Giants dropped by Ravens, 27-13: Instant analysis

Instant analysis of the New York Giants’ 27-13 Week 16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Oddsmakers did not give the New York Giants much of chance going into their game against the surging Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon and for good reason.

The Giants were coming off back-to-back deflating losses to Arizona and Cleveland, scoring a total of 13 points in the two games. The Ravens were trending in the other direction, entering the game on a three-game winning streak in which they amassed 121 points and appeared to be unstoppable.

Baltimore has been the kings of December winning 11 of the 12 games started by quarterback Lamar Jackson since 2018.

Make that 12 of 13.

The oddsmakers had it right. The Giants did have little chance in this game. To be fair, it’s hard to see any team stopping the Ravens’ offense right now. They are so dynamic with Jackson running the RPO, it’s not a fair fight. Throw in the fact the Giants are punchless on offense and you had a perfect recipe for a quick TKO.

Baltimore came out of the gate strong and didn’t let up. They held the football for 13:17 of the first quarter, running 23 offensive plays to the Giants’ three, 147 total yards (95 on the ground) en route to a 14-0 first quarter lead.

The second quarter brought more of the same. The Giants started out the quarter with the ball but quickly had to punt it back after rookie Austin Mack dropped a sure first down killing the drive after five plays.

Then it was all Ravens again with Jackson and rookie running back J.K. Dobbins providing a deadly 1-2 punch on the ground. Jackson, after hitting wide receiver Marquise Brown for an easy touchdown on the Ravens’ first possession, threw short, high percentage passes to move the chains and keep the Giants’ defense on the field, running up the lead to 17-0 midday through the second quarter.

With all the running, the clock ran down quickly. The Giants finally got their offense together late in the first half but once again, could not turn a red zone opportunity into a touchdown. The Giants ended up settling for a 31-yard Graham Gano field goal. The red zone problem is nothing new. They entered the game 31st in the league in red zone offense (45.95%).

It really didn’t matter since the defense could not stop Jackson & Co. Baltimore got the ball back with 1:08 remaining, drove it 65 yards in nine plays, settling for a Justin Tucker field goal giving them a 20-3 halftime lead.

The Giants settled down in the second half but did allow former nemesis Dez Bryant to score an easy touchdown to give the Ravens a 27-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Big Blue narrowed the lead later in the quarter to 27-13 after Daniel Jones hit Sterling Shepard for a 3-yard touchdown to cap off a 15-play, 76-yard drive.

The loss dropped the Giants to 5-10 on the season putting their postseason hopes on life support.

Notes

  • The Giants won the second half 10-7 but who’s counting? It just shows they were invested for the full sixty minutes.
  • The Giants rushed for under 100 yards for the third straight week. Their 54 yards were the lowest on the ground since they gained just 29 against Pittsburgh in Week 1. They are 0-7 when they rush for under 100 yards.
  • Baltimore rushed for 249 yards, the most allowed by the Giants this season — by a lot. The most the Giants had given up in a game this year was 159 against Arizona in Week 14.
  • This was only the fourth game this year the Giants did not commit a turnover. They created one — a Lamar Jackson fumble inside the five that was recovered by Logan Ryan. The Giants are 2-2 this year when they don’t turn the ball over.
  • The Giants had three hits on Jackson but did not sack him. Jones, however, was sacked six times in the game. For the second straight week, he was relegated to the pocket and did not attempt to rush the football until the final minute of the game.
  • Jones was sacked three consecutive times on a drive in the early fourth quarter. Rookie tackle Matt Peart was victimized by three separate Ravens.
  • Kicker Graham Gano’s two field goals tied Josh Brown’s franchise record for consecutive field goals at 29.
  • Tight end Evan Engram injured his ankle in the final two minutes of the game.

Giants’ Golden Tate out, Daniel Jones questionable vs. Ravens

New York Giants WR Golden Tate is out and QB Daniel Jones is questionable against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16.

The New York Giants wrapped up their Christmas Day practice earlier this afternoon and have subsequently listed wide receiver Golden Tate (calf) out against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16.

Tate was a new addition to the injury report on Wednesday after he came up lame early in practice and could not continue. He missed practice on Thursday and Friday, and could be a candidate for injured reserve.

The news was more positive on quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring/ankle) and rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes (knee), each of whom were listed as questionable.

Both Jones and Holmes were limited on Friday.

Meanwhile, linebacker Blake Martinez was a late addition to the injury report and is listed as questionable after suffering an ankle injury. He was also limited.

Finally, tight end Evan Engram (calf) and rookie offensive tackle Matt Peart (ankle) were full participants in practice and neither received an injury designation.

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones, Darnay Holmes remain limited

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones and CB Darnay Holmes were once again limited in practice, while WR Golden Tate sat out.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday and quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring/ankle) saw his participation increase substantially.

Head coach Joe Judge expressed an optimism that Jones was on track to start against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday, and during the portion of practice open to the media, it was easy to see why he felt that way.

