Jets react to ‘good ol’ (expletive) whooping’ dealt by Dolphins

Jets players and coaches react to the nightmare that was Week 15’s 30-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

There are no two ways about it: the Jets got ripped big time by the Miami Dolphins in Week 15, losing 30-0 and watching their playoff hopes officially end after wins by the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans. The players were embarrassed and rightfully so. The offense had no juice and the defense struggled mostly all day, save for a few plays here and there.

After the game, some players spoke with the media and expressed their frustrations with not only the game but the way the season has gone, a season that began with immense promise that will end without a playoff appearance for the 13th consecutive season.

Here are some of the Jets’ reactions following Sunday’s nightmare.

Zach Wilson out with head injury, Trevor Siemian in at quarterback

Zach Wilson is out with a head injury.

Jets quarterback Zach Wilson went to the locker room just before halftime with what the team called a case of dehydration. Trevor Siemian came into the game at the end of the second quarter and was started the third quarter as Wilson remains out.

Early in the third quarter, CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported Wilson was ruled out with a head injury. He is not being evaluated for a concussion but he is done for the day. Siemian will be in the rest of the way.

With Wilson out, the Jets have Siemian and Brett Rypien as the emergency third quarterback if need be — if Siemian were to get injured. Wilson took a beating in the first quarter. He was sacked four times and lost a fumble as the Jets went into the locker room down 24-0 and totaled negative-10 passing yards in the first half.

Jets vs. Dolphins inactives: Jets will not see Tyreek Hill

The Jets will not see Tyreek Hill Sunday as he is out with an ankle injury.

The Jets announced their inactives for Week 15 against the Miami Dolphins but the big story is from the other sideline. The Dolphins will be without their best offensive weapon.

Tyreek Hill will not play Sunday due to an injured ankle. He tried testing his ankle in pregame after missing practice all week but his ankle clearly isn’t where the team would like it to be. The Jets catch a huge break.

In fact, the Dolphins have a few key players inactive Sunday including safety Jevon Holland, cornerback Xavien Howard and offensive lineman Robert Hunt.

The rest of Miami’s inactive players are QB Skylar Thompson (emergency third quarterback) and LB Jason Pierre-Paul.

For the Jets, no surprises with their inactives. Jason Brownlee was already ruled out and Carter Warren was doubtful. Max Mitchell is also out meaning the Jets will start their 11th different offensive line combination in their 14th game this season. Billy Turner will start at right tackle.

Also inactive for the Jets are LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball, DE Carl Lawson, CB Bryce Hall and QB Brett Rypien (emergency third quarterback).

Jets elimination scenarios simplified after Bengals defeat Vikings

The Bengals’ overtime win Saturday pushed the Jets ever so closer to seeing their playoff hopes officially end.

Believe it or not, what little hope the Jets have at making the playoffs just got even smaller Saturday afternoon. The Jets didn’t get the help they might have been hoping for from the Minnesota Vikings Saturday afternoon after the Cincinnati Bengals overcame a 14-3 deficit to win 27-24 in overtime. The win puts the Bengals at 8-6 and into the AFC’s No. 6 seed in the playoff picture.

The win also helped simplify the Jets’ playoff elimination scenarios for Week 15. One of the ways the Jets could be knocked out was a loss plus a Bills win plus a Bengals win or tie. With the Bengals taking care of business, now only a loss to Miami and a Buffalo win over Dallas officially ends any playoff hopes for the Jets.

Keep in mind that every elimination scenario for the Jets requires a loss, so if New York can pull the upset Sunday, they will be alive heading into Week 16 when they host the Washington Commanders.

Zach Wilson to be No. 3 quarterback behind Tim Boyle, Trevor Siemian

Zach Wilson to be No. 3 quarterback behind Tim Boyle, Trevor Siemian

It’s deja vu for the New York Jets. Zach Wilson has been demoted to the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, just like this time last year. That is what head coach Robert Saleh told reporters Monday as the team will start Tim Boyle against the Dolphins Friday. Trevor Siemian will be brought up to the active roster and serve as the immediate backup to Boyle.

Saleh said all three quarterbacks will be active against the Dolphins. To clarify, the Jets will utilize the new rule regarding a third quarterback on gameday. Wilson will be inactive but will serve as the emergency third quarterback. Wilson will dress and can play if both Boyle and Siemian get hurt, but he will not count against the 48-man gameday roster.

Saleh said he wanted to “just give (Boyle) an opportunity. He is a different style of quarterback, so really it was just to give him an opportunity to see if we can do something with the offense.”

Boyle replaced Wilson in the third quarter of Sunday’s 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Boyle went 7/14 for 33 yards with an interception. Wilson finished 7/15 for 81 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Interestingly, this is the second year in a row the Jets are starting a new quarterback going into Week 12. Last year, it was Mike White against the Chicago Bears. This year, it’ll be Boyle, who played in Chicago last year, going against the Dolphins.

Saleh said Wilson is fine about the news. “He has come a long way from a year ago,” Saleh said. “I think we all agree obviously we wish it was better for him, we wish we all could have better for him. Like I have said, it is not a one person thing, but just to see if we could get something going, but he was good.”

There was no thought to releasing Wilson, Saleh noted. If the Jets were to release Wilson, they would eat about $15 million in dead money this year and $5.7 million in dead money for 2024. The Jets would lose about $5.4 million in 2023 cap space but gain about $5 million in 2024 cap space. Wilson is due a roster bonus of about $4.4 million by training camp and the Jets have to decide on his fifth-year option by May, an option they almost certainly will decline.

Saleh still had good things to say about Wilson and tried to emphasize that he doesn’t think Wilson has been a failure in the NFL.

