Northwestern vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

Force Northwestern to turn the ball over and everything unravels from there.

This is a better Wildcat team than the 2021 version, but all the strides made on offense have been offset by the seven giveaways over the last two weeks that led to a late gack against Duke and an unforgivable home loss to Southern Illinois.

That’s where the focus is – Northwestern is 1-11 since 2018 when turning it over two or more times – but the defense hasn’t done its part to pick up the slack. The pass defense has been awful – the worst in the Big Ten – and the third down stops aren’t happening.

Miami has forced six takeaways so far, has been great against the run, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Northwestern Will Win

Yeah, the RedHawk run defense has been statistically fantastic because everyone is spending so much time throwing it.

Miami allowed 300-yard passing games to Kentucky and Cincinnati, and now it’s Ryan Hilinski’s turn to have some fun.

The three interceptions over the last two games weren’t great, but they shouldn’t have been enough to cause the collapses. He’s hitting 64% of his throws, averages 320 yards per game, and he’ll go off on the MU secondary.

Miami’s running game isn’t good enough, the offense doesn’t have the pop to get back in the game if the Wildcats get up early, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The turnovers. If Northwestern can chill those out, it wins without much of a problem. If it gives it away a few times, the veteran RedHawks will keep this close.

The Wildcats will start to rely more on the running game as long as the fumbles aren’t showing up again. There will be enough of an offensive balance to keep everything moving, but it’s Northwestern. Nothing is easy.

Cincinnati vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks have the run defense to make this interesting.

The secondary has had its problems, but the run D has allowed just 1.7 yards per carry and 90 yards in all. Stuffing Robert Morris was expected, but it also held down Kentucky.

Cincinnati is getting the passing attack going, but it’s the ground game that took over against Kennesaw State and did a decent job of keeping up against Arkansas.

The Bearcats are struggling defensively on third downs, the 20 penalties are way too many, and they’re not controlling the clock. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The passing game worked great against Arkansas, and Ben Bryant was razor-sharp last week against Kennesaw State.

The Bearcats will try to run, but they’ll have way too much success moving the chains through the air.

Miami University might be doing a good job on the defensive front, but it’s giving up too many completed passes – Kentucky’s Will Levis had no problems.

Combine that with MU’s problems on special team and the lack of a downfield passing game, and …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Bearcats will once again take down the rival.

15 straight going back to 2005. That’s what it has been for Cincinnati over Miami University, and it’ll be 16 in a row with a good day from the passing game and a +2 turnover margin to pull away.

Miami University vs Robert Morris Game Preview

Why Robert Morris Will Win

The Colonials did a nice job of holding firm time and again in the 22-20 loss to Dayton. They gave up three field goals, and hung around even after the offense stalled early in the second half.

They had too many first game issues – ten penalties and the timing wasn’t there – but the D didn’t allow the Flyers to convert on a third down try.

Miami struggled on third down in the 37-13 loss to Kentucky. The offense didn’t click, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks should be able to run as much as they want to.

The passing game is the relative star of the offense, but the ground game that made a nice push for 111 yards against UK should blast away at will on the Robert Morris defensive front.

There won’t be any semblance of a Colonial ground game – RMU ran for 30 yards against Dayton, and Miami held Kentucky to 50 yards and under two yards per carry.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will open up the offense a bit with good balance, a few downfield plays, and good drives with touchdowns, unlike the field goals Robert Morris allowed last week.

The Colonial defense will be solid enough in the middle of the game to keep this from being a total wipeout, but the offense won’t do enough to help the cause.

MAC Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

MAC preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

One thing is for sure – someone will come out of nowhere and become a player.

Northern Illinois went from worst-to-first last season, and it’ll be another team that screws up all of the predictions and projections this year as it all comes together for …

Akron? That would be the biggest shocker.

Bowling Green? That’s more likely, but still a big stretch.

That’s what makes the MAC so much fun – it’s unpredictable in some ways, but the stars still usually show up.

The problem is the uneven level of the divisions. Unlike other conferences, the MAC won’t go to a no-division format – at least not yet – and in the preseason predictions, the West is far, far stronger than the East.

Those are the breaks in the crazy league, and again, there’s always a team that rises up to make everything more interesting. Here are the 2022 predictions for every MAC game.

Miami University RedHawks Preview 2022

Miami University needs to start getting at least a little bit of respect as a MAC power under Chuck Martin.

It took a long while to get to this point, but the program is here after winning the MAC Championship in 2019 as a part of a nice run of three straight winning seasons.