“I thought he had a good day yesterday. He had a good day yesterday. He went out there, we put him through everything,” Judge told reporters. “Today will be a more intensive day. Today will be a higher volume day for him. It will be interesting to see how he responds. We’ll see him out there moving around throughout all the team periods. He’ll jump right into his normal role and go forward with it. The intention is if he’s able to play, we intend to play him.”

The news was not nearly as positive for wide receiver Golden Tate, who worked with trainers on the side one day after suffering a calf injury in practice.

“Golden is probably going to just stay with the trainers today. We’ll see if he can do a little bit of stuff outside. We’ll see where he’s at. It’s kind of standard operating procedure the day after that. We’ll see where he’s at for the game. I can’t give you much of an update until after today on that,” Judge said.

Meanwhile, tight end Evan Engram (calf) and rookie offensive tackle Matt Peart (ankle) were full participants.

Did not participate: WR Golden Tate (calf)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (hamstring), CB Darnay Holmes (knee)

Full participant: TE Evan Engram (calf), OT Matt Peart (ankle)

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones, Darnay Holmes limited

The New York Giants had five limited participants in practice on Wednesday, including QB Daniel Jones and CB Darnay Holmes.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of their Week 16 game against the Baltimore Ravens, and once again all eyes were on quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring/ankle).

Prior to practice, head coach Joe Judge expressed his respect for Jones’ toughness and verbally committed to the quarterback long-term.

“I don’t know if there’s an ‘aha’ moment,” Judge said told reporters. “To me, it’s a string of moments watching Daniel work. Watching the respect he has in the locker room. Watching him improve throughout this season. I think he’s demonstrated a level of toughness and leadership and knowledge on the field that gives us confidence to put him out there and build with Daniel.

“So I’m not going to point to one moment, but I can talk about this entire season of: This guy has definitely earned my respect. I made it very hard on him from the beginning in a lot of ways and he hasn’t blinked.”

Back on the field, Jones was a limited participant in practice, taking first-team reps during Wednesday’s media portion.

Notably, rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes (knee) was also limited, which is a positive development after missing the previous two games.

Wide receiver Golden Tate appeared to come up limping early in practice.

The Giants’ official injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: N/A

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (hamstring), CB Darnay Holmes (knee), TE Evan Engram (calf), OT Matt Peart (ankle), WR Golden Tate (calf)

Giants’ Joe Judge: Matt Peart sat out in Week 15 due to an ailment

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge said rookie OT Matt Peart sat out in Week 15 not due to performance, but due to an ailment.

[jwplayer Huuatmwd-ThvAeFxT]

The New York Giants appeared to limit their offensive line rotation in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns, with Andrew Thomas, Nick Gates, Kevin Zeitler and Cam Fleming taking 100 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.

The only pair that actually split time were guards Will Hernandez and rookie Shane Lemieux.

Given how well he had played in recent weeks, it was curious not to see rookie Matt Peart on the field, especially at right tackle where Fleming has struggled at times. But as it turns out, it was not a demotion.

While conducting a conference call with reporters on Monday afternoon, head coach Joe Judge said Peart was forced to sit out due to an ailment unrelated to COVID-19.

“We had a plan for Matt in place. He had an ailment that popped up last minute,” Judge said. “It had nothing to do with his performance as of late. It had nothing to do with eliminating the rotation. He should be fine to go next week. We just wanted to make sure we kind of kept status quo with Cam (Fleming) and Andrew (Thomas) unless we absolutely needed him.”

Although Peart still needs to round his pass protection into shape, he’s been the Giants’ best run blocker this season, earning an 86.3 grade from Pro Football Focus.

Assuming all goes according to plan over the next several days, expect to see Peart back out there against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday.

Giants-Browns Week 15: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 15 game against the Cleveland Browns. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants entered Sunday night’s game with an opportunity to regain their lead in the NFC East and significantly boost their playoff changes. Instead, they took an ugly loss against the Cleveland Browns and fell to third in the division.

The loss guaranteed the Giants their fourth straight losing season and their eighth losing season over the last nine. It’s an ugly time.

Here’s a look at the snap counts that attributed to the Giants’ ninth loss of the season:

Offensive snaps: 54
Defensive snaps: 63
Special teams snaps: 18

Something that immediately leaps out when looking at the snap counts is that the offensive line rotation seems to have subsided. In fact, Matt Peart did not receive a single snap, while only Will Hernandez and Shane Lemieux were rotated.

Also worth noting is that Alfred Morris had the team’s most offensive success despite being on the field for just 13 snaps. Fullback Eli Penny also made an impact on his lowly eight snaps.

Meanwhile, linebacker Devante Downs made his presence felt — and not in a good way — despite being on the field for just 11 plays.

Quarterback Joe Webb took just four snaps on special teams. That fell well below expectations for his use.

