“From the start, I wanted to finish. This is something we always try to do. We always want to win, but I knew that this particular one, if I got the (submission), it would be seven submission wins, seven knockouts, seven decisions on my resume.”

“I always say I need a month, and within a week, I want to train again. We’re going to go back into training pretty soon, and I just heard Noche UFC, the show would be on Sept. 14. Actually, that’s my birthday. So that would be a great gift to have if somebody wants.”

LAS VEGAS – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 58 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $116,000.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC on ESPN 58 video: Melquizael Costa scores first promotional finish, taps Shayilan Nuerdanbieke

Melquizael Costa secured his first UFC finish by pulling off a third-round submission at UFC on ESPN 58.

[autotag]Melquizael Costa[/autotag] now has a UFC finish on his professional record.

On the prelims of UFC on ESPN 58 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Costa (21-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC) pulled off a late submission of Shayilan Nuerdanbieke to keep the judges out of a close contest. Nuerdanbieke (39-12 MMA, 3-3 UFC) found himself caught in a rear-naked choke and tapped at 1:50 of Round 3.

The first two rounds of the fight were very competitive. Nuerdanbieke won the first round on all cards, while Costa won Round 2. With the fight up for grabs, Costa put the finishing touches on the fight to get his first UFC finish, and bring his record in the promotion to .500.

UFC Fight Night 233 video: Referee fends off discombobulated Melquizael Costa after Steve Garcia’s bloody TKO

Such was the situation Saturday at UFC Fight Night 233 after [autotag]Steve Garcia[/autotag] brutally finished [autotag]Melquizael Costa[/autotag] with a bombardment of strikes in their featherweight bout at the UFC Apex.

In the opening moments of the second round, Garcia (21-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Costa (14-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) engaged in a scramble, at which point Garcia dropped Costa with a knee and right hand. From there, Garcia moved all in for the finish with an array of punches, hammerfists and elbows, which bloodied up Costa.

When Costa could no longer defend himself, referee Chris Tognoni stopped the fight. And that’s when we saw just how discombobulated Costa was from the fight-ending sequence as he tried to take down the ref with a single-leg. To Tognoni’s credit, he hit the switch on Costa to fend him off until the Brazilian fighter came to.

With the finish, Garcia, a Jackson-Wink MMA product, now has won three fights in a row, including two this year. Costa has alternated one win and two losses in his three UFC appearances.
