3 Panthers rookies selected in UFL’s 2024 college draft

A trio of Panthers rookies had their UFL rights drafted on Wednesday.

A trio of undrafted Carolina Panthers rookies are (technically) undrafted no more.

The UFL held its college draft on Wednesday, giving some fresh faces a second chance at hearing their names called this offseason. Three of Carolina’s undrafted free-agent signees from the spring got that experience this morning, and they are as follows:

Round Pick (Overall) Team College
WR Jalen Coker 4th No. 25 Memphis Showboats Holy Cross
DT Popo Aumavae 4th No. 27 Arlington Renegades Oregon
C Andrew Raym 6th No. 41 Memphis Showboats Oklahoma

Coker, who many experts pegged as a solid Day 3 prospect in the 2024 NFL draft, is a name that should jump out to many. He certainly jumped out to Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who provided quite the breakdown of the intriguing 6-foot-1, 208-pound receiver during rookie minicamp in early May.

“Size, instincts, top-of-route ability to separate,” Canales said of Coker’s strengths. “He’s really crafty in zones. He knows how to find the open spaces. Has a little cool run-after-catch, too. He can break some tackles because of the size that he brings. Attacks the ball at the high point. I mean, the guy really does have a cool skill set that he brings to us. So I’m excited to see him kinda get introduced as we start to develop out football, especially in Phase Three OTAs. Let’s see what he looks like against NFL talent. But I’m really excited about him.”

Players taken in the UFL’s draft can opt to join the league if they do not make an NFL roster for this upcoming season.

Panthers reportedly expected to sign standout UFL WR

The Panthers are reportedly set to sign a member of the inaugural All-UFL Team.

The Carolina Panthers may finally be filling that empty spot on their current roster.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the team is expected to sign wide receiver Daewood Davis. The 25-year-old pass catcher is fresh off spending the 2024 United Football League season with the Memphis Showboats.

A Broward County, Fla. native, Davis split his collegiate career between the University of Oregon (2017 to 2020) and Western Kentucky University (2021 to 2022). He’d shine in his two seasons for the Hilltoppers, reeling in 106 receptions for 1,625 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Davis proceeded to sign with the Miami Dolphins after going undrafted in 2023. He was later waived with an injury settlement during the team’s roster cutdown in August.

The UFL’s Showboats came calling in October, signing the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder a few months after his release from Miami. He’d go on to amass the seventh-most receiving yards (446) and second-most receiving touchdowns (five) in the league, earning a spot on the inaugural All-UFL Team.

Brahmas stun Showboats with two late TDs in UFL play

The Brahmas overcame a 16-0 deficit to stun the Showboats

The San Antonio Brahmas improved to 2-0 in the UFL with a dramatic, 20-19, victory over the Memphis Showboats on Saturday.

With less than a minute left and trailing 16-8, Chase Garber threw a TD pass to Jontre Kirklin.

The three-point attempt failed and San Antonio trailed 16-14.

However, the Brahmas used a UFL rule that allows teams to choose a fourth-and-12 play rather than attempting an onside kick.

The pass play was successful and it set up Garber finding Cody Latimer with three seconds left to give San Antonio the victory

10 former Ravens are signed to UFL teams

With the NFL season now in the rearview and the UFL set to debut, we’re looking at 10 former Baltimore Ravens who are participating in the spring league

With the NFL season now complete and the offseason underway, Baltimore has one of the most extended lists of players who are getting another shot in the new eight-team UFL, which kicks off season kicks off on Saturday, March 30, 2024, with the battle of the 2023 champions: Arlington Renegades vs Birmingham Stallions.

A combination agreement (the “UFL”) is the premier spring football league that resulted from the merger of the XFL and USFL.

Russ Brandon, former President and CEO of the XFL, will lead the UFL as President and CEO. Former USFL President of Football Operations Daryl Johnston will lead football operations.

Founded in 2001, the XFL was a collaboration between NBC and WWF (WWE), spearheaded by Vince McMahon. After a hot start, poor ratings ultimately led to the league’s lasting just one season. The league returned in 2020, with McMahon again leading the reboot, but it had to close its doors again after COVID-19 shut things down after just five weeks.

The league filed for bankruptcy and was forced to sell.

A group headed by Dany Garcia, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, bought the league out of bankruptcy for $15 million, eyeing 2023 as its return season.

The UFL has eight teams in Arlington (TX), Birmingham (AL), Detroit (MI), Houston (TX), San Antonio (TX), Memphis (TN), St. Louis (MO), and Washington D.C.

With action to begin this weekend, we’re looking at 10 former Ravens on UFLrosters.

Derrick Dillon with 109-yard return of missed field goal for USFL Memphis Showboats

The Showboats get a 109-yard kickoff return of a missed Pittsburgh field goal

A season highlight on Saturday as the Memphis Showboats were facing the Pittsburgh Maulers.

Chris Blewitt attempted a 59-yard field goal and it was short.

Derrick Dillon was waiting in the back of the end zone. He corraled the football and took off for the other end zone.

Dillon made a spectacular run and 109 yards later, the Showboats had six points.

Did he actually stay in the field of play or step out of the back of the end zone? It was close.

Todd Haley ticked at Skip Holtz after Showboats are crushed by Stallions in USFL

Todd Haley was not happy with Skip Holtz after his Showboats were crushed in USFL play

The Birmingham Stallions clobbered the Memphis Showboats, 42-2, Saturday in Week 2 of USFL play.

The Stallions’ final touchdown came in the last two minutes with the team leading by 33.

Michigan coach Todd Haley took exception and made sure to deliver a message to Birmingham coach Skip Holtz after the drubbing.

Holtz took the high road.

For those of you awaiting the rematch, it takes place in Week 10 of the USFL season on June 17 in Memphis.
