Why Memphis Will Win

The passing attack is about as consistent as it gets.

It might not be quite as dominant or explosive as the SMU version, but Seth Henigan will complete over 60% of his passes, the O will come up with over 400 yards with more than 250 through the air, and it’ll keep on coming.

Combine the solid offense with a slew of takeaways – two ore more in six games – and there should be enough stops to hang around with the high-powered Mustangs.

But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why SMU Will Win

Memphis can’t enter the stadium without planning on hanging at least 30 on the board, but this isn’t the type of team that puts up 50 – that’s what it might have to do.

Again, this is a consistent attack that does a little of everything right, but it hasn’t put up a ton of points against the decent defenses.

Granted, SMU isn’t a brick wall defensively, but it’s not awful on third downs and it’s decent at coming up with sacks and generating pressure.

As long as the D can keep Memphis dominating the tempo, the offense that’s hitting close to 500 yards per game should be able to do the rest.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This won’t be the wild and crazy 77-63 shootout the Houston-SMU game was, but it’ll be a back-and-forth fight with both offenses putting up yards in chunks.

The SMU O won’t roll at will, but it’ll take the lead early and keep answering every Tiger score.

Why North Alabama Will Win

Can the Lions at least make this competitive?

The offense will keep taking shots down the field. QB Noah Walters might not be all that accurate, but the passing game averages over 14 yards per completion, there are enough decent receivers to spread it around, and the ground game gets enough to average five yards per carry.

So what’s the problem?

Bowl Projections

Why Memphis Will Win

The North Alabama defense can’t stop much of anything.

There’s no pass rush, the run defense is getting gouged, and teams are exploding in the first half to take control of games early on.

The Memphis running game has been underwhelming for a program that comes up with a whole lot of gashing runs. This is the game to let the backs go off, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Tiger passing game will get going, too.

There will be a few giveaways – Memphis can’t help itself with two turnovers – but it won’t matter. North Alabama will come up with a few points, but Memphis will put this away fast.

Tulsa vs Memphis Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane might be sputtering a bit, but they’ve still got a shot at a bowl game by winning out.

The offense isn’t consistent enough, but the pass defense has been great, the running game is fine, and the team scores when it gets the chance.

For all that Memphis is doing right, it’s in a worse tailspin than Tulsa is with four straight losses thanks to a slew of turnovers, a defense that isn’t coming up with key stops or big plays, and …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Memphis Will Win

The Tulsa offense has stalled.

It ripped through everyone in the early part of the season with a high-octane passing game, but it’s not working with fewer than 160 passing yards in two of the last three games. There weren’t any turnovers against Tulane, but the 11 turnovers in the four games before that were a killer.

Memphis might have crashed against four of the stronger teams in the AAC, but the passing game is still amazing, the firepower isn’t there, and things should be fine as long as there aren’t a slew of turnovers.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis is still throwing well even during the problems, and in this it’ll be about the running game.

3-0 when running 44 times or more, the Tigers are going to pound and pound some more against a Tulsa run defense that’s getting ripped apart by anyone who’s trying.

The Golden Hurricane offense will have its moments, but it won’t be able to keep up.

UCF vs Memphis Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Now we get to find out if UCF can have nice things.

The Knights had the one win they absolutely needed to come up with – taking down Cincinnati 25-21 last week – to help put them at 25 in the first College Football Playoff rankings. Tulane might be ranked higher, but that’s next week.

First they have to get by Memphis. To do that they need to get the ground game rolling right away, the pass defense has to lock down, and they need to stop turning the ball over after giving it up six times in the last two weeks.

They’re 5-0 when they run for 250 yards or more, but they might not have to against Memphis if the passing game works, too. However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Memphis Will Win

Memphis has only allowed more than 200 rushing yards once, and that was in the win over Navy.

Back to the UCF turnovers, they aren’t a big problem but there were only two road games so far this year and the O turned it over seven times.

The four in the loss to East Carolina were part of the problem, but allowing 311 passing yards and a season-most three touchdowns were bigger. The Knight secondary can be picked apart, and Memphis should be able to throw for 300 yards.

However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Tiger defense has only been gouged against the run once, but that’s partly because everyone throws at will on the secondary that gives up 284 yards per game.

Both teams have a few turnover issues, both offenses work, and both will have moments when they seem ready to take control of the game.

When absolutely needed, UCF will get the third down conversions Memphis won’t.

Memphis vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

The Tigers have been so close.

They lost the last two games, but they suffered a late breakdown in the 33-32 loss to Houston, and last week they lost a fun firefight to East Carolina. On the plus side, the passing game has kicked in.

They didn’t have to use it too much in the wins over Temple and North Texas, but it rolled for almost 700 yards in the last two weeks and now should go off against a not-quite-as-great-as-the-stats Tulane secondary.

The Green Wave defense is solid, but there’s no pass rush to worry about. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Tulane Will Win

The Tulane passing game has been amazing, too.

Michael Pratt has been wonderful this year and great over the last two weeks with two straight 320+ yard passing games to go along with an already strong ground attack.

And Memphis can’t stop any of it.

To be fair, the Tigers played Mississippi State, North Carolina, Houston, and East Carolina to skew the stats a bit, but they’re still 127th in the nation in pass defense – and that’s with Navy factored into the mix.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Memphis offense will move, but Tulane will be sharper.

