Melvin Gordon posts funny farewell to Broncos Country

Melvin Gordon’s Instagram story drew mixed reviews from Broncos fans.

Two days after his crippling fumble inside the five led to his release, former Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon posted a farewell to fans on his Instagram story.

It is ironic that Gordon referenced the famed O.J. Simpson chase, because it was with that same fervor Broncos Country called for his release following Week 11.

Gordon also shared an Instagram post in which he admitted he “can’t say it’s been the easiest 3 years,” but he added “thank you anyway @broncos for helping me continue my dream.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClQ5IaELwMI/

In Gordon’s three years with Denver, he fumbled 12 times. Earlier this season, Gordon fumbled inside the one-yard line against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, and he had a fumble returned for a touchdown in Denver’s first matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Gordon’s fumbles often proved too costly and occurred too frequently in order for him to stay a member of the team. The Broncos moved on Monday, and Gordon now gets a fresh start too.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett comments on cutting Melvin Gordon

“We thought it was best for the team and we moved on,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said of Melvin Gordon. “I wish him the best of luck.”

The Denver Broncos cut veteran running back Melvin Gordon on Monday after his fifth fumble of the season on Sunday.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett was diplomatic when he was asked about the team’s decision on Monday.

“Melvin, he’s a true pro,” the coach said. “He’s done a lot of good stuff here at the Denver Broncos and scored some touchdowns for us this year. We thought it was best for the team and we moved on. I wish him the best of luck and I think it’s great for him to have a fresh start.”

Hackett said the team will now turn to Latavius Murray at running back with Marlon Mack mixing in and Devine Ozigbo providing depth. Denver lost running back Chase Edmonds to an ankle injury against the Las Vegas Raiders and the team already had Javonte Williams and Mike Boone on injured reserve going into Sunday’s game.

Gordon rushed 508 times for 2,222 yards in 41 games with the Broncos from 2020-2022. He scored 22 touchdowns and fumbled 12 times during his tenure in Denver.

Why the Rams shouldn’t consider signing Melvin Gordon

The Rams shouldn’t express interest in bringing in Melvin Gordon following the surprising release of Darrell Henderson Jr.

The Los Angeles Rams surprisingly released Darrell Henderson Jr. on Tuesday, making some fans wonder if the move was made to create room for someone who was also recently released by his respective team: Melvin Gordon. While Gordon’s name has been tied to the Rams in recent years, it doesn’t make sense for the reigning Super Bowl champions to pursue the veteran running back after he’s cleared waivers following his release from the Denver Broncos, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

The Rams boast a dismal 3-7 record entering a Week 12 road matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, who have strung together four straight wins and appear to be the team to beat in the AFC. To make matters worse, Matthew Stafford is in the league’s concussion protocol for the second time in the last two weeks and Cooper Kupp could potentially miss the rest of the season after undergoing ankle surgery.

Given the current state of the team, the Rams may be wise to deploy more of their young players for the rest of the season to see who can contribute in the future. Bringing in a 29-year-old back that has nearly 2,000 career touches to his name is more of a win-now move that the Rams aren’t in a position to make.

Just this past week against the New Orleans Saints, the rushing attack showed signs of life with Cam Akers and Kyren Williams splitting the majority of the touches. Akers and Williams combined for 105 scrimmage yards on 22 total touches in Week 11 to help Los Angeles produce a season-high 148 rushing yards as a team.

With the current injuries and the team’s diminishing odds to sneak into the playoffs, Akers and Williams should get more run down the final stretch of the regular season to see if they can be part of the hopeful backfield revival in 2023. So for those believing that all the signs point toward Gordon signing with the Rams after being waived by the Broncos — and Henderson’s release from the team — Los Angeles would be wise not to bring in an experienced back, especially one that wouldn’t be in the organization’s long-term plans.

Why Chiefs should attempt to claim former Rams RB Darrell Henderson Jr.

Our @goldmctNFL on why the #Chiefs should attempt to claim former #Rams RB Darrell Henderson Jr. on waivers.

The Kansas City Chiefs could again find themselves putting in a waiver claim for a running back.

Last week, the Chiefs were among the four teams to attempt to claim former Cardinals RB Eno Benjamin on waivers. They were unsuccessful in their attempt, which came before Clyde Edwards-Helaire suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 11.

Heading into Week 12, Kansas City will have some options to weigh at the running back position. It all starts with Edwards-Helaire’s status. If he needs to be placed on injured reserve, that opens up a number of possibilities. One of those possibilities is that they could stick with Ronald Jones, who has been a healthy scratch in all 10 games this season, as their No. 3 running back.

Another option is that the Chiefs could choose to place a waiver claim on one of the recently-released veteran running backs. On Monday, the Broncos waived starting RB Melvin Gordon. On Tuesday, the Rams waived RB Darrell Henderson Jr., who has started nearly 30 games for them over the past four seasons.

I expect the Chiefs to avoid Gordon, despite his relative success playing Kansas City in recent years. He has 26 fumbles in 108 NFL starts across his career with the Chargers and Broncos. That basically amounts to having a fumble in a fourth of his NFL starts. Andy Reid doesn’t stand for turnovers, so I’d expect that Gordon will be out of the running for the Chiefs.

