Saints have a better record at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium than the Falcons

Atlanta spent a lot of money building Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but the Saints have a better record there than the Falcons do on their own home turf:

Atlanta spent a lot of money building Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Atlanta Falcons to play their home games, but it’s their rivals who have a better record there. Since the venue opened for the 2017 season, the New Orleans Saints have gone 5-2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium — a stunning win percentage of .714.

Those Saints victories included a 43-37 thriller in overtime in 2018 and a Thanksgiving Day rout in 2019. Last season’s loss was their first since the arena’s inaugural season.

Now compare it to the Falcons’ home record, which is one of the NFL’s worst since 2017: 27-32. That’s a win percentage of just .457. Only eight teams have won fewer home games since Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened its doors.

The next chapter in this long-running rivalry will be written on Sunday, when the Saints and Falcons kick off in Week 4. They’re both looking to keep pace in the NFC South title race but each team is dealing with similar troubles. Offensive line injuries have struck New Orleans (Erik McCoy is having sports hernia surgery, sidelining him for six to eight weeks) as well as Atlanta (the Falcons already put Drew Dalman on injured reserve and Kaleb McGary could be next). Whoever has the next man up playing well just might win the day.

Falcons officials see Week 3 matchup vs. Chiefs as most important game ever at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

#Falcons officials are said to view Atlanta’s Week 3 matchup against the #Chiefs as the most important in Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s history

The Kansas City Chiefs will have a target on their backs all season as defending Super Bowl champions, and according to a report from Adam Schefter, their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons might have even more edge than usual.

On Sunday morning, Schefter tweeted that some Falcons officials view Atlanta’s Week 3 tilt against the Chiefs as the most important game in the history of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is in its eighth season.

Though it didn’t seem that a formal poll had been conducted, Schefter’s report was an early indication that the Falcons’ effort will be at an all-time high when Atlanta faces Kansas City on Sunday Night Football.

Every team that goes against the Chiefs knows that a win over the defending champions could make or break their seasons, and Atlanta will have a home-field advantage in their effort to knock off Kansas City in Week 3.

Expect to see both teams play with maximum effort on Sunday night as they look to establish themselves early in the season.

Falcons to open Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof for SNF game vs. Chiefs

Falcons to open Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof for prime-time matchup vs. the Chiefs

The Atlanta Falcons don’t generally open the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium unless it’s a special occasion, however, Sunday night’s matchup against the Kanas City Chiefs meets the requirements. The defending Super Bowl champions are 2-0 this season and will look to stay undefeated when they come to Atlanta in Week 3.

The Falcons defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football thanks to a highly improbable fourth-quarter comeback orchestrated by Kirk Cousins and the offense. Now, the team must attempt to win back-to-back games with the entire country watching (including the Swifties).

With all that pressure, Atlanta could probably use some air. According to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium social media account, the Falcons will drop the stadium top for Week 3.

The Falcons are currently three-point underdogs entering Sunday’s game, but they should at least have health on their side. The Chiefs just placed star running back Isiah Pacheco on the injured reserve list. Plus, the team’s top free-agent addition, wide receiver Marquise Brown, will miss the entire season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Sunday night’s matchup kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET inside a roofless Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Don’t forget to get your free hot dogs!

Atlanta urges fans to avoid driving during USMNT/presidential debate doubleheader

There will be a unique double feature in the Georgia capital on Thursday night

There will be plenty of eyes on Atlanta on Thursday night.

The Georgia capital will be home to a unique doubleheader. First, the U.S. men’s national team will face Panama in the Copa América at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Three hours after the USMNT’s 6 p.m. ET kickoff, a very different sort of competition will begin just three miles away at CNN Studios: Joe Biden and Donald Trump will face off in their first of two presidential debates ahead of November’s election.

Naturally, the two events are set to cause something of a traffic apocalypse in a city that is already known for congestion issues.

A statement from the Atlanta Police Department (APD) released this week urged anybody out and about on Thursday to avoid driving if at all possible.

