Jaguars waive ex-Titans RB Mekhi Sargent

Former Titans RB Mekhi Sargent was waived by the Jaguars on Monday.

Former Tennessee Titans running back and 2021 undrafted free agent, Mekhi Sargent, is set to be looking for a new home.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Monday that they have waived the Iowa product, who signed a futures deal with the team back in January. He’ll hit waivers but will become a free agent if unclaimed.

Sargent spent all of 2022 with the Jags on their practice squad but didn’t manage to see the field.

The 25-year-old was one of the bigger surprises on the Titans’ initial 53-man roster in 2021 after he played well during the preseason. He appeared in three games for Tennessee that year, but played predominantly on special teams.

He also had stints with the Jags and Los Angeles Rams after being waived by the Titans, playing in a total of four games combined with those two.

With the Titans having just Hassan Haskins, Julius Chestnut and Jonathan Ward behind Derrick Henry, a reunion between Tennessee and Sargent wouldn’t be surprising.

Jaguars waive RB Mekhi Sargent amid backfield changes

The Jaguars parted with Mekhi Sargent on Monday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived Mekhi Sargent on Monday afternoon, the team announced.

Sargent, 25, joined the Jaguars in December 2021 when he was claimed off waivers by the team. He previously spent parts of his rookie season with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams.

After joining the Jaguars, Sargent appeared in one game late in the 2021 season and had one carry for two yards. He then spent the entire 2022 season on Jacksonville’s practice squad. In January, the Jaguars retained Sargent with a reserve/future contract.

The Jaguars have made a transformation of their backfield a priority after trading James Robinson during the 2022 season. Travis Etienne Jr took the brunt of the load following that move, although JaMycal Hasty had a bigger role late in the year.

In free agency, the team added former Cleveland Browns running back D’Ernest Johnson and the Jaguars have reportedly had their eyes on several running backs in the 2023 NFL Draft class.

Jaguars cut RB Mekhi Sargent, finalizing running back rotation ahead of Week 1

The move set the #Jaguars on course to bring a three-headed monster against opponents in the run game.

After cutting second-year running back Mekhi Sargent on Tuesday afternoon, the Jacksonville Jaguars have effectively locked in on their starting rotation at the position heading into their Week 1 tilt against the Washington Commanders. Sargent had competed against rookie Snoop Conner in the preseason to serve as backup to James Robinson and Travis Etienne.

Following Sargent’s abrupt departure from Duval County after a moderately successful preseason, Jaguars’ general manager Trent Baalke spoke to the media about his confidence in the team’s course of action.

“It is a position we feel good about” He explained of the running backs groups on Tuesday.  “We feel good about the health of both Travis [Etienne Jr.] and James. I feel really good about the development of Snoop. We had a good meeting this morning. He knows exactly what he needs to do. We feel good, but it is a position we are going to continue to look at and monitor and add to if necessary.”

Even with just a couple of spots on their depth chart left open as he fills out his roster, Baalke still has his eyes open. The final battle to back-up Robinson and Etienne may have another fold in it by the end of the week. The Jaguars cut fifth-string back Ryquell Armstead in one of their first moves of attrition this week, so of the five running backs they carried on the 80-man roster, only three have managed to make the final cut.

That could make for a stale competition for carries in the regular season, and may not be enough depth for Jacksonville to fully maximize their potential in the ground game in 2022. The rookie Conner is still coming into his own after just four games as a pro, and a veteran could provide more flexibility on Sundays as well as a mentoring presence to the young core of talent the Jaguars already have.

Postgame analysis: Jags start preseason with a 27-11 loss to Raiders

The #Jaguars fell to the Raiders Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game as the offense couldn’t really get much going. However, Travon Walker did flash.

If there is one thing fans learned about the Jacksonville Jaguars in their preseason debut for 2022, it’s that a lot of work has to be done. Simply put, the team couldn’t get much offense going and that resulted in them enduring a 27-11 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

With the 2022 Hall of Fame Game serving as an extra preseason game, the Jags sat over 20 players and it put them in a situation where they were especially without their top offensive players. That reflected in the team’s inability to score in the first half as Las Vegas had a 20-0 lead at halftime.

That said, this game was one for the Jags’ younger players. That didn’t mean starters were completely excluded though, as the Jags are set to start several players under 25 years of age. One of them is center Luke Fortner, who saw extensive playing time and had some good moments in the process.

