Texans have 4 former Broncos set to face their old team

Several former Broncos will face off against their former team on Sunday, including fullback Andrew Beck and running back Mike Boone.

When the Denver Broncos go on the road to face the Houston Texans this week, they will see some familiar faces.

Texans fullback Andrew Beck, who played for the Broncos from 2019-2022, has one rushing touchdown and one kickoff return for a touchdown this season.

Houston running back Mike Boone, who played in Denver from 2021-2022, has five carries and seven receptions this season. Boone has also returned four kickoffs.

Texans tight end Eric Saubert, who played for the Broncos from 2021-2022, is yet to catch a pass this season. Houston backup quarterback Case Keenum, who played in Denver in 2018, has only appeared in two games, completing two passes.

The Texans also have a former member of the Broncos’ coaching staff in tight ends coach Jake Moreland, who held that role in Denver last year.

Earlier this year, Houston also rostered former Broncos cornerback Darius Phillips and ex-Denver tight end Eric Tomlinson during training camp, but Phillips and Tomlinson failed to make the Texans’ 53-man roster this summer.

Beck, who has 236 snaps on offense and 128 snaps on special teams this year, will likely have the biggest role among ex-Broncos players this weekend.

Texans TE room embodies ‘next man up’ mindset

The Houston Texans tight ends have done a decent job of showing how to absorb the attrition of training camp and preseason.

HOUSTON — With the hiring of DeMeco Ryans as head coach, the Houston Texans have taken on plenty of mantras such as “S.W.A.R.M.” and “Iron Sharpens Iron.” Another one that they may need to put on a t-shirt is “Next Man Up,” especially with the number of injuries they have sustained during training camp.

The offensive side of the ball has been hit the hardest with starting offensive lineman Scott Quessenberry (ACL, MCL) out for the season and Tytus Howard (hand) out for 4-6 weeks. The tight ends group had to manage without reserve tight ends Brevin Jordan and Teagen Quitoriano for most of the camp but received good news before the start of practice on Saturday when Quitoriano was activated from the physically-unable-to-perform list.

With Dalton Schultz having to miss some practices after taking a vicious blow from safety Jimmie Ward during team drills, tight ends coach Jake Moreland has had to rely on some of the guys looking for an opportunity to get more reps once the regular season starts.

“The room has that next man up mentality,” said tight ends coach Jake Moreland. “Everybody is ready at any given second, so if somebody goes down, obviously it is unfortunate, but when we keep playing, the next guy is ready to step in and do what he can to continue to help the team in that rep.”

One player who has been making the most of his opportunity is Mason Schreck. He has stood out for his reliability when running routes and has shown to be a good blocker which is very important in new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s offense.

The former Cincinnati Bengals player was a reliable target for rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud in Schultz’s absence during camp and had two receptions for 17 yards in the Texans’ first preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

Houston will be looking for significant production from Dalton Shultz, whom they signed in the offseason after spending his first five years in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. Moreland believes that if they can get the production, he had his last three seasons where he amassed 199 receptions and 2,000 yards.

“He has been very productive since he has been in the league,” Moreland said about Schultz at the conclusion of practice. “He is a really good voice in the room.”

Broncos coaching staff update: Rex Ryan buzz heating up

Rex Ryan seems to be a favorite for DC. Meanwhile, Mike Westhoff is in as the new assistant head coach. More staff updates here.

Sean Payton has a new assistant head coach with the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos have hired Mike Westhoff as an assistant head coach, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Legwold. He will oversee the club’s special teams units alongside new special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica.

Westhoff and Kotwica previously worked together under Rex Ryan with the New York Jets from 2009-2012. Ryan is also a candidate to land in Denver. In fact, Ryan was spotted at the Hilton Denver Inverness hotel — about 10 minutes from the Broncos’ facility — on Saturday morning.

Ryan has already interviewed for Denver’s defensive coordinator opening, and he was in town for a second interview over the weekend, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Ryan is considered the favorite for the DC position, but he is not the only candidate.

The Broncos also interviewed Vance Joseph and Kris Richard last week, and Christian Parker, Mike Zimmer and Nick Rallis have also been linked to Denver’s opening in recent weeks. Rallis is no longer a candidate after taking the DC position with the Arizona Cardinals. It remains to be seen if any other candidates will be interviewed.

Elsewhere on the coaching front, Broncos tight ends coach Jake Moreland has left to join the Houston Texans in a lateral move. Denver is expected to hire Declan Doyle to replace Moreland.

The Broncos are also losing “instructional designer” John Viera, who is following Nathaniel Hackett to the New York Jets, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. He was a “coach for the coaches” in Denver last year.

Klis also reported that regardless of who the Broncos hire as defensive coordinator, they hope to keep defensive line coach Marcus Dixon and secondary coach Christian Parker on staff in some capacity.

Broncos have officially hired 10 assistant coaches so far

More hires are on the way.

After hiring Justin Outten (offensive coordinator), Butch Barry (offensive line coach) and Klint Kubiak (passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach) earlier this month, Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett made seven more hires official on Monday.

Denver announced the official additions of Dom Capers (senior defensive assistant), Ramon Chinyoung (offensive quality control), Peter Hansen (linebackers), Mike Mallory (assistant special teams), Jake Moreland (tight ends), Ben Steele (assistant offensive line) and Bert Watts (outside linebackers), bringing the total to 10 new coaches so far.

More hires are on the way.

Most notably, Los Angeles Rams secondary coach/pass game coordinator Ejiro Evero is expected to become the team’s new defensive coordinator. The Rams just won the Super Bowl on Sunday, so that move not becoming official on Monday is not surprising.

The Broncos are also expected to hire Rams assistant special teams coach Dwayne Stukes as their new offensive coordinator. Other additions that are not yet official include Tyrone Wheatley (running backs coach) and Marcus Dixon (defensive line coach).

4 things to know about new Jets assistant OL coach Jake Moreland

Jets Wire takes a look at what Jake Moreland brings to Robert Saleh’s staff as the Jets’ assistant offensive line coach.

Jake Moreland is joining Robert Saleh’s staff as the Jets’ assistant offensive line coach and will work side-by-side with John Benton.

Moreland spent the previous four seasons working at his alma mater, Western Michigan, where he was the team’s co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. Moreland and Saleh don’t have experience working with one another, but they do have Michigan ties, as Saleh was born and raised in The Great Lakes State and played his college football at Northern Michigan.

With Moreland joining Saleh’s staff, let’s get to know him a bit better.