“If you are planning an evening out in Atlanta, for the game, dinner or any other of our offerings, we encourage you to plan ahead and anticipate limited parking and heavier than usual traffic,” the APD said.

“There will be several road closures in the areas surrounding the debate and your route could be impacted. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination and plan for parking spaces to fill quickly.”

The APD then urged people to take MARTA, the city’s train system, or use a ride-share service.

In a statement of its own, MARTA said it would be providing additional rail service on Thursday to accomodate the influx of riders.

The presidential debate will take place in Midtown, with the USMNT-Panama match in Downtown. According to Google Maps, the distance between the two venues is just 2.8 miles.

Argentina goalkeeper Martinez calls Mercedes-Benz Stadium pitch a ‘disaster’

The pitch ‘felt like walking on a stage, as if it was hollow,’ according to Canada’s Kamal Miller

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and head coach Lionel Scaloni sharply criticized the temporary grass pitch at Mercedes-Benz Stadium following their team’s 2-0 win over Canada to kick off the Copa América.

Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez scored in the second half on Thursday night in Atlanta, giving the defending champions a winning start to a special edition of the tournament in the United States.

In order to host Copa games, officials in Atlanta agreed to install a temporary grass surface at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which usually has artificial turf. That switch was made after Saturday’s MLS game between Atlanta United and Houston.

The results, according to Martínez, were far from ideal.

“The state of the pitch was a disaster,” the Aston Villa goalkeeper said. “Very bumpy. We must improve in this aspect, otherwise, Copa América will always appear at a lower level than the European Championship.”

In his post-game press conference, Scaloni echoed the words of his goalkeeper.

“Better that we won, or else it would have appeared as an excuse,” Scaloni said of the field.

“But they knew seven months ago that we’d play here and they changed the field two days ago. It’s not an excuse, but this isn’t a good field. Sincerely, the field is not apt for these players.”

“It felt like walking on a stage, as if it was hollow,” Canadian defender Kamal Miller added.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host just one more game in the Copa América: the U.S. men’s national team’s match against Panama on Thursday.

Prior to that game, the USMNT will also play its Copa América opener on a temporary grass surface when it faces Bolivia on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium to host SEC Championship through 2031

The SEC Championship Game will continue to be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta through the year 2031

Falcons fans who are enjoying Saturday’s SEC Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta can rest easy knowing the conference title matchup won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

The SEC announced earlier this week that the game will continue to be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium through at least the year 2031.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has served as the game site since 2017. The Georgia Bulldogs have played in the SEC Championship game six out of the last seven years. The Bulldogs currently trail the Alabama Crimson Tide, 20-10, late in the third quarter.

Falcons still refuse to put the Saints on their scoreboard

The Falcons still refuse to put the Saints on their scoreboard. It’s Atlanta versus the Visitors on Sunday:

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons renewed their rivalry for the first time this season as they met in Atlanta for Week 12.

The Falcons have continued an old tradition as they refuse to put the Saints’ name on the Mercedes-Benz Stadium scoreboard, instead showing “Visitors.” This rivalry has been heated and petty for years, this is just another feather in that cap. The mind games haven’t done great for the Falcons in the past, as the Saints haven’t lost in Atlanta since the 2017 season.

There is some extra spice to this game as the all-time series is tied for the first time in almost 60 years, with the Saints on a 6-1 stretch. The battle is now for bragging rights as well as the NFC South title.

Falcons’ PA system failed on special intro for Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary

The Falcons’ PA system failed on a special intro for Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary in Sunday’s game with the Saints:

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons met for their Week 12 matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but the Falcons tripped up before the teams took the field. Their public address system appeared to be malfunctioning.

Atlanta advertised this game as a celebration of Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary with dozens of local musicians being featured. As a part of that, they planned to have T.I. lead out the team to the hit song “Bring Em Out” but to their surprise, the microphone failed. They just had to play the song’s instrumentals by itself.

The mics continued to fail as the game started, with the referee unable to share penalties over the system and a pre-recorded national anthem played before kickoff. It’s not a good look, but that’s the Falcons for you:
