CBS Sports: MSU head coach Mel Tucker’s seat is heating up, ‘pressure mounting’

CBS Sports may be a little premature with this take on Mel Tucker…

Michigan State football head coach Mel Tucker’s seat is apparently starting to warm up, according to Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports.

Dodd released the “2023 College Football Hot Seat Rankings” this week and Tucker is one of the coaches that could be starting feel some pressure entering this upcoming season. Of the six ratings (ranging from zero to five) in Dodd’s article, Tucker was slotted as a three — which is the bucket labeled as “pressure is mounting.”

Tucker is entering his fourth season as the Spartans head coach, with a record of 18-14 overall. Tucker, however, is in the midst of a massive deal that makes it wild to think that Michigan State would be even remotely considering to move on from him. So this rating from Dodd seems terribly premature unless he expects Michigan State to have a terrible season in 2023 — which I personally don’t think will happen.

Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker has been selected as the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.

Tucker’s Spartans picked up an impressive victory over previously-No. 6 Michigan this past weekend to remain undefeated on the season. Michigan State trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half before coming back to win by a score of 37-33.

The Dodd Trophy is handed out at the end of the year to the best college football coach for the season. Tucker certainly will be part of that conversation if Michigan State continues to win.

Mel Tucker hired as Michigan State head coach

Former Georgia football defensive coordinator Mel Tucker has been hired as the new Michigan State football’s head coach.

Michigan State is moving on from long time head coach Mark Dantonio and have hired former Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Dantonio spent 16 years as the Spartans’ head coach, finishing his career there with a .641 win percentage and a 7-5 bowl record.  Tucker on the other hand has been climbing the coaching ranks year by year.

Tucker began his coaching career in 1997 at Michigan State as a graduate assistant.  He bounced around from college and the NFL as a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator, winning 2 National Championships with Ohio State and Alabama.

Tucker left Alabama after that National Championship in 2015 and joined Kirby Smart at Georgia.  He spent three years as the Dawgs defensive coordinator, helping win a Rose Bowl and nearly a National Championship.

Tucker spent this past season as the Colorado head coach, where he finished 5-7.  Now Tucker finally has the head coaching position he deserves at a Power Five school.  Well deserved from a great defensive mind.
