Texans TE room embodies ‘next man up’ mindset

The Houston Texans tight ends have done a decent job of showing how to absorb the attrition of training camp and preseason.

HOUSTON — With the hiring of DeMeco Ryans as head coach, the Houston Texans have taken on plenty of mantras such as “S.W.A.R.M.” and “Iron Sharpens Iron.” Another one that they may need to put on a t-shirt is “Next Man Up,” especially with the number of injuries they have sustained during training camp.

The offensive side of the ball has been hit the hardest with starting offensive lineman Scott Quessenberry (ACL, MCL) out for the season and Tytus Howard (hand) out for 4-6 weeks. The tight ends group had to manage without reserve tight ends Brevin Jordan and Teagen Quitoriano for most of the camp but received good news before the start of practice on Saturday when Quitoriano was activated from the physically-unable-to-perform list.

With Dalton Schultz having to miss some practices after taking a vicious blow from safety Jimmie Ward during team drills, tight ends coach Jake Moreland has had to rely on some of the guys looking for an opportunity to get more reps once the regular season starts.

“The room has that next man up mentality,” said tight ends coach Jake Moreland. “Everybody is ready at any given second, so if somebody goes down, obviously it is unfortunate, but when we keep playing, the next guy is ready to step in and do what he can to continue to help the team in that rep.”

One player who has been making the most of his opportunity is Mason Schreck. He has stood out for his reliability when running routes and has shown to be a good blocker which is very important in new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s offense.

The former Cincinnati Bengals player was a reliable target for rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud in Schultz’s absence during camp and had two receptions for 17 yards in the Texans’ first preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

Houston will be looking for significant production from Dalton Shultz, whom they signed in the offseason after spending his first five years in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. Moreland believes that if they can get the production, he had his last three seasons where he amassed 199 receptions and 2,000 yards.

“He has been very productive since he has been in the league,” Moreland said about Schultz at the conclusion of practice. “He is a really good voice in the room.”

Texans CB Desmond King providing tips for rookie QB C.J. Stroud

Houston Texans cornerback Desmond King gives rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud pointers and advice after their team portions of training camp.

HOUSTON — The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes consistency as an agreement or harmony of parts and features to one another or a whole.

First-year Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans must have that word etched into memory when evaluating players on the field looking to make the roster and contribute this season.

One player showing signs of putting together consistent training camp practices is rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who took all of the first-team reps for the second consecutive day as he continues his bid to become the Opening Day starter against the Baltimore Ravens.

In front of the fans in attendance for the first evening practice at Houston Methodist Training Center, Stroud displayed why he is starting to separate himself from the competition with third-year quarterback Davis Mills.

During red-zone 7-on-7 drills, the former Ohio State standout threw a picturesque lob pass to running back Dameon Pierce, who was locked up against cornerback Desmond King. Stroud placed the ball where the only options were Pierce dropping the pass, or it went out of the side of the end zone.

After making a spectacular catch, the second-year running back went to one knee and played the air guitar as the fans cheered him on from the stands.

Stroud struck gold in the end zone again later in the drill when he found tight end Mason Schreck in the back of the end zone for another score.

As practice continued, he began to show that he is a quick learner and rarely commits the same mistake twice. Unlike previous practices where the Texans defenders could bait him into an error or a turnover, Stroud took what was given to him as he consistently moved the ball down the field during 11-on-11 drills.

“I talk to him here and there and let him know that it is ok to check the ball down to your safety (receiver or back),” said Desmond King when asked about the progression of Stroud. “I know you want to make that one (spectacular) pass, but sometimes you have to make the right pass instead of the pass you want.”

Texans release TE Darrell Daniels, sign TE Mason Schreck

The Houston Texans have released tight end Darrell Daniels and signed tight end Mason Schreck.

The Houston Texans have swapped out tight ends on their roster.

The Texans released Darrell Daniels on Friday. The team then filled Daniels’ spot with Mason Schreck.

Daniels played with the Arizona Cardinals from 2018-21 and caught 10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. The former undrafted free agent from Washington played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, catching three passes for 26 yards. For nine games in 2018 before going to the Cardinals, Daniels played two games for the Seattle Seahawks.

Schreck is a former Cincinnati Bengals 2018 seventh-round pick and played 23 career games with one start. The former Buffalo product was predominantly a special teamer as he played 277 such snaps compared to 55 on offense in his four seasons with the Bengals.

Bengals make roster moves ahead of Week 13 vs. Jets

The Bengals promoted a player and waived another before the game.

The Cincinnati Bengals need some help at tight end with both Cethan Carter and rookie Drew Sample ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

That in mind, the team announced the promotion of Mason Schreck off the practice squad and elected to waive offensive tackle Andre Smith in the process.

It’s a not-so-noteworthy move. Schreck had a big role on special teams before getting hurt last year, had fans within the building and even had teams calling about trading for him in the past.

And on the offensive line front, Smith started a handful of games at left tackle before getting hurt. Letting him go has more to do with Cordy Glenn than Jonah Williams, but it’s notable nonetheless.

We’ll see if Schreck has an impact Sunday — but the team sure needs somebody to step up.
