Report: Myles Garrett claimed Mason Rudolph used racial slur before fight

Myles Garrett dropped some serious accusations on Mason Rudolph, according to reports.

Based on everything we know about Myles Garrett, it’s not a reach to say that he acted out of character during the brawl between the Browns and Steelers last Thursday night. Garrett has presented himself as a jovial dude who is into poetry and dinosaurs, so it was truly shocking to see him tear the helmet off of Mason Rudolph and use it as a weapon.

Garrett did not offer much of an explanation following the game, so we had no other choice but to assume that he simply lost control for a moment. But now Garrett is offering up an explanation for why he lost his cool. The Browns star is claiming Rudolph used a racial slur toward him before the brawl took place, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Josina Anderson.

Rudolph’s lawyer didn’t waste any time denying that claim, almost immediately releasing a statement on behalf of the Steelers quarterback…

The matter is now in the league’s hands. Unless the NFL can find audio substantiating Garrett’s claim or there are witnesses who are willing to come forward, this will be Garrett’s word against Rudolph’s.

It’s unclear when Garrett is alleging Rudolph used the slur, but Schefter’s tweet indicates that it happened before the physical altercation, which resulted in the suspension of Garrett, teammate Larry Ogunjobi and Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey.

Garrett has been suspended for the remainder of the season and the NFL left open the possibility of the suspension going into the 2020 season. Ogunjobi and Pouncey are appealing their suspensions. Rudolph, meanwhile, avoided a major punishment. That will obviously change if Garrett can provide proof that a racial slur was used. It’s unclear how that will affect his own suspensions, if at all, but it could help in the court of public opinion.

Baker Mayfield, Sheldon Richardson unaware of Myles Garrett’s racial slur accusation against Mason Rudolph

Baker Mayfield, Sheldon Richardson and other Browns were unaware of Myles Garrett’s accusation against Mason Rudolph that the Steelers QB used a racial slur

The allegation made by Browns defensive end Myles Garrett that Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph used a racial slur at the onset of Thursday night’s brawl at FirstEnergy Stadium is rippling across the NFL landscape. The waves hit in the Browns locker room, too.

Two Browns players were directly asked by ESPN’s local beat writer, Jake Trotter, if they heard Rudolph say anything or if they had heard any talk about a possible racial slur prior to today. Neither Baker Mayfield nor Sheldon Richardson backed up Garrett’s claim, which the suspended DE made during his appeal hearing on Wednesday.

Trotter posted a very similar reaction from defensive lineman Richardson, who was on the field during the brawl,

As of now, there is no on-field audio from the brawl to confirm or refute Garrett’s allegation.

Updates:

One Browns player, left guard and team captain Joel Bitonio, does believe Garrett:

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. also affirmed his trust in Garrett’s words,

And the plot thickens.

It wasn’t long after the report came out that Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett claimed Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph had used a racial slur before their fight when he met with the NFL at his appeal hearing that questions arose about the validity of the claim.

According to NFL reporter Jake Trotter, at least two of Garrett’s teammates, Sheldon Richardson and Baker Mayfield had never heard this before from Garrett or anyone else on the team. Mayfield said he was “stunned” by the report.

This whole situation could get very ugly for Garrett and really blow up in his face. It will be interesting to see how the NFL views these latest allegations.

Mason Rudolph’s attorney calls Myles Garrett allegation of a racial slur ‘a lie’

Mason Rudolph’s attorney calls Myles Garrett’s allegation of the Steelers QB using a racial slur ‘a lie’

[jwplayer CxQ38ffE-ThvAeFxT]

Myles Garrett held an appeal meeting to his indefinite suspension on Wednesday. In his appeal hearing with James Thrash of the NFL offices, Garrett alleges Mason Rudolph called him a racial slur prior to Week 11’s melee.

Rudolph’s attorney wasted no time in responding. In a quickly prepared statement instantly distributed on social media, attorney Timothy M. Younger strongly refutes Garrett’s claim. In fact, he calls it “a lie”.

Here is Younger’s statement:

Rudolph met with the media on Wednesday and read from a prepared statement that did little to calm the storm.

Report: Myles Garrett says Mason Rudolph used racial slur at outset of brawl

An ESPN report indicates Myles Garrett says Mason Rudolph used a racial slur to set off the brawl on Thursday Night Football

A new report from ESPN indicates that during his suspension hearing on Wednesday, Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett told NFL representatives that Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph directed a racial slur at him just before the melee at the end of last Thursday night’s game.

There have been rumors of this being a possible escalating factor, but this is the first time a reputable source has reported that Garrett made the accusation. Garrett has said nothing on the racial slur matter publicly.

From the ESPN notes of the appeal hearing:

Garrett made the allegation as part of his initial comments during the appeal hearing in New York, sources said. It created an argumentative exchange between both sides about whether the allegation was permissible.

When the allegation was made, appeals officer James Thrash remained stoic and took copious notes, sources said. He did ask Garrett a question about how he might act differently in the future, and Garrett conveyed he would not let events escalate like that again in the future.

Rudolph has vehemently denied using any racially charged language. He issued a statement via his attorney, as relayed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Garrett was suspended indefinitely, meaning he will miss the rest of the season, including any playoff games; teammate Larry Ogunjobi was handed a one-game ban. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey was suspended for three games, and each team was fined $250,000.

Report: Myles Garrett claims Mason Rudolph used racial slur before fight

Myles Garrett has levied a pretty serious claim about Mason Rudolph.

According to a report from ESPN, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has claimed that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph directed a racial slur at him before their fight last Thursday night. Garrett made the accusation while meeting with the league this week as part of the appeal of his indefinite suspension for attacking Rudolph on the field.

It didn’t take long for Rudolph, via his attorney, to fire back at the allegation.

Garrett has spoken about the incident more than once since the game but this is the first time the notion of a racial slur being the impetus for Garrett’s actions has been brought up. Obviously, Rudolph denies that, and at this point, it all comes down to whom the NFL and the court of public opinion believe.

Browns fans show their hypocrisy over brawl with T-shirt

The Browns fans and many members of the media just don’t get it.

The fight at the end of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns game last week has become one of the most polarizing incidents in recent NFL memory. Most non-Steeler fans and especially Browns fans have turned this whole thing into a blame-fest aiming their vitriol at Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph. The shirt by a Cleveland artist illustrates that point perfectly.

But that mentality is the height of hypocrisy. All you have to do is flip the scenario to show how foolish they sound. Had the score been 21-7 Steelers and on the final play defensive tackle Cam Heyward plants Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield like Myles Garrett did Rudolph,

Is there any Browns fan who would vilify Mayfield if he responded the way Rudolph did? Of course there not. If Heyward had hit Mayfield over the head with his own helmet, I’d fully support the idea of the league suspending him for the season. And I certainly wouldn’t try to lay blame at the quarterback who was just trying to defend himself.

Fans and pundits who are taking this blame Rudolph approach really need to think about how foolish they look when you consider this could be your quarterback.
