USC changes NIL policy, will now work without one hand tied behind its back

USC’s NIL approach will now be bolder and more expansive, something Lincoln Riley alluded to earlier this week.

Since the advent of NIL, the NCAA displayed a flexible approach in defining permissible activities. College programs such as USC received general guidelines and were tasked with interpreting how to operate within this emerging landscape, leaving room for varied interpretations.

The primary safeguard in place was to prevent programs from luring potential student-athletes to their school by offering money or benefits from NIL as an incentive. That was the clear guideline: NIL could not be used as an inducement to have players join a program; no pay for play. The types of collective deals and when they could be provided varied from program to program.

Regarding the interpretation of NIL guidelines, some schools opted for a literal approach, maintaining a conservative stance toward collectives working with high school and college prospects. In contrast, institutions such as Tennessee, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Miami adopted a more liberal and proactive approach by fostering collaborative relationships with collectives.

Earlier this week, Trojans Wire reported Lincoln Riley’s comments that the Trojans’ collective strategy has “taken some monster leaps” since he arrived at USC.

“You have to have it,” Riley explained. “Last year was great outside of the whole collective world. Our guys were able to obviously, being in L.A., get more outside deals than anybody in the country, which is awesome, but we need the support to be right there with it too from our donors and from our collectives. That has taken some massive, massive jumps here in the last several months as our people get educated on what that really means, but it’s got to continue.”

This afternoon, Fight On Rusty (Arrogant Nation on X, formerly known as Twitter) shared a letter from the House of Victory (HOV), one of USC’s donor collectives. The letter explains that due to its NIL policy, “House of Victory has only provided NIL opportunities to current student athletes enrolled at USC.”

There’s more from the House of Victory note:

“Last month, Tennessee filed a lawsuit against the NCAA resulting in a federal judge granting an injunction blocking the NCAA from enforcing their NIL rules around recruiting.

“Consequently, House of Victory ahs now received full clearance from USC to support recruits with paid NIL opportunities before they enroll at USC.”

Prior to a recent policy shift, programs with a more flexible interpretation of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) guidelines had a significant financial advantage over programs such as USC in recruiting. USC’s recent impressive haul of defensive recruits could mark the beginning of a new era for the program, potentially leveling the playing field in recruiting.

Five-star defensive end Shemar Stewart will commit to Georgia, Texas A&M or Miami. Stewart has set his commitment date for Feb. 2, 2022. The elite defensive end plans to commit at 1:30 p.m. EST.

Shemar Stewart is one of the best uncommitted prospects in his class. The five-star defensive end plays high school football for Monsignor Pace in Opa Locka, Florida. Stewart is the nation’s No. 10 recruit for the class of 2022. He is the country’s No. 3 defensive lineman and the top recruit in talent-rich Florida.

The 6-foot-6, 272-pound senior has the size to play right away in major college football. Stewart is explosive off the line of scrimmage and possesses good bend, a key attribute for pass rushing defensive ends.

Stewart’s impactful in run defense and projects as an edge player. He’ll fit in as a 4-3 defensive end or a 3-4 outside linebacker for UGA, Miami, or Texas A&M. Stewart has the size to shift inside at the college level, especially in obvious passing situations.

Stewart shows an impressive ability to disengage from blocks. He lives in the opposing backfield and has a knack for forcing fumbles. Stewart’s tape is elite and shows why he is rated as a five-star recruit.

The Monsignor Pace standout is projected to sign with Texas A&M, but Georgia and Miami will not give up without a fight. Stewart has recently visited UGA and Miami.

Four-star WR Romello Brinson releases his top five

Four-star WR Romelllo Brinson puts the Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and more into his top five. He excluded Florida.

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top schools for Miami Northwestern’s Romello Brinson. Brinson is a four-star receiver in the class of 2021 and is six feet, two inches tall. He weighs 185 pounds.

Brinson plays against some of the country’s elite high school competition in Florida. He was originally committed to the Miami Hurricanes, but de-committed late last year.

Brinson released his list of top schools via Twitter. He puts Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Miami, and Texas A&M in his top five. He trimmed the Florida Gators off his initial list of top schools. Brinson unofficially visited both Georgia and LSU before the quarantine.