“It is a 53-man roster, it’s an all 11 sport when you are looking at the offensive side of the ball and same with coaches,” Saleh said. “Have things gone the exact way we have been wanted them to? No. I wouldn’t look at it as a failure, I look at it as more of a series of unfortunate events. I stand strong on the belief that Zach is going to have a really good career in this League. He has got tremendous work ethic, he has gotten a lot better over the course of the last year. He definitely has the arm talent, he is only 24, he just turned 24. He has a positive outlook and he just needs to continue to focus on his game and find ways to get better and continue to learn about fronts and coverages and how to play the game a little bit faster. I still believe he is going to have a good career.”

Jets bench Zach Wilson, will start Tim Boyle in Week 12 vs. Dolphins

Tim Boyle to start Week 12 vs. Dolphins

Zach Wilson has officially been benched. The Jets will start Tim Boyle at quarterback Friday against the Miami Dolphins.

Wilson was benched during Sunday’s 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills after going just 7-for-15 for 81 yards. He didn’t complete a single pass to a wide receiver during the game.

Boyle replaced Wilson late in the third quarter. He finished 7/14 for 33 yards. Friday will mark Boyle’s first start since 2021 when he was with the Detroit Lions. Boyle started three games that year and also appeared in one game last season for the Bears.

This is the second year in a row the Jets benched Wilson and started a different quarterback going into Week 12. Last year, it was Mike White against the Bears. This year, it’ll be Boyle against the Dolphins.

This likely signals the end of an era in New York for the former No. 2 overall pick. If so, he’ll finish with an 11-20 record as the starting quarterback with 21 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

It remains to be seen what the Jets do with Wilson for the immediate future but it’s not out of the question he gets demoted to No. 3m as he did last year behind White and Joe Flacco. Trevor Siemian is the No. 3 at the moment on the practice squad. He could be brought up to the active roster to be the backup.

Quinnen Williams is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. Dolphins

Quinnen Williams had a career day in the Jets’ 20-3 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.

Quinnen Williams had a career day in the Jets’ 20-3 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.

Williams did a little bit of everything for the Jets defense, recording seven tackles, 1.5 sacs, one forced fumble, two pass defenses and three quarterback hits. For leading the Jets’ defense against Ryan Fitzpatrick and company, he is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game for Week 12.

Williams flustered Fitzpatrick all game long and the Dolphins offensive line had no answer for him. Williams was constantly in the backfield, a theme this season as the second-year player out of Alabama continues to live up to expectations.

Williams has recorded at least half a sack in three of his last four games, moving his total to five on the year. He was never a big sacks guy at Alabama, as the most he recorded in one season was eight. However, Williams is starting to develop into a legit pass rusher.

The Jets were wise to hold onto Williams at the trade deadline. There were rumors that he could possibly get dealt, but Joe Douglas quickly shut those rumors down by making him unavailable.

Now it looks like Williams will be a big part of the Jets’ future, as most of the roster will be turned over after this season. As the Jets’ record continues to head in the wrong direction, at least they can count on Williams each week to deliver a big performance.

Robby Anderson is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. Dolphins

It wasn’t the most memorable performance for the Jets offense in 22-21 win over the Dolphins, but for Robby Anderson it was one of his better days.

Sunday’s 22-21 win over the Dolphins wasn’t the most memorable performance for the Jets offense, but for Robby Anderson it was one of his better days.

Anderson led the way for the Jets with seven catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. For his performance, Anderson is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game for Week 14 of the regular season.

Anderson said earlier in the week that he feels like he is a No. 1 wide receiver when given the opportunity to make plays. Well, Sam Darnold was certainly looking his way, as the quarterback targeted his top wideout 11 times in the game.

The 26-year-old wideout could’ve had an even bigger game if Darnold didn’t overthrow him on a couple of balls. However, this is a confidence booster for Anderson, as he has put together back-to-back 100 yard receiving games for the first time this season and only the second time in his career.

Darnold and Anderson have had a hard time getting on the same page this season. Anderson has not been able to get the football from Darnold as much as he’d like, but over the last three games Anderson has 18 catches for 303 yards.

For Anderson, he needs to end the season strong with his contract up at the end of the year. He is looking to cash in on a nice payday and he’ll need to keep playing well if he wants the Jets or any other team to give him a big contract.

Jets favored in redemption game vs. Dolphins

As it stands the Jets are slated as 5.5-point favorites heading into Sunday, per BetMGM.

The last time the Jets faced Miami, they were beaten by an AFC East rival that had yet to record a win. This time, New York owns the home field advantage and oddsmakers have indicated that’s all the insurance they need.

New York is coming off a head-scratching loss to the Bengals. Like the Dolphins earlier this year, Cincinnatti was winless before playing the Jets.

Miami, however, is coming off an impressive victory over the Eagles in Week 13. The Dolphins’ 37-31 upset was still not enough to earn them the betting nod this week against a team they have already defeated, though.

As it stands the Jets are slated as 5.5-point favorites heading into Sunday, per BetMGM. Gang Green holds a money line of -239, sits at -110 in the spread and the over-under is set at 44.5 total points.

Miami, as 5.5-point underdogs, possesses a money line of +195 and is -110 against the spread.

Oddsmakers seem to believe Sunday’s AFC East rivalry won’t be a display of offensive genius, as the under is favored at -121.

As to where each team sits in the division, the Jets are third with a 4-8 record. The Dolphins are close behind at 3-9 after losing their first seven contests.

Gang Green will host Miami on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and, if the odds indicate anything, the two will be splitting this season’s share of matchups.