Pratt will be more efficient than Tiger QB Seth Henigan, the defense will be better on key late third downs, and a fun back-and-forth fight will close with the home side controlling the clock on one decent-sized march.

Memphis vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

Everything was going great for Memphis. It was on a roll with a four game winning streak, and it had Houston down 29-13 in the fourth before a monster comeback led to a 33-32 loss.

Even with the disaster, the offense did a good job over the last several weeks, the special teams have been great, and the team is winning the turnover battle.

The Tigers have only turned it over four times this year – there haven’t been multiple giveaways in any game – and the defense is great at generating takeaways.

East Carolina isn’t above turning it over. After the loss to Tulane last week, it’s 0-3 now when giving it up multiple times and 3-0 when it doesn’t.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why East Carolina Will Win

Here comes the Pirate passing game.

East Carolina’s offense isn’t quite as explosive as it should be, but it’s effective enough to be great at keeping the chains moving and it’s averaging well over 300 yards per game.

Memphis doesn’t generate a lick of pressure, and Holton Ahlers is good enough to take advantage of it. Give the veteran time to work, and he’ll be deadly.

On the other side, the Tiger offensive front is struggling to keep defenses out of the backfield, the running game stalls a bit too much, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a blast.

Both offenses will trade big shots, the passing games should work, and the defenses will struggle against the hot quarterbacks.

East Carolina will be a bit better on third downs with two late scoring drives to pull out the thriller.

Houston vs Memphis Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Houston, you feeling okay?

The talent is there, the experience is in place, and there’s no real reason why the team shouldn’t be far better. It’s closer to being 0-5 than it is 5-0, but it’s not like it’s that bad.

The offense is moving the chains without a problem, the defensive front lives in the backfield, and there aren’t a ton of turnover issues.

Memphis doesn’t have any sort of a pass rush, and that’s part of the reason why the secondary is having problems. This is where Clayton Tune and the Houston passing attack have to get going, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Memphis Will Win

The Memphis defense hasn’t been that bad.

Playing Navy, Arkansas State, North Texas, and Temple have something to do with that, but the run D has been strong and outside of the loss to Mississippi State, the secondary is holding up despite all the yards allowed.

And then there are the penalties. Memphis has been flagged 26 times with just ten over the last three games. Houston has doubled that up with a whopping 56 so far coming in a steady stream. For a team that can’t get anything consistently moving, the flags have been brutal.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Just how demoralized is Houston after the brutal loss to Tulane?

Is this when it kicks it all in and gets its season going, or is this when it drops another close game and goes into the tank?

It’s Houston so it’s going to be a much closer game than it needs to be, but the offense will come up with the balance to keep everything moving, and finally the defense will get the big stops needed in the second half to get out alive.

The Memphis offense will keep it close, but it won’t run well enough in the second half.

Memphis vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

The passing game is starting to come together.

It isn’t explosive, and it isn’t anything amazing, and it hasn’t put it together against anyone great, but take the 200+ yards per game over the last three. The emergence of freshman EJ Warner has helped, but it’s the offense as a whole that’s starting to improve.

The O line is doing a great job in pass protection, the other side is strong on third downs, and the pass rush has been among the best in the country so far.

The Memphis offensive line has been a bit iffy and should be under pressure. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Memphis Will Win

The Owl running game isn’t working against anyone halfway decent. The O line can pass protect, but it’s not getting any semblance of a push.

The bigger Temple problem for Temple is turnover margin. The D forced its first takeaways of the season against UMass, and the other side has given it away ten times in four games.

Memphis isn’t screwing up. It has a far, far more effective all-around offense, and it only turned the ball over twice.

The Tigers will likely be +2 in turnover margin, and they probably won’t need it because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The offense has the balance to keep everything moving.

Duke is the only team Temple has faced that can throw a bit, and it got ugly. Memphis won’t have to wing it around, but it’ll get a few deep shots, the ground game will balance things out, and the defense will get by.

Temple will get a few good drives and points, but it won’t keep up.

Memphis vs North Texas Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

The defense might have failed against UNLV, but the offense keeps on going with Austin Aune and the passing game throwing well …

Usually.

The defense is an issue – more about that in a moment – but the offense is great at generating first downs, the points are there, and it’s going to make Memphis keep bombing away to keep up.

The Tigers are a disaster defensively on third downs and they’re getting hammered through the air – and that includes a game against Navy among the three so far – partly because there’s no pass rush for the Mean Green to worry about.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Memphis Will Win

North Texas isn’t exactly a defensive rock, either.

It’s allowing over 500 yards per game, the run defense is getting shoved around, and the secondary is allowing close to 300 yards per game.

Seth Henigan and the Tiger offense have gone for close to 800 passing yards and five touchdowns over the last two weeks, and as long as he gets time to work, he’ll go off on the North Texas secondary.

Memphis will put up yards, and …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers are going to matter.

Memphis might have to push its offense a bit, but it only has one turnover so far, no interceptions, and North Texas has given it away seven times in four games.

The Tigers will be +2 in turnover margin, and they’re not going to need to be with over 500 yards of total offense consistently cranking up the Mean Green D.