Giants’ Daniel Jones, Blake Martinez questionable vs. Cardinals

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones and LB Blake Martinez are questionable against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14.

The New York Giants took the field for their final open practice of the week on Friday and once again, all eyes befell second-year quarterback Daniel Jones, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

For the second consecutive day, Jones took first-team reps during the portion of practice open to the media and looked good, but not quite 100%.

Head coach Joe Judge said he remains “fairly optimistic” Jones will play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

“I’m fairly optimistic,” Judge told reporters, “but at the same time, there’s a ways to go.”

Judge also expressed an optimism that linebacker Blake Martinez (back) could play in Week 14. But after limited participation on Thursday, Martinez was not seen during the media portion of practice on Friday.

Both Jones and Martinez were officially listed as questionable.

After two days of taking limited reps during practice, rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes did not practice on Friday due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, rookie offensive lineman Matt Peart was once again limited with an ankle injury.

Similar to Jones and Martinez, both Holmes and Peart are listed as questionable.

Defensive back Madre Harper, who did not practice this week with a knee injury, has been placed on injured reserve. He will miss at least three games.

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones ‘limited’ in practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (hamstring) returned to practice on Wednesday while LB Blake Martinez (back) was sidelined.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday in snowy conditions as they prepare for a Week 14 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Although the Giants only conducted a walkthrough that lasted less than 90 minutes, all eyes were on quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) and linebacker Blake Martinez (back).

The good news? Jones participated with his teammates and head coach Joe Judge told reporters he was “optimistic” the second-year quarterback would play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

“We’re going to give him an opportunity to go out there today and move around on the field,” Judge said. “We’re optimistic. I know he’s going to tell us everything we want to hear. We’ve got to use our eyes to set our ears with Daniel.

“We’re going to put him out there today and give him every chance go progress. Today is a walkthrough today so we’re not going to see anything full speed. Tomorrow we’ll be on the field moving around and Friday will be a big day for us to day for us to make a final decision.”

Things weren’t quite as positive for Martinez, who suffered a lower back injury late in a Week 13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Martinez was unable to return last Sunday and out on Wednesday, but Judge says he’s “hopeful” the defensive captain can play this coming Sunday.

“I have to be fair to Blake and see where he’s at. I hope so,” Judge said when asked if Blake can play on Sunday. “He was in meetings with us today, had a smile on his face and laughing, so you can always cut it with Blake. But obviously, guys are coming out of games, they’re banged up, they’re sore.

“Today being a walkthrough day is really part of the recovery from our trip going out west, so that should allow some guys with some nicks and bumps to do some things in practice, but when we get out there tomorrow it’ll kind of give us a better look in terms of guys that are dinged and bumped up in terms of how they can move around.”

Martinez rode the stationary bike during the portion of practice open to the media and despite his smile during meetings, was unable to join the team in their walkthrough.

The official (estimated) injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: DB Madre Harper (knee), LB Blake Martinez (back), OT Matt Peart (ankle)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (hamstring), DB Darnay Holmes (knee)

Full participant: N/A

What we learned from Giants’ 17-12 victory over Seahawks

The New York Giants defeated the Seattle Seahawks, 17-12, in Week 13 and here’s some of what we learned from that win.

The New York Giants advanced to 5-7 on the season and solidified their hold on the NFC East lead with a surprising 17-12 upset of the NFC West-leading Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday.

Here is what we learned in Week 13.

Giants’ Daniel Jones could play Sunday; Blake Martinez has sore back

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones will practice this week and could play on Sunday, while LB Blake Martinez is nursing a “tweaked back.”

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones missed a Week 13 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a hamstring injury, but came much closer to playing than many realize.

Ultimately, head coach Joe Judge felt the need to save Jones from himself, listing the 23-year-old as inactive on Sunday.

“I thought he looked better as the week went on,” Judge said after the game. “This guy wanted to go out there and play. Ultimately, I’ll tell you right now, I had to protect him from himself.

“He’s a competitor. He’s a tough dude. I have no doubt he would have gone out there and fought through any pain he had.”

The same scenario is unlikely to play out in Week 14, however. Judge says Jones is feeling better and will be given “every opportunity” in practice this week to prove that he’s capable of playing against the Arizona Cardinals.

“I think we’re going to give him every opportunity to go on the practice field this week and show that he can defend himself on the field properly,” Judge said on Monday. “If that’s the case, we obviously want him to play. We’re going to make sure we’re doing the right thing by him.”

The Giants also suffered an injury scare during Sunday’s game against Seattle.

Late in the fourth quarter, linebacker and team captain, Blake Martinez, left the game after injuring his back. Following the contest, Judge had little update, but noted during Monday’s conference call that the injury appeared minor.

Barring any setbacks, Martinez is expected to suit up against the Cards.

Finally, rookie offensive lineman Matt Peart also suffered a minor ankle injury but managed to play through it in Week 13. He, too, is expected to play against Arizona.
