Melquizael Costa shuts down Jamall Emmers’ callout after UFC Mexico – mostly

Melquizael Costa picked up his third straight win, but had a streak of two straight finishes snapped.

MEXICO CITY – [autotag]Melquizael Costa[/autotag] met the media Saturday after his win over Christian Rodriguez at UFC on ESPN 64.

Costa (23-7 MMA, 4-2 UFC) won for the third straight time when he outworked Christian Rodriguez (12-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) on the prelims at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. Afterward, the Brazilian said a callout from Jamall Emmers earlier in the event probably will fall by the wayside.

“I study the division and I watch a lot of fights. I feel like I can beat anyone in this division,” Costa told MMA Junkie at his post-fight news conference. “Definitely, I think I should be fighting a ranked guy. … (Emmers) was one of the names that got brought up to me for this fight, but I didn’t think it made a lot of sense. I just fought Andre Fili, who’s a guy who’s very experienced and fought everyone in the UFC. … I don’t think it makes much sense, but if the UFC wants it (I’ll fight him).”

Emmers (21-8 MMA, 4-4 UFC) stopped Gabriel Miranda (17-8 MMA, 1-3 UFC) with a first-round TKO three fights before Costa walked to the cage, and he said a lightweight fight that makes sense for him is the Costa-Rodrigeuz winner: Costa.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

The UFC’s return to Seattle is less than one month away, but the lineup is still filling out.

Veteran featherweight [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] will battle [autotag]Melquizael Costa[/autotag] in the most recent addition to UFC Fight Night 252 on Feb. 22 at Climate Pledge Arena.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the matchup but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Born in Federal Way, Wash., Fili (24-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) most recently competed in June when he defeated Cub Swanson by split decision. The win moved him to 3-2 in his most recent five.

Costa (21-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC) looks to build on momentum that began when he defeated Shayilan Nuerdanbieke by rear-naked choke in June. Costa is 2-1 in his most recent three.

“I always say I need a month, and within a week, I want to train again. We’re going to go back into training pretty soon, and I just heard Noche UFC, the show would be on Sept. 14. Actually, that’s my birthday. So that would be a great gift to have if somebody wants.”

UFC on ESPN 58 video: Melquizael Costa scores first promotional finish, taps Shayilan Nuerdanbieke

Melquizael Costa secured his first UFC finish by pulling off a third-round submission at UFC on ESPN 58.

[autotag]Melquizael Costa[/autotag] now has a UFC finish on his professional record.

On the prelims of UFC on ESPN 58 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Costa (21-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC) pulled off a late submission of Shayilan Nuerdanbieke to keep the judges out of a close contest. Nuerdanbieke (39-12 MMA, 3-3 UFC) found himself caught in a rear-naked choke and tapped at 1:50 of Round 3.

The first two rounds of the fight were very competitive. Nuerdanbieke won the first round on all cards, while Costa won Round 2. With the fight up for grabs, Costa put the finishing touches on the fight to get his first UFC finish, and bring his record in the promotion to .500.