As for the defense, quarterback Jarrett Stidham made plays against the unit that even briefly trotted some starters out early in the game. The young quarterback moved the ball well enough to exit the first two quarters with 20 points by utilizing players like running backs Josh Jacobs, Ameer Abdullah, and Zamir White. Of the three, White had the highest rushing total ending the game with 11 carries for 52 yards.

However, White wasn’t the only Georgia Bulldog showing up in the first half. No. 1 pick and Jags OLB Travon Walker was all over the field and started the game with a rep where he pressured Stidham after bull-rushing offensive tackle Brandon Parker. Unfortunately, Walker was penalized in that play as the official believed Stidham was hit in an illegal area up high. In the next series, Walker sacked Stidham and showcased why he was the first player selected off the draft board in April.

To start the second half, the Jags’ defensive unit played better, holding the Raiders to a scoreless quarter to begin it. But unfortunately, the offense, which was led by quarterback Kyle Sloter in the process, could only come away with three points.

In the drive they were able to score, the player that led them along the way was running back Mekhi Sargent, who touched the ball five times in that drive. Overall, he finished the game with five carries for 22 yards and five receptions for 37 yards.

Sargent came into Thursday’s game as a relatively unknown player, but after showing off his versatility, he helped his chances to make the roster. He still may have to battle Ryquell Armstead for the RB4 role, but another performance like the one he had on Thursday could give him the lead in the race, and it will be interesting to see if he capitalizes on the momentum.

Then lastly, late in the fourth quarter, Sloter was finally able to throw a touchdown pass to put the score at its final state of 27-11. That pass went to running back Nathan Cottrell, which concluded a nine-play drive that was the Jags’ second to last. In that particular drive, receiver Willie Johnson made a few positive plays, bringing in his only two passes of the night in the process. He also had an eight-yard rush on a jet sweep and finished the night with 41 receiving yards.

Overall, it wasn’t just a night where the team couldn’t do much offensively, but one where they had a lot of mistakes like crucial penalties. For example, Johnson returned a punt for a touchdown in the second half, but it came back because of a holding call from defensive back Ayo Oyelola.

That said, Jags coach Doug Pederson said the team will work on eliminating the mistakes they made Thursday heading forward. He also said he will play more starters next week as their game against Cleveland on Aug. 12 will be four days away from the first wave of training camp roster cuts.

Editor’s note: A change was made to this article concerning how Walker’s penalty.

Jaguars 2022 training camp preview: Running backs

One of the biggest question marks for the Jags roster is the running back position, where their top-2 players are coming off major injuries.

With training camp just nine days away, it’s time to start previewing every position on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster. We started with the quarterback position earlier this week, and now it’s time to move on to another important position on the offense when it comes to scoring: running back.

The Jags currently have six rushers listed on their roster. Their top player at the position, James Robinson, is one of the best players in the league at his position but is coming off a serious injury. As a result, it’s important to know what the Jags have behind him.

Here is a preview of the Jags’ full running backs group as we close in on camp:

Jags tender 3 exclusive-right free agents

In addition to releasing Carlos Hyde, the Jags tendered three of their exclusive-right free agents.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made multiple transactions Friday in addition to releasing running back Carlos Hyde. Those transactions included tendering three exclusive-right free agents in linebacker and defensive end Jamir Jones, linebacker Chapelle Russell, and running back Mekhi Sargent.

Of the three, Russell is the player who saw the most playing time for the Jags. Hew participated in all 16 of their games last season and registered one start for the team as well. Along the way, he was able to garner 18 total tackles, with 10 of them being solo tackles.

Jones and Sargent were late-season additions to the team, and both were claimed off waivers on Dec. 27. That date took place after James Robinson’s Achilles injury and the team had to put 10 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, so the Jags needed both for depth.

In Sargent’s case, the Jags seem interested in seeing if he could stick around after becoming a little more familiar with the team. With the departure of Hyde and Dare Ogunbowale now a pending free agent, the Jags need to find a No. 3 and No. 4 running back, which could potentially be Sargent, although he only registered a carry with Jacksonville.

As for Jones, he played in two games for the Jags and registered two tackles. He initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2021 with the Houston Texans. He participated in 15 games last season, but most of that time on the field came with the Los Angeles Rams (10 games) and Pittsburgh Steelers (three games).

Jaguars inactives for Week 17 game vs. Patriots

The Jags have named their four inactive players for Week 17’s game in New England, two of which were the only players on the final injury report Friday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced their list of inactive players for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots and it included four players. Those players were cornerback Nevin Lawson, running back Mekhi Sargent, linebacker Dakota Allen, and tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

Allen (shoulder) and O’Shaughnessy (hip) were on Friday’s final injury report. The former was ruled questionable after being limited all week, while the latter was rule OUT after not practicing at all.