The four-star receiver is a product of the renowned Miami Northwestern High School, which has produced numerous NFL and college talents. One of their latest NFL Draft picks is former Georgia Bulldog and Jim Thorpe Award winner DeAndre Baker.

Brinson has lots of time to decide among his top schools. Recruits are committing earlier this year, so fans should anticipate a good amount of de-commitments later in the recruiting cycle.

UGA’s recruiting class of 2021 is heating up. Kirby Smart and his staff are offering scholarships to various members of the class and have secured seven commitments thus far.

Four-star WR Jacorey Brooks makes commitment

Four-star wide receiver Jacorey Brooks put the Georgia Bulldogs in his top seven schools, but has committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Four-star wide receiver Jacorey Brooks put the Georgia Bulldogs in his top seven schools, but it wasn’t enough. Brooks is now committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Brooks is a top-ten receiver in the class of 2021. He plays for Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, Florida.

Brooks placed Florida State, Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia, Miami, Alabama, and Florida in his top schools. He committed to Alabama via Twitter:

Georgia football is recruiting Florida as hard as ever in recent seasons. Despite this shortcoming, it is yet example that Florida’s major powerhouse programs haven’t been recruiting at an elite level in recent seasons. Georgia, Clemson, and Alabama have been there to pick up the slack. The Florida Gators have been doing better since Dan Mullen took over.

Georgia currently has a WR signee in the class of 2020 from the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area in Marcus Rosemy. Rosemy is expected to compete for a starting receiver role.

Four-star WR Bralon Brown puts Georgia, Georgia Tech in top five

Will Georgia and Georgia Tech be in more recruiting battles over the upcoming seasons? Four-star WR Bralon Brown names his top five.

Will the Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets be in more recruiting battles over the upcoming seasons? Georgia Tech’s second year coach Geoff Collins is a better recruiter than previous coach Paul Johnson, who ran the triple option offense. With all the in-state talent in the Peach State, isn’t it inevitable for the two teams to clash more over the next decade?

The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets are set up to fight over 2021 four-star wide receiver Bralon Brown. Brown is a 6-2 target, who plays high school football at Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Florida.

Brown put both schools in his top five, which he announced via his Twitter account:

Brown lists Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Miami, and Penn State in his top schools. He announced his top five despite the present dead period in recruiting.

Brown would be a great addition to Georgia’s class of 2021. Kirby Smart and his staff are working to secure another elite recruiting class, but UGA currently has only three commitments.

Georgia is continuing to recruit the Sunshine State harder than ever. It’ll be interesting to see if Georgia Tech can begin to hamper UGA’s recruiting more, or if the Dawgs will continue to dominate.

Georgia football offers scholarship to four-star 2021 Miami commit

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to four-star offensive guard Laurence Seymore, a 2021 Miami Hurricanes commitment.

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to Laurence Seymore, a 2021 Miami Hurricanes commitment. Kirby Smart and Matt Luke are showing interest in Seymore, who is a four-star offensive guard.

Seymore plays high school football at Miami Central High School. Georgia has already offered his high school teammate, who is a four-star running back, Amari Daniels. He’s been committed to Miami for almost two years now. Laurence Seymore’s original commitment to the Hurricanes came on March 31st, 2018.

That long commitment won’t stop the Dawgs from offering him a scholarship. Seymore was excited to receive an offer from the University of Georgia:

Seymore plays in a difficult division of high school football and will be battle tested when he heads off to college. Miami Central has produced numerous NFL players including Vikings RB Dalvin Cook, Cincinnati OG John Miller, and Atlanta RB Devonta Freeman.

Seymore is 6’1.5″, 290 lbs, so he doesn’t have ideal height. He may continue to grow as he is only a junior in high school.

There are two reasons why UGA has a decent shot at Seymore:

  1. The recent trend of elite Florida talent leaving the state for Georgia, Clemson, and Alabama.
  2. The vast amount of de-commitments Miami has received over the past couple recruiting classes.

We’ll keep you updated on his recruiting progress.