There’s nothing flashy about what the RedHawks do – no one seemed to notice the high-powered passing season – and they haven’t come up with the big, splashy non-conference wins like some of the other key teams in the conferences pull off – getting whacked by Cincinnati all the time hurts and getting dropped by Ohio State 76-5 in 2019 didn’t help – but they take care of what they need to.

Four of last year’s six losses came by a total of nine points on the way to a bowl win over North Texas, and this year’s version has the potential to be even stronger.

The offense should be among the most efficient in the MAC, the defense loaded up with a slew of new guys, and it should be a fourth straight winning season.

And maybe a second MAC title in four seasons will make a splash.

Miami University RedHawks Preview 2022: Offense

Where did this come from? It was Air RedHawk with one of the nation’s best passing games for an offense that averaged 423 yards and 30 points per game. The O line was great at keeping defenses out of the backfield, but the running game wasn’t just okay.

Brett Gabbert bombed away for 26 touchdowns for a passing game that rolled up over 3,600 yards and 32 touchdowns with just eight picks. Backup AJ Meyer stepped in and threw for almost 1,000 yards with six picks, but he’s in the transfer portal.

Star receiver Jack Sorenson is done, but 48-catch veteran Mac Hippenhammer is back along with downfield threat tight end Jack Coldiron.

The veteran offensive line was great in pass protection, but now it has to blast away a bit more. Four starters are back to a group that allowed just 21 sacks and was tenth in the nation in fewest tackles for loss given up.

The four freshman backs from last year – and sophomore Tyre Shelton – are back. Keyon Mozee, Kevin Davis, Kenny Tracy, and Shelton combined for well over 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns. The O only averaged over five yards per carry twice.

Miami University RedHawks Preview 2022: Defense

There’s a little work to do on a defense that loses a whole slew of key parts. Leading tackler Ivan Pace if off to Cincinnati and star pass rusher Kameron Butler is taking off for Virginia. The defense finished second in the conference in scoring D and is getting a ton of help, but …

Butler is off, leading sacker Lonnie Phelps is gone to Kansas, and Dominique Robinson and Ben Kimpler are done, too. Even so, the defensive tackles should be strong enough to form a good rotation – Austin Ertl and Anthony Collier are solid veterans – and on the way is Corey Suttle from Iowa State for one of the end jobs.

Trying to step in for Pace in the middle of the linebacking corps is Ty Wise from Indiana, and second-leading tackler Matthew Salopek will play a sort of hybrid defensive back and linebacker.

The secondary gave up a few too many yards in high-scoring battles, and now stepping in to help is Nolan Johnson from East Carolina at one corner to work on the other side of leading pickoff guy John Saunders. Michael Dowell is coming in from Michigan State at safety.

It’s the MAC. It’s the conference where worst-to-first is the norm, with 2020 winless Northern Illinois winning the MAC championship in 2021, everyone can beat anyone else, and Toledo will end up somewhere in the middle of it all.

It’s about as settled as the league has been in a long time with the strength still in the West, Buffalo about to be better in the East, and with Akron and Bowling Green still questionable.

Again, though, it’s the MAC. The Zips or Falcons could end up in Detroit in January playing for the title.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Report: Miami to try and hire Mario Cristobal away from Oregon Ducks

A new report shows that Miami is going to attempt to hire Mario Cristobal away from Oregon in the coming days.

A new report came out from The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson that shows that the University of Miami is intending to make a push to hire Oregon Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal in the coming days.

That report has been confirmed by The Oregonian’s John Canzano, who says a source told him that The U is “going after Mario.”

While this is the first time that we’ve seen an actual report on the matter, the idea that Miami wants to hire Cristobal is not new in the slightest. Cristobal is from the Miami area, and he went to school there, winning a pair of championships with the Hurricanes.

Miami is currently without an Athletic Director, and they technically haven’t even fired their current coach. However, it is being made clear that they will attempt to lure Cristobal away from Eugene and try to get him down to Florida.

The Ducks play in the Pac-12 Championship Game against Utah on Friday night, so you can assume that all of Cristobal’s attention is focused there. However, after that game is over, we may hear more about Oregon’s guy taking a call from boosters in Miami. It seems like a long shot that he would leave a coveted program to rebuild in the ACC, but there is a non-zero chance it happens. Stay tuned.

Miami University vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The passing attack has been solid after struggling against Cincinnati in the season opener, but the ground attack is the difference-maker. Running against LIU was no big whoop, but controlling the ground game against Central Michigan was a big deal in last week’s 28-17 win.

Eastern Michigan is a disaster against the run.

Normally strong defensively, the Eagles have been hit for over 200 yards on the ground in three of the last four games with a mediocre Texas State the outlier.