Both players sustained their respective injuries in Week 16’s game against the Jets. Allen’s injury was one that ruled him questionable to return, while O’Shaughnessy was hurt on the Jags’ last offensive drive of the game after hauling in a catch that was converted for a first-down. O’Shaughnessy was visibly in pain afterward and the team had to use a time out as a result.

The Jags just signed Sargent on Dec. 27, so there wasn’t a strong chance for him to play. However, the choice to sit Lawson is interesting as he’s one of the Jags most experienced cornerbacks with Shaquill Griffin on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

As for the Patriots’ list of inactive, they are as follows:

Jags claim LB Jamir Jones, RB Mekhi Sargent off waivers from Rams

The #Jaguars added two players to their roster from the Rams through the waiver wire on Monday.

With just two games left and the team dealing with both a mix of COVID-19 and injury issues, the Jacksonville Jaguars started this week off by utilizing the waiver wire to make some new additions. Those additions, who both previously played for the Los Angeles Rams, were linebacker Jamir Jones and running back Mekhi Sargent.

Jones entered the league in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame with the Houston Texans. While with the Fighting Irish, he played in 45 games and was able to garner 50 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles throughout his four seasons in the NCAA. After his time with the Texans, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in April of this year and eventually joined the Rams in September.

Since entering the league, Jones has played in 13 (three with the Steelers and 10 with the Rams) games and has started in one. That start came Week 3 with the Steelers in a home game against the Cincinnati Bengals where he was able to garner one tackle while seeing the field for 20 snaps on defense. However, when looking at his overall career, Jones will enter his tenure with the Jags with eight total tackles and 235 special teams reps to his name.

Sargent entered the league with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted rookie free agent from Iowa and was able to make their initial 53-man roster and play in three games. He was later waived and placed on their practice squad then was released in October. He joined the Rams in November and played in three games in the process.

In terms of NFL stats, Sargent will enter his tenure with the Jags with just nine rushing yards to his name, but garnered 354 carries for 1,801 yards and 20 touchdowns with the Hawkeyes.

Rams sign RB Mekhi Sargent to active roster, add WR J.J. Koski to practice squad

The Rams made a couple of roster moves, signing RB Mekhi Sargent to the 53-man roster and bringing back WR J.J. Koski on the practice squad.

The Rams have watched their running back depth dwindle as the season has gone on, forcing them to make frequent moves at the position. They made yet another on Wednesday, signing Mekhi Sargent to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

He takes the spot of J.J. Koski, who was just waived by the Rams on Tuesday. He was promptly re-signed to the practice squad Wednesday after clearing waivers.

Sargent originally signed to the Rams’ practice squad in early November and was promoted to the game-day roster for Week 13 after the team placed Buddy Howell on injured reserve. Sargent was the backup to Sony Michel, even though Darrell Henderson Jr. was also active.

Sargent carried it twice for a total of 5 yards in garbage time, his first offensive snaps with the Rams.

Rams place Buddy Howell on IR, promote Mekhi Sargent and Brandon Powell

The Rams placed Buddy Howell on IR and activated Mekhi Sargent and Brandon Powell from the practice squad.

The Los Angeles Rams have been ailing at the running back position all season, and their injury woes continue to ravage their depth in the backfield. Ahead of Sunday’s game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Rams have placed Buddy Howell on injured reserve, also activating Mekhi Sargent and Brandon Powell from the practice squad.

With Howell headed to injured reserve, he’ll miss at least the next three games. Besides Howell, Raymond Calais, Xavier Jones, and Jake Funk suffered various injuries that will keep them sidelined until 2022.

Also, it remains to be seen if Cam Akers can suit up this season due to an Achilles tear he suffered before training camp. So there’s a legitimate chance Los Angeles will have lost five running backs to season-ending injuries.

Given the team’s moves on Saturday, it’s apparent that Darrell Henderson Jr. — who is dealing with a thigh injury — is in real jeopardy of missing Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. Sony Michel could draw the start this week if Henderson is unable to play.

Sargent could be the No. 2 running back on the depth chart on Sunday if Henderson is inactive. Throughout the season, Sargent has logged only 15 total snaps (13 on special teams, 2 on offense), with all of them coming with the Tennessee Titans.

As the Rams prepare to make a strong push in the latter part of the season, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them search free agency for more depth at running back sometime in the near future.