Henderson, however, makes much more sense for Kansas City and it’s not just because they’re playing Los Angeles in Week 12. Rams Wire’s Cam DaSilva described Henderson as “a good one-cut guy who is also a very capable receiver.” Sounds familiar? That’s because Henderson’s skill set is similar to that of Edwards-Helaire. He also has experience as a third-down back, working as a pass blocker. He has two pressures allowed this season, including one sack in 39 pass-blocking snaps according to PFF. As a receiver out of the backfield, Henderson has 66 receptions for nearly 500 yards and four touchdowns in his career. He only played special teams as a rookie, with 36 total snaps in 2019, including three kicks returned for 58 yards.

A player like Henderson wouldn’t just help replace the loss of  Edwards-Helaire, but he could legitimately back up a veteran like Jerick McKinnon, who has become a vital part of the team’s offense as their third-down back. It also doesn’t hurt that Henderson has Super Bowl experience either.

While the fit is nice, fate is in the hands of the NFL’s waiver system. The Chiefs are going to be low on the priority as they’re atop the NFL’s standings, so any number of teams could swoop in and place a successful claim ahead of Kansas City.

LOOK: Melvin Gordon trolls Broncos fans after being released

The former Badger had some choice words for Broncos fans

After three seasons in Denver, the Broncos decided to release former Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon early this week.

The former Badger had some things to say to Broncos country on his Instagram story, and let’s just say they weren’t the nicest things.

The former Badger star has spent eight seasons in the NFL, the first five of which came with the Chargers and the last three coming in Broncos country.

Gordon got clever with his farewell post as he decided to meme his way out of Denver. Here is a look at his Instagram story post and the message listed below. He wasn’t exactly close with the Broncos fans:

Broncos’ updated RB depth chart without Melvin Gordon

After cutting Melvin Gordon and losing Chase Edmonds to injury, Broncos will lean on Latavius Murray with Marlon Mack mixed in this week.

The Denver Broncos cut running back Melvin Gordon on Monday in a move that will shake up the team’s backfield depth chart.

Denver also lost running back Chase Edmonds to a high ankle sprain this week, making the team even thinner at the position.

So where does that leave the Broncos’ backfield?

Right now, Latavius Murray is the team’s starter by default, a role he will presumably hold for the rest of the season. The only other healthy running back on the 53-man roster right now is Marlon Mack, so he will serve as the RB2 at least this week.

Going forward, Mike Boone will be eligible to return from injured reserve next week, and Edmonds figures to factor into the rotation once he returns from his injury. For the moment, though, fantasy football managers should expect a heavy dose of Murray with Mack mixed in.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos elevate running back Devine Ozigbo from the practice squad this week. Denver might also consider adding a free agent or poaching a RB off another team’s practice squad. Even if the Broncos do make a move at the position, though, Murray is the clear leader in Denver’s backfield going forward.

Broncos injuries: RB Chase Edmonds (ankle) out ‘multiple weeks’

Broncos RB Chase Edmonds is set to miss ‘multiple weeks’ with a high ankle sprain.

The Denver Broncos’ running back depth will be tested after the team waived veteran Melvin Gordon on Monday.

In addition to parting ways with Gordon, the Broncos have also lost running back Chase Edmonds for “multiple weeks” to a high ankle sprain, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

With Javonte Williams and Mike Boone already on injured reserve, the team’s only healthy running backs remaining on the 53-man roster now are Latavius Murray and Marlon Mack. Denver also has Devine Ozigbo available on the practice squad.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Broncos defensive lineman Jonathan Harris is also set to miss “a few games” after suffering a knee injury against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Denver’s defensive line losing Harris could mean more rotational snaps for rookies Matt Henningsen and Eyioma Uwazurike. The Broncos also have defensive lineman McTelvin Agim available on the practice squad.

Denver Broncos waive veteran RB Melvin Gordon

The Broncos are cutting ties with running back Melvin Gordon

The disarray around the Denver Broncos continues.

After losing the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday in overtime, the Broncos are parting company with veteran RB Melvin Gordon.

They waived the former Wisconsin star on Monday.

Gordon fumbled 5 times in 2022 with Denver. He had 318 rushing yards on 90 carries and a pair of touchdowns.

Overall as a Bronco, Gordon had 2,222 rushing yards and 19 TDs on the ground.

Broncos cut RB Melvin Gordon after 5th fumble of season

The Broncos are parting ways with RB Melvin Gordon.

The Denver Broncos are finally parting ways with veteran running back Melvin Gordon.

Denver waived Gordon on Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported. The team quickly confirmed that report with an official announcement.

Gordon fumbled against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, marking his fifth fumble on 90 carries this season, an average of one fumble per every 18 carries.

After an eventual 22-16 loss, Gordon faced the music and told media members that he was trying to fight for more yards and had the ball punched out.

“I was sick about it, obviously,” Gordon said Sunday afternoon. “I kind of know what comes after that at this point. I shot my own self in the foot. I am a little salty because I was feeling it today.

“That happened and I kind of knew that I was going to have to find a way to get back in rhythm. I knew it was going to be tough. I tried to make splashes here and there after it but my share of opportunities kind of dwindled after that, and that was my fault.”

The Broncos have now decided to move on, and Gordon will get a fresh start as well. It’s a move that is probably best for all parties.
