Rams sign Brandon Powell to active roster, bring back J.J. Koski on practice squad

The Rams signed Brandon Powell to the active roster, rewarding him for his huge contributions on punt returns

Brandon Powell has emerged as a stud in the return game for the Rams, making a huge impact since taking over that role on special teams. The Rams have been promoting him from the practice squad on game days but he’ll have a more permanent spot now.

The team announced Wednesday that Powell has been signed to the active roster, a reward for the job he’s done in the return game lately. The Rams also brought back J.J. Koski after waiving him this week, signing him to the practice squad.

The Rams had an opening on the 53-man roster after waiving Koski, so Powell took his spot.

Powell made one of the biggest plays of the season against the Vikings when he returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown, earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the return. This season, he’s returned four punts for 93 yards and six kickoffs for 172 yards, including a 65-yarder.

Rams sign RB Mekhi Sargent to active roster, add WR J.J. Koski to practice squad

The Rams made a couple of roster moves, signing RB Mekhi Sargent to the 53-man roster and bringing back WR J.J. Koski on the practice squad.

The Rams have watched their running back depth dwindle as the season has gone on, forcing them to make frequent moves at the position. They made yet another on Wednesday, signing Mekhi Sargent to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

He takes the spot of J.J. Koski, who was just waived by the Rams on Tuesday. He was promptly re-signed to the practice squad Wednesday after clearing waivers.

Sargent originally signed to the Rams’ practice squad in early November and was promoted to the game-day roster for Week 13 after the team placed Buddy Howell on injured reserve. Sargent was the backup to Sony Michel, even though Darrell Henderson Jr. was also active.

Sargent carried it twice for a total of 5 yards in garbage time, his first offensive snaps with the Rams.

Rams waive WR J.J. Koski

The Rams waived J.J. Koski from the 53-man roster. Could Brandon Powell be promoted to take his spot?

Wide receiver depth has been tough for the Los Angeles Rams to find in recent weeks ever since DeSean Jackson was cut and Robert Woods tore his ACL. They brought up J.J. Koski from the practice squad to provide some insurance but that was only temporary.

The team announced Tuesday that it has waived Koski a month after signing him to the 53-man roster. There was no corresponding move made, so the Rams now have an open spot on the roster.

They could be preparing to sign Brandon Powell from the practice squad after his impressive showing in the return game on Sunday, something Sean McVay hinted at this week. Justin Hollins could also be activated off injured reserve after he was designated to return last week.

Here’s what McVay said about possibly signing Powell to the active roster from the practice squad.

Some of the semantics on, all right, do you use an active roster spot or not on some of that? You do have some more flexibility than previous years with the ability to flex a guy from your practice squad up twice. That’s still an option as is putting him on the active roster,” he said Monday.
